On this video I'm with my step Dad Garret and we are running "cans" for catfish. This is an old method used by locals where I'm from. Although this method can be done using just about anything, the term comes from the tactics origins, using metal paint cans. I hope y'all enjoy!

I'm 52 years old from East Alabama and was raised catfishing my whole life with my dad on the Chattahoochee River and surrounding lakes & Occasionally the Tallapoosa river & we always used trot lines. And my dad always had a commercial license and I have never even seen or heard of this. This is a cool and innovative way to fish.

The best part of this method is that you don't have to go out to check your buckets if you don't want to, and it don't matter either way 'cause they can get away if they want to.

definitely a passive food gathering skill . i will remember it . but i live by rivers so it's different than a lake . still may work in some areas , i'll have to try it and see . edit: plus , the materials will be available loooong afte they stop making anything plastic . and a canoe or kayak would work just as well .

Those fish are ideal size for eating. I used to go down and fish on the backwater of the Pearl River in southern Mississippi. We would fill two coolers with fish ready to cook in two days. We would bring it home in Illinois and have a giant fish fry in a small town. We would have the yard full of neighbors for Catfish dinner. They brought the fixings to go along with the fish.

My father and his buddies way back in the 1930's , 40's and 50's used 55 gallon drums. They knocked holes in them with railroad spikes and put them in the streams flowing out of the near by lakes. In the morning they stand the drums up and let the water run out the holes. Dad said that they would get 200 to three hundred catfish in one barrel.

I've never seen this before, but I will try it. My dad told me when he was young, he would catch catfish by what he called hogging. Wading the edge of the banks, feeling up under in holes, and catching huge catfish up to 4 feet long. Not me. I guess I'm a little chicken. That was in around Muskogee, Oklahoma. I live in South Carolina now, and I will try the buckets. I enjoyed the video.

Thank you for making and posting this video. I'm 54 an never seen fishing like this. I've fished my whole life, thinking we need bait to catch fish but now I learned we don't. You provide a place for the catfish to lay eggs and then you take the fish from the cans an let eggs hatch out an making more fish to replace the ones you take. This is in my opinion the absolute Best way to fish. Like dad said, if for any reason he is not able to run his lines the fish inside can leave after depositing the eggs and the babies hatch out an swim away ready for next two fish to get inside the cans. You provide a safe place for them to lay their eggs to keep other fish away from eating the babies also. It is a win win in cat fishing and I truly thank you for showing us all a better way of doing it. We don't hurt nor kill fish if we are not able to check our lines, that's awesome. Best video I seen this year. I am sharing this with all my friends and family. Even to ones who don't fish. Because I know they know people who do and this is by far the absolute best way of doing it. Thank you again and God bless you and us all.

I’m from Ohio, 65 years old, and never even heard of this. I have heard that if you want cats in a pond you drop in 55 gallon drums for them to spawn. So, yeah, I see it. AWESOME video and learning experience. Thank you.

Hey y'all, Greetings to you and your kin. I'm in Kansas and have never seen this before. Trot lines, old Zebco reels and cane pole have been the standard. I will definitely try this since most of our lakes are becoming mud flats and the turtles take over the river trot lines if they're not monitored daily. Times are getting hard and this is a great thing to use for stocking the pantry. Oh yeah, turtles are fair game too. Thanks for the great time on the lake with y'all! 🇺🇸⚔🇬🇪

@@nick9227 Hello Nick! May I ask why u only eat 8” catfish, is there a difference n taste to other sizes, or is there a different reason? Thank u and have a wonderful day!

@@joybickerstaff194 in my opinion ...yes. They are better. It's like eating a crispy catfish like you would eat an ear of corn. Finger food. Once you eat a few you learn how to eat it down to a skeleton without getting a bone in your mouth. They are very popular in fla especially around Lake Okeechobee. Been eating them for 55 years

New subscriber here; never seen Can Fishing before, but my Dad and his brothers used old tires, sewn together at the bead, with a hole for entry... Same concept, but this is easier on an old fisherman! I moved away from Louisiana about 30 years ago, and I was glad to hear your accent...! God bless ALL of us! WWG1WGA

Amazing, but I guess it only works when they are spawning. I've never fished much, but this looks like a ton of fun! I wonder if there are other ways to preserve catfish that would taste good. I wonder if they can be smoked or salted or both. I think I'll look into it. (Edited findings) I looked into it, and there are tons of ways to preserve the catch at home. Search smoking (NOT cold smoking) catfish. It looked really good! There must be precautions against parasites, because it seems like most catfish have them from what I found. After what I've seen I really don't believe I'll be trying catfish sashimi anytime soon. 🤢
