Ouch! This was several years ago when I was still very green on a board. The conditions at Snowshoe Mountain were awful - about 50F and raining - and the slush was unforgiving. I was just good enough at staying upright that I tried to push my limits, and this happened. Last run of the day of course!

This is exactly why you need to use your edges and carve. These were all skidded turns, which keeps your speed constant instead of slowing down. The fastest point from A to B is a straight line, this is why you see snowboarders and Skiers make a bunch of S-turns. Hope this helps the newbies!

First time I ever went snowboarding, my cousins took me on a blue slope after just barely learning how to stay on the board for more than 15 seconds on the bunny slope. (I could skateboard which definitely helped). I was going down it decently at first until we came upon a very steep slope, which I couldn't go down because I wasn't good enough at slowing myself down yet. My cousins, eager to shred, seemed annoyed at how long I was taking to get down this slope. Well, I decided after getting half way down this hill that I am just going to bomb it all the way to the end of the run. It was invigorating, blazing past all of the other skiers and snowboarders like a boss. I made it all the way to the point where I could see the end, but right when I thought I had made it, I caught an edge and slammed my knees directly onto hard ice. Done. Finished. As I lied on my back in agony, I could see everyone in the lifts looking down at me as I was right underneath them. Haven't gone back since.

I did this exact same thing when I was 14, but instead caught my front edge. I was going a little faster than what is shown the video. the accident happened so fast I didn't have time to react and put my hands down. My face/chin smashed directly into the hard snow and I knocked myself out for about 5 mins. I had people coming up to me asking me if I was ok. I had no idea what was going on. The next thing I remember was going down the mountain with the medical crew. I had a bloody chin and was pretty dazed after that. Ever since I do not ride that fast anymore.

Like everyone is saying, use the edges to avoid this. To help me I like to think to never go in a straight line but rather a very long drawn out wide turn. If you’re ever going straight on a snowboard you’re 1000% gonna catch an edge at some point and eat it. Like the earths horizon is one big curve that looks straight, that’s how your “straight” runs should be. Not actually straight, just an incredibly long and large drawn out turn where you don’t turn too much at all (using your edge to ride)

No it truly is a good tip it’s just that my family is just an entire family of snowboarders and my mom and dad gave birth to a strictly park rider (oldest sister) an Alberta winter games two time gold medalist (the younger of my two older sisters) and I’m in my areas snowboard race club so I rode in straight lines because I’m taught that lol😂. But you should start off doing big S turns. It’s the only way to get good while starting off. And also NO MATTER HOW COOL YOU THINK YOU ARE, just take some damn lessons. Don’t try to teach yourself.

Skidded turns should be used to slow down riding edges is like going with the flow. If you can ride those edges all day not only can you go fast but it feels right. And just to clarify, there's no such thing as carving turns are better than sliding/skidding turn. They are both techniques you can do and are appropriate for different terrains and the kind of riding style you want. For you to improve your sliding/skidding turns, you do also need to engage more edges to achieve better control and performance. They are still sliding/skidding turns, but better. Practicing your cravings turns will help with improving your sliding turns, as it lets you practice the use of edges. Being able to do advance small radius sliding turns will also help you carve better.

This happened to me a few times just yesterday. Second time snowboarding. Still trying to get my transition from toe edge to heel edge to be consistent and smooth. Had too much speed and tried to go to heel from toe too quickly. Busted my ass hard. I've got 3 runs today left in me now bc my left cheek is too damn sore

What really helped me transitioning from toe to heel edge was 1) leaning forward onto your downhill foot (it’s scary, but do not lean backwards or you’ll eat sh*t) 2) to help me lean forward, try to lead with my downhill shoulder 3) squat strong, firmly but progressively as you start feeling your heel edge engaging

We had just finished our cabin and I was up snowboarding for my 3rd ever time and I was only on green slopes learning and to get to my cabin you had to take a black run and a black trail I slid down the run with my ass and the trail I decided to take even though it was closed due to ice I sped up extremely fast and caught the edge slamming my whole body force onto my right knee had I chipped a piece off my kneecap and had to walk back another mile it was the most painful thing ever I only got my feeling/nerves back a year later and still sometimes hurts after that i got into skiing and never had a problem and within the first year I hit a double black and went down pretty easily 😂

One time, I, an amateur snowboarder, wanted to spray my friends with snow. So I was going pretty fast as I was about to slow down and spray them. I wanted to go a little bit closer, but my legs didn't like that so they turned. Unfortunately, this was all they did. This lead to me faceplanting at a very high speed, so hard that after my face hit the snow, my legs came up and around me, and I was just sitting there confused. I don't think it hurt at all, which is the weirdest part.

There's a chance he has improper goggles and/or impaired vision. Lack of control presented in this video often occurs when rider can't see properly and hasn't acquired skill to ride without full vision. Great learning video anyway as to what you shouldn't do. Those are errors which you do once or twice in life, so it's good that it happened to him on soft snow.

@@mjtch if you know how to ride correctly (which the rider in the video does not) catching an edge like this almost never happens. Furthermore, if you don’t have the fundamentals of snowboarding down, going to the terrain park will be equally as disastrous, if not even more dangerous then riding on a normal trail. If you can’t link a turn and do a proper carve, you 1.) have no business riding at that speed, 2.) have no business being in the terrain park.
