Catching a SpaceX Starship from Belly Flop ; No Landing Burn!

Here is a crazy idea I had after Elon Musk tweeted, "Ideal scenario imo is catching Starship in horizontal "glide" with no landing burn, although that is quite a challenge for the tower..."
What I came up with is huge! This is just a nutty idea of mine and would probably never happen.
But who knows?

Woah, this is really interesting, and something that I never even thought was remotely conceivable, but it looks to be at least worth considering the physics! The main problem I see rn, is how to make the catch net so that it's elastic enough not to damage the ship on impact, yet isn't going to make the ship bounce away, while being able to transfer the force of the impact to the main structure immediately for decceleration.
@norihiro01

@norihiro01
@norihiro01 3 жыл бұрын
@@NickHenning3D so, to continue the "how to catch an egg without breaking it" problem - what you need to have, is for the catch arm/net to already be moving at the same velocity and direction as the ship when it comes into contact with it, so that there is only minimal to zero impact force. Then immediately start the decceleration after contact. Obviously that's an insane feat of speed, power and precision, and In order to do such an insane feat, you would need an electric motor that can move and control the arm with milisecond precision, and be capable of accelerating and deccelerating it along with the mass of the ship. That's an insane size motor, but guess what company could be capable of making such a motor??

Chop the top off SS, and graft a Dragon right there. Do *NOT* separate like a regular third stage. Instead, separate just before "Flip and burn". 1) Escape at all times capability. 2) Crew rating far easier. Sure, it's only 7, not 100. But a very direct and conceptually simple way of skipping past some hurdles in ways that don't require multiple flights to have a crewman in orbit.

Cool animation and idea, but I really hope nothing like this gets used in reality.. I personally would love to see them land independent of any structure or assistance. I feel it's a step backwards as well.. I mean hell, why not just have a parachute? I dont think that is feasible. Because the whole starship is built on stacking of rings. The way this Trebuchet catches Starship it will expose all its rings and might increase the chances of abrupt disintegration and lead into catastrophic unscheduled disassembly (CUD). I personally don't feel the physics and the material composition will allow this. Looks good in animation but unrealistic when it comes to real life.
