Big predator fish like pike and musky stir angling excitement like few other fish, and although not a core focus here at Wired2fish, several staffers grew up chasing them and love a good hunt. This long-form video with Kyle Peterson overviews his musky fishing season with a focused discussion on using forward-imaging sonar (he's a Garmin LiveScope guru), his go-to lures, rod setups, and terminal tackle considerations. It all combines to help you catch these low-density and nomadic predator fish with a high success rate. *Boat and electronics links at the bottom.

Electronics continue to re-write the fishing game, and perhaps no technology is transforming how we fish faster than forward-imaging (aka live sonar). Kyle details how to employ forward-imaging to target fish in "outer space" (suspended away from structure) -- the discussion covers the importance of casting distance and accuracy, bait angle of approach relative to the fish, and lure manipulation to trigger reaction strikes.

Muskies are a lot like bass in that they readily and respond and eat a myriad of offerings from crankbaits, soft plastics, spinners (inline & safety pin), jerkbaits, and live bait, to name a few. For Peterson, live sonar has been transformative in helping him refine his bait selection to 3 core categories: 1) inline spinners (bucktails), 2) topwaters, and 3) performance swimbaits. He explains how and when he uses each, emphasizing the new Savage Gear Sucker, which can be worked at various depths and speeds, including being burned (most blow out) -- excellent attributes for the live imaging game.
Catching muskies is hard. Period! They are low-density fish that infrequently eat yet are highly curious and can go nuts when you get things right. Modern sonar technologies allow you to break down a fishery in a day, which used to take years -- this is great for catching fish but always requires a thoughtful mindset on conservation. Always handle these top predators with care and a speedy release.

A fantastic job well done on catching this beauty of a monster fish right here, wow is it ever. I know for a fact this one gave you a fight while you were reeling it in. I wish we had big fish like this in my area, unfortunately we don't. We just have a stream and filled with trout and pretty much that's it, well we do have a canal with other fish but nothing like this. In the canal we have a bunch of Sunnies, bluegill's, trout, rock bass, smallmouth largemouth bass, perch and crappies, pickerel, suckers, carp and a lot of turtles. This is the choice we have to fish for an organelles but I don't do that, I just stick with the trout and that's it.

Have you ever used perspective mode while fishing for Muskie? Especially in shallow water.

Your video of forward imaging and the fish hitting the lure is exactly what Im looking for. Im looking to purchase a Ultrex Quest with Mega Live. I will have a 9" Helix on the bow, and a 7" at the console. With the transducer on the trolling motor, dont you get a bunch of zig zag of the imaging as your TM navigates along the shore line? Or mounting the transducer on the boat a better option, to get a fixed image? Im really not interested in mounting to the side bar/bracket that you can attach to the side of the boat, looking for something more permanent, that is not effected by the TM. Thanks for any info!

Hi Gavin, will touch base with Savage and let you know when we hear back. 2022 is the short answer but we're not sure on month or retail partners.

I've always wondered...why is stuff like live scope and ect.. why is that legal for fishing but using a drone to spot deer and then go finding them is illegal almost always even using radios when deer hunting is usually illegal.. but yet you can use cameras underwater to find fish and make it easier with no legal problems..

All the above, plus knowing where a fish is located is a fat cry from being guaranteed to catch it. If you can see a deer you can shoot it.
@N2theBlue1

cause you still have to make a fish bite whereas you just shoot the deer. Think of livescope etc as more like a spotting scope or binoculars.

What’s a difference for targeting a musky vs a northern pike? Just the average sizes, because muskies tend to grow bigger?

40”-45” is an average musky so yes quite a step up!

Your videos are awesome but your tips on-line are absolutely garbage.. they are adversed as "best baits for fall" or something along those lines and then you guys list 20 baits that literally cover every type of fishing lol

Lol using 80lb line and a 50lb leader may be the dumbest thing I've heard of in a while. Way under powered
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish Жыл бұрын
We disagree. The size of the lure largely dictates line and leader size. 80-pound line holds up to any musky application save for backlashing with the heaviest rubber baits, and 50-pound titanium is sufficient for many lures while having outstanding handling characteristics.

That's an excellent point. I run alot of 50 and 65 lb braid for muskie also, as the big lines can impede depth and action of many lures. Quick question: I noted it appeared you took the rear hook/magnet out of lure prior to casting. I purchased a couple of them for last fall and the rear hook constantly came out on casts or weed contact. Have they beefed up the magnet or modified the attachment this year? I will add something if not. I'm liking the action and attention of/on them.
