Common Causes of Failed Head Gaskets and Broken Liner Flanges in 3406 and C15 Caterpillar Engines
In this video, we'll discuss the common causes of failed head gaskets and broken liner flanges in 3406 and C15 Caterpillar engines. Understanding these issues can help you diagnose and prevent costly repairs in the future.
What You Will Learn:
- Understand the common causes of head gasket and liner flange failures
- Learn about the construction and critical properties of head gaskets and liners
- Discover the importance of properly supporting the cylinder liner and maintaining the block surface
Step-by-Step Guide/Tutorial:
Step 1: Causes of Head Gasket Failures
Head gaskets are made by bonding layers of metal core with composite material
Critical properties include tensile strength, creep relaxation, and crush resistance
Defective parts could cause failures, but other factors are likely
Step 2: Causes of Liner Flange Failures
Dimensionally measuring a liner is important, but crosshatch and hardness also matter
Issues in casting, machining, and heat treating processes can lead to failures
Step 3: Common Factors Affecting Both Head Gaskets and Liners
The surface condition of the cylinder block supporting the liner flange is critical
Block surface flatness must be within specified tolerances
Erosion and damage to the block surface can cause liner and head gasket failures
Step 4: Proper Repair and Diagnosis
Measure block surfaces accurately, not just liner protrusion
Repair block surfaces with precision to support new components
Understand the importance of quality parts and skilled machinists
Key Benefits:
- Prevents early engine wear and costly repairs
- Ensures proper sealing and support of engine components
- Enhances engine performance and longevity

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS send the block to the machine shop. It's worth the extra money than doing the job over again of which CAT will more than likely pay for some of the parts and you are stuck with the huge balance and labour. Oh yeah, down time too. Inframe are useless! Awesome segment!!! Thank you for putting this out there for guys to see.

I do 3-4 C15/3406 overhauls per month at my shop. These are great engines but the most prevalent reason for tear down is burned head gskt/fire rings, usually at around 600k. I have this conversation with every customer facing this repair. It is foolish and improper to just put a new head gasket on these engines, you must remove the liners. The combustion gases from a burned head gasket go right under the liner flange into the water jacket, thus causing the cooling system to be pressurized push coolant out of the overflow. This erodes the block even further. I have found that virgin blocks usually produce about .004 liner protrusion. When I cut counter bores for .032 shims, I cut them to .030 to give me the maximum .006 liner protrusion.

+tklee7 I never aimed for .006 which is max but you run the risk of breaking liner flange. Also didn't stop head gasket issue and may let it leak oil from shim gasket under spacer plate. One's I have seen that were cut to the max liner height also let shim gasket vibrate per say and eat into the block.

Great info I think is my problem. Had a rebuild 2015 getting coolant coming out of my overflow tube! ??? Whay do you Think??

@@chiefkeefatl8236 my 2003 is the same. Found the head was pressurizing, leading to coolant loss and incorrect temperature readings. Still waiting for the verdict on the second head failure. There is an issue with heads, but a liner may have failed.

It's design issue long before 3406 ever came out it was used on engines before it like 1673, 1674, 1693. Doesn't help that liner sits on top of the block, then shim gasket, spacer plate, head gasket then cylinder head. There's lot of surfaces that move around and that liner vibrates aka fretting that make liner wear into the block that what causes head gasket to blow out. Don't see mid stop block engine eat head gaskets like 3406 series does. Cummins learned this long time ago Cat didn't learn from C10, C12 they were mid stop liners. C12 did eat head gaskets but fix was retorq head bolts twice. I'm CAT certified and work at Peterbilt dealership

well said. I'm a cat engine specialist myself and I agree completely but I'm not complaining lol. these failures keep me busy :)

As a part time engineer like most people I wouldn't have the spacer plate design, its like the 2 piece piston, just seems like a poor engineering design, its called KISS, means keep it simple stupid.
