As a teacher, this is something you will have to eventually deal with. Cheating! Yes, students are supposed to be there to learn but some are wanting to take the shortest easiest path to passing. I'm here to stop that!
By no means do I want to fail anyone for making a one time mistake. That's why I try to take a proactive approach to cheating...convince would be cheaters to not cheat before they even get the idea of doing it. Typically, once I showed them a few of the ways I could catch them within Mastercam, not many would attempt slipping one past me. This video is a tool for teachers to track down would be cheaters and a warning to would be cheats that every teacher out there is now going to know these tricks :)
I always found the best way to catch someone cheating was with a simple conversation about the project. A few questions about how this or that was done, why something was done a particular way vs another, that typically gets em every time. But it isn't physical proof. This video will show several ways to get proof and a few ways to deter students as well.
Students, just do the project. Your future self will thank you for the effort.

Great video, Mike. Since you talked about config at the end I thought of an idea for a new video. How about showing how to change all the defaults and then saving the config to a USB so the student can use any computer. Another thing I've shown my students how to do is export tool paths so they can import into a new file and not need to reinvent the wheel every time.

Kevin I also teach my students how to create a tool library, export ops, configure file of MC how to do basic post changes and have it all saved all to a USB. It works pretty well since the students are never on the same computer during class.

Having a library of saved toolpaths is a huge time saver. I have a bunch saved up with the the tool, wear, lead/out, cut parameters all set. Import and select new geometry and tweek if needed.

The last one about the NC name is easy to change but being a student they may not know how.

Its not a difficult one to get around but another speed bump to put in their way. Anything that makes cheating more work ends up making doing the work the easier option.

Before I started school for Precision Machining I thought I'd get ahead and pirate a copy of MC2019. My school was still using 2017 at the time. Well when I wanted to try 2022 some years later I couldn't download the demo. After a week of errors I called tech support and turns out there's a .sys file that gets embedded in your directory so even if you format your computer it's still there preventing you from installing. I mean the difference is being able to post or not had I known that I would have just downloaded the 2019 demo haha

I thought I had a video up coving how to select non standard editors in Mastercam, but I guess I don't. Put that one on the list! Basically, in your Config on the Start/Exit page, under the Editor pulldown select OTHER. When you do you'll be taken to the windows browse menu. Now just point to the exe of the program you want to select. For Notepad++ this is typically located in the C:\Program Files\Notepad++ folder, select notepad++.exe there and then click Open.

is there a way for my professor to find out i’ve cheated, if i transfer my friend’s file to my computer and change a couple of dimensions?
@CamInstructor
@CamInstructor 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You'll have the same time stamps in your files. Why do you want to cheat though? What good does it do you? If you signed up for the class, do you not want to learn the content?

Is it possible to see how much time has been spent on a project?
@CamInstructor
@CamInstructor 2 жыл бұрын
You could use the info in that long data sheet shown in the video but there would be too many variables for it to be reliable. Are you trying to run a timed test? Or just curious of the amount of time spent on a file?
