This video shows one of the more awkward parts of the dig where one of the end pieces has to be excavated before the scrapers can move on to the main strip and self load. Any questions? Leave a comment and i'll reply.

Enjoyed watching the old D8's at work..I used work for Caterpillar at their Glasgow Plant where most of the D8's were manufactured for the Western Hemisphere..they closed the plant after 30 years of manufacturing models like the D6C..D6D..D6E .. D8E .. D8H..D8K..D8L and also the 977L Traxcavator..they blamed a slump in the construction market for the closure, but really it was politics and another nail in the British manufacturing industry, they transferred the work to France and Belgium..no doubt due to being swayed by the EU..as we have found out over the years..anyway..for all those who enjoy watching old machines at work .. check out " Construction of the M74 " on KZfaq See how the early D8's and Scrapers worked in the mid 60's ..no protection or safety here, just true grit from Dick Hampton Earthmoving..the D8's on the video were built less than 2 miles from where they were working!!!..amazing footage..enjoy!!

That push Cat is hopping!! One summer I ran a push Cat that was an ancient pig and I had to manually clutch and shift gears. Boss thought I wasn't working fast enough so then he thought he'd show me how to do it. LOL, after one pass he hopped off and said to "keep up the good work".🤣🤣🤣

You don't see many scraper set ups like this. It is probably done like that here because it is fairly inexpensive to set these up compared to a dedicated scraper. I don't know if you ever saw the Caterpillar Performance Handbook,but in that they have recommended tow scraper combinations for tractors. I have only seen pictures of these when a company had to knock down a pile and these scrapers were the best for climbing the grade. They climbed the grade then loaded on the downhill to smooth out the pile. From your other videos it looks like this company specializes in doing ponds and reservoirs.

I was on a job operating a D8K pulling a 463 Cat scraper and the boss was pushing with a D8H equipped with a dozer, not a push block. In a 10 hour day I probably only felt a harsh tag a couple times. He said he gets close behind and waits until the scraper is a scraper length into the cut before he tags so any impact is absorbed by the scraper and the load. We'd switch once in a while but I never got as smooth as him.

Michael Hirst The problem here is that there is limited space to fill the box. If the scraper kept going before the dozer reached him to push then the scraper would end up digging into the finished elevations in front of him. This is only done in the corners of the excavation.

You'd think the D-8 would pull the scraper on its own? Is the D6 just helping out purely to speed the job up?
@bigmario768
@bigmario768 5 ай бұрын
Your bang on with both questions. They are capable of pulling the scrapers and loading themselves but the d6 is there to help get to grade quicker and also help with how hard the material is. It looks like rather hard material so it also helps have the d6 there to pump load while reducing wear and tear on the undercarriage of the machines by reducing track slips

Would the Crawlers be rotated out and go back to being a 'dozer or once you remove the blade that's that?
@AwesomeEarthmovers
@AwesomeEarthmovers 4 жыл бұрын
bob dyer I don’t exactly understand your question but if you’re asking If the D8K’s can be converted back to dozers, yes they can. The blades are sitting up top and can be put back on quite easily.

@@AwesomeEarthmovers You answered perfectly. I was just wondering if once a 'cat reaches a certain age and the hydraulic system for the blade gets a bit tired if it's now crawler time. Of course I realise systems can be overhauled, but just was wondering. Thanks!

Ben Key just extra time, but it’s the only way to get into the corners unless the dozer pushes it out to where the scraper can get it, which takes even more time.

my god... these are TERRIBLE operators! its called a scraper ( not a stop and ram into the ground -er ) if the d8 operator would let the bowl down slow he could fill the bowl in about 200 feet by himself! you DONT stop, and drop the bowl all the way down in one spot! EVERY time the d6 is pushing hes lifting the rear scraper wheels OFF THE GROUND does that seem right to you?!! NO its not. your wasting fuel and causing extra wear and tear on the machines. get a good set of tracks on the d8k's put the blades back ON ( for more traction weight ) and loose the d6 you dont need it. OR better yet, put a hook on the d8 blades and run BOTH d8s like push - pull unit then you have 2 d8s filling 2 bowls - (1 at a time)
