Some times it's about quality over quantity. These crayfish were huge, 2 of which were over the legal maximum size limit and had to be returned to the water.

You seem to have a variety of sub species of cray fish there, and these ones look to grow very large. I see you taking the smaller ones you call Yabbies to cook up but never seen you take these bigger ones. Do they all have basically the same flavour ? In British Columbia Canada we are very limited and find them in the south of the province, but only a couple types. in the Northern part of the province where I live now, there is pretty much none. Thanks for another interesting video share
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thanks for tuning in. These are Murray Crayfish. They are subject to a tight bag limit of 2 and strict size limits. These are caught in winter and only have a 3 month open season. Yabbies are much more plentiful and prefer warmer water, although I did catch a few last night. They have no season or size limit. Crayfish need fresh flowing water with a decent level of oxygen, whereas yabbies prefer warm, still stagnant water. These are Murray crayfish and are the second ind largest freshwater crayfish in the world, se one only to the giant Tasmanian Crayfish.

These are rare crayfish and it is well that they are protected. Thanks mate. I'm not sure but can have a guess at maybe 15+ years. Apparently it takes them around 10 years to reach the minimum size of 10cm, so based on that I'm guessing 15 - 20 years, but that is just a guess.

I surprised nobody in the US didn't try to bring those big guys here. I know they'll end up being invasive, but it's odd nobody tried it.

They would be hard to get over there as they have high oxygen demands. You would need them in water with an aerator.
