Howdy y’all!
This video was meant to be a 16k subscriber special, and for that I thank you sincerely. One of my favorite videos I’ve made recently was my work on the Hagia Sophia. In today’s video, which you may consider a follow up, I’ve decided to focus on another, just as important, ancient Roman structure.
Some may consider this structure to be called The Cathedral of Saint Domnius (DOME?), as it is mostly referred to in modern times, but I like to take a step back. To me this beautiful, ancient cathedral is part of the superstructure known as The Mausoleum of Diocletian.
Sitting in modern day Split, Croatia, we will look at this cathedral, which is said to be the oldest continuously operated Catholic Cathedral in the world (which has not undergone any rebuilds). It was first consecrated in the early 600’s, and since then has stood in much the same fashion as it does today - serving as a beautiful palace of worship, and a marker of Old World Roman Architecture.
But what sits further below the surface? It’s a history we will discuss that’s absolutely fascinating to say the least.
Today we will look at the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, The Mausoleum of Diocletian, the connection between the two namesakes, the repurposing of Roman forts, Dalmatia, Dalmatians, Illyria, and the rise of the Roman Church. For me this is very enthralling research accompanied by some thought provoking questions and images - let’s dive right in!
