Great work. Just a tip if nobody has mentioned it yet. You can put zip ties on your doors. Then you will know if someone has tampered with your pots. You can get different coloured ones so you know they are yours 👌
@OffTheHookFishing2 жыл бұрын
Matts, you should try tying the bait bag to the bottom of the pot. ChrisPFish had a video where we saw crab eating the bait from the outside of the trap in his underwater cam. If you tie it to the bottom where your 5lb weight is, it should ensure that no crab can eat the bait without first climbing in the cage.

I was thinking the same thing, a thick zip tie that won't be easily popped off. Do u think sea lions or seals are smart enough to pop the doors open some how to eat the bait? Maybe it's worth risking a cheap under water camera to see 😂
@ccarterrun2 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. We always use zip ties on those type of pots. They are notorious for popping open. It’s the safer route to go- you just snip them when you pull it up. Great catch by the way!

I remember you saying the cage door is closed as you drove off to drop another pot. It is possible that someone could pick up and take your crab. It’s not a coincidence that a few of your pots were open. Perhaps next time, salmon fish around your crab pots. Like troll in square lines around your pots, and keep an eye out for boats coming around your pots. 🤷🏻♂️

We took tuna sandwiches out there for lunch. And we had 7 up soda in a ice cooler, bag of Fritos corn chips and fruits, corn on the cob. For some reason, if one of us got sea sick, we felt so much better after eating a lunch of these items. The cold 7 up really helps. Any lime soda works fine. Nice fish 🐟

Commercial closures are a good thing. There were multiple whale entanglements from what I read. If all commercial fisheries were closed for a few years, there would be a ridiculous recovery of sea life the likes of which our country has never seen.

the Tekota is a great reel, though IDK of a Shimano Reel that sucks…I haven’t found one yet. I eBay Calcuttas, Trinidads, Tekotas & TLDs of new and used varieties & have way too many. they make me happy when they’re loaded up in my rod holders and even happier when I hook, reel in & land fish.

Seems like you might want to attach a float to your net. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before it ends up in the water. Also have you considered adding a kicker to your boat? I’m sure it would save you some money on gas and it’s good to have a backup if you’re going to be running out 20mi, just a thought.
@FishermansLife2 жыл бұрын
I had a kicker but took it off when the gas line broke. I should put it back on to troll slower for halibut. About they net...if it falls in, well...I'll risk it. Will keep me sharp lol

I prefer to use a metal bait cage attached to the bottom centre of the crab trap with aluminum carabiner-type clips. Also, zip-tie the drop sides of the trap in place, because then they can't accidentally open up if it hits the seafloor wrong. We did once have a seal open up the zip-tie on one side. We know it wasn't a human because we were Right There the entire time and we saw the seal.

Your net is freaking the fish out. Too bright. Flashy Gold coming right at them. Get a Scotty net All Black. Scotty back in the 1980's used to make a net with the rim painted powder sky blue to match the water those were the best if you can find an old one.

I’d recommend fastening the downrigger down when running. There’s a lot of vibration created and it could cause the screws to back themselves out or loose a nut (if bolts were used which I’d recommend) or potentially snap depending on the style and strength of the screws and how good you have it mounted whether you used a piece of wood for backing or had a solid object to screw into. On the downside if it’s mounted super securely be weary of snagging your downrigger ball as something has to give and break in that situation could be potentially dangerous/expensive. Tight lines my guy and quality knots
@acehighantiques83102 жыл бұрын
Snubbers help but yes a nice transom Scotty mount directly connected without the extensions would probably be safer but then you have to lean over the rail wich is potentially dangerous. would be ideal to use something that can be easily disconnected with the quick bolts from Scotty and installed after you get there. Permitting calm waters of course.
