I am starting to watch the show Chosen; although it isn’t explicitly Catholic, I still enjoy it for its faithful representation of the origin of the Christian faith: The Gospels of Christ Jesus. I recommend it to anyone who has some difficulty understanding biblical context, and would like to have a visual counterpart to the Holy Scripture. 😊

Yes it’s a great show… it is openly Christian but not in an anti-Catholic way. Johnathan Roamie (Jesus) is a devout Catholic. I enjoyed it, great actors and gives extras that aren’t scripture but give a “theorized” back story on lesser people in the Old Testament which is interesting

Couple of recommendations: Hacksaw Ridge - quite graphic and gory due to is war plot but has good messages about perseverance in one belief's, main character is Catholic too and prays God for His help throughout the film. Little Boy - Very nice & touching movie about the power of faith, even though it is more addressed in a humanistic way rather than religious, the messages are there (gospel of faith included). You'll cry at the end.

@@TheReligiousHippie I wanted to see Silence because the trailer looked promising, nevertheless I informed myself previously (hard to trust in any modern "Catholic" movie) and I found out its plot and message which is dangerous and anti-catholic. Basically, it displays that somehow, sometimes it is ok to apostatize "for the greater good". Disrespectful for many martyrs and contrary to what Our Lord said: “But he that shall deny me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 10:33).

@@raymundoaramburo6421 I've read the novel and seen the film for "Silence" and I don't believe it's anti-Catholic. Neither, I believe, condone apostasy. The novel is written by a Japanese Catholic. The underlying themes are suffering and coping with it under persecution of faith when it seems God is "silent". Yet it goes much much deeper than that.

I absolutely love Vincent Price and now want to watch Song of Bernadette because I heard he was in it. True story time, Price was a convert catholic, and the story of how his wife found out is really nice. Vincent married a catholic, though her name slips my mind, and they moved to America, I think L.A. For a few weeks, he started coming home from work really late. his wife got really worried, believing Vincent to be cheating on him because he was coming at like 3 a.m. She confronted Vincent about it and he pulled out of his pocket some prayer books and revealed that he was surprising her for their anniversary, he had been going to late night classes on Catholicism and converted, later being baptized. "Pray for me, Bernadette" -Vincent Price, Song of Bernadette

May I recommend The Exorcist. I know it is an R rated film, but there is nothing more heroic about Catholic priests sacrificing their lives to save a 12 year old girl possessed by a demon. Another series I can recommend is the HBO Chernobyl mini series. I know it is not Catholic themed but it portrays very well what Godless ideologies like socialism/communism are capable of. It shows very well what the consequences are when we reject God.

Yes, but I would recommend the original 1973 version of The Exorcist which is much better than the 2000 version. Also the book, the original 1971 version is way better than the 2011 one. Also another good movie (for adults) is the 1990 film Jacob's Ladder. That movie goes hand in hand with Dante's Inferno. If you haven't seen the silent film of Inferno, I recommend looking it up here on KZfaq.

I disagree wholeheartedly as this movie is meant to be a scary horror movie and I watched it with my sister many years ago (1973 version) and it was very deeply disturbing and it is a movie for Entertainment purposes and to keep people on the edge of their sits. I found this movie very dark in and of itself except for fact the the priests prevails.

As a student of film history, I'd like to offer some noteworthy movies for all Catholics and Christians (Some are on the Vatican's top 45 list): Andrei Rublev (Tarkovsky) - On the Vatican List The Sacrifice (Tarkovsky) - On the Vatican List Nostalghia (Tarkovsky) Winter Light (Bergman) Wild Strawberries (Bergman) - On the Vatican List Cries and Whispers (Bergman) Through a Glass Darkly (Bergman) The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer) - On the Vatican List Ordet (dreyer) - On the Vatican List The Flowers of St. Francis (Rossellini) - On the Vatican List Rome, Open City (Rossellini) - On the Vatican List Viridiana (Bunuel) Nazarin (Bunuel) - On the Vatican List Marketa Lazarova (Vlalic) Au Hasard Balthazar (Bresson) A Man Escaped (Bresson) Diary of a Country Priest (Bresson) It's a Wonderful Life (Capra) - On the Vatican List On the Waterfront (Kazan) - On the Vatican List My Night at Maud's (Rohmer) City Lights (Chaplin) Modern Times (Chaplin) - On the Vatican List The Tree of Life (Malick) Bicycle Thieves (De Sica) - On the Vatican List Babette's Feast - On the Vatican List Citizen Kane (Wells) - On the Vatican List Grand Illusion (Renoir) - On the Vatican List Napoleon (1927) - On the Vatican List The Leopard (Visconti) - On the Vatican List Fantasia (1940) - On the Vatican List Non-Narrative films: Antonio Gaudi (Teshigahara) The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach You might not like them all but I promise there is some truly edifying stuff on this list.

Great list but I disagree with a couple of your Bergman choices: Cries and Whispers is especially inappropriate for a Catholic audience. Nor really is Through a Glass Darkly (or any of his God trilogy), with Bergman's confused, austere agnostic Lutherism fully on display. I would kind of recommend Fanny & Alexander for it's wonderful celebration of families, but for the somewhat occultic elements towards it's conclusion. Tarkovsky can be hard work for a casual viewer but the Bresson movies are fantastic. The Vatican film list is actually a great selection.

"The mission" is a stone cold classic. Seriously it is one of the most under rated movies I've ever seen. I dont get emotional at movies, I'm pretty stoic but the mission hit me hard in the feels. Personally I think its Robert DeNiro's finest hour, his character development is Biblical in its redemption arc. Also let me recommend "The Thin red line" by Terrence Malick(who is Catholic).

I'm glad you mentioned October Baby. I watched it several times while I was a Protestant and loved it. The other day I watched it and it has the Cathedral of our diocese in it. I go there about once a month besides going to our parish. Beautiful Church. The bishop mentioned in the credits is the bishop I met during the Rite of Election and now a Facebook friend. God bless you. The theater in the movie is the Alabama theater. My parents took me there to see the Sound of Music when it came out in the 1960s. I'm telling my age now lol. Actually, the Sound of Music began my journey to Catholicism. I was fascinated with the nuns in the movie so I checked out the local monastery just driving around when I was in my teens. That monastery is now EWTN. My journey took too long as I resisted because of some lies and didn't go and ask a priest. One of my favorite Catholic movies is Polycarp, from 2016 I think. It's on Tubi TV. I've been tempted to buy the DVD, but since I can watch it for free, I usually buy a movie about one of the saints.

Hi Amber! Here two movies that are related together that I highly recommend : "The Robe" (1953) and "Demetrius and the gladiators"(1954)! They really touched my heart, espicially in The Robe one! Here some little descriptions: (The Robe): In the Roman province of Judea during the 1st century, Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio is ordered to crucify Jesus of Nazareth but is tormented by his guilty conscience afterwards. "Demetrius and the gladiators":In 1st century Rome, Christian slave Demetrius is sent to fight in the gladiatorial arena and Emperor Caligula seeks Jesus' robe for its supposedly magical powers." Demetrius is in the 2 movies and is played by a very talented actor I love, Victor Mature! Hope you want to watch it, it is worth it!

What's interesting is if you try to imagine the film "The Matrix" as a religious movie also containing themes of spirituality, Catholicism. Wherein all of us are very mild-mannered people, cut from a mode that is manufactured in order to keep society perfect & orderly--but alas may not bring us happiness unless we learn to think of our lives in deeper terms. It does not mean everything for Thomas Andersen simply to work for his office career; happily leaving it for something more heroic and attentive to his personal problems. Finding out that the limits of science are not really what we percieve them at-fist to be that surviving a certain form of education are we capable of transcending the boring & fake reality, in order to do miraculous things that turn the tide against evil in the name of eternal good. As if Neo's "soul" is the person trapped within the cacophony made by the artificial intelligence and exploring this reality will make him more powerful, as those who encounter the teachings of Jesus can overcome the difficulties pressed upon them by boisterious unbelievers. Real Talk.

*Kingdom of Heaven* is not necessarily a Catholic film per say, but since it's about the Crusades Catholicism naturally plays a role. It's about Balian, a blacksmith, who loses his wife to a suicide and to save her soul from eternal damnation, he joins the Crusades to defend the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the army of Saladin. He thus gets caught up in a Holy War all while struggeling to maintain his faith. If you watch it, please watch the Director's Cut. Another pretty good Bible movie is the *Prince of Egypt* . This animation by Dreamworks is one of the best Moses story on the market, even if it changed scripture a little bit (most notibly the relation between Moses and the Pharaoh).

You might like the other newer Fatima movie called, The 13th Day. It is low budget but really great.

I would suggest the movie Roe v. Wade as well and explained what happened in the 1960s that made abortion legal in the United States the other movie that I would suggest would be the latest gods not dead movie when it comes out if it’s not out already it is about parents who want to homeschool their children because of what is going on in the Public school system

I love the new Fatima movie, even bought it. I feel like everyone is being so hard on it, but I enjoyed it. It's a movie, not catechism class or Bible study. It's definitely not a documentary either, it's just wholesome entertainment. If anything it may pique someone's interest enough to go and research further & actually find all the facts about Fatima. But I don't bash catholic entertainment, there's barely any new stuff out there as it is. It's entertainment, like Lord of the Rings, Infidel, etc. I love it. Oh and the new Divine Mercy movie I like too!

May I recommend the 2009 film "Into Temptation". It is definitely not for children; it is rated R and has strong sexual themes. It's about this Catholic Priest who is willing to sacrifice his good name and reputation by diving into the seedy world of the sex trade, all in a effort to find and save the life of a woman who told him in confession that she was going to commit suicide. It's really a great film and a rare time in Hollywood where the Catholics aren't the bad guys. Approach it with an open mind and I'm sure you'll like it. The surprise ending is great.

I hope you read this. I loved watching that. October Baby is a good movie. I took a quick glance on the list. Three movies not mentioned. All from the 1950's that are Catholic themed: 'On the Waterfront' (1954) with Marlon Brando, eve Marie Saint & Karl Maldon who plays a Catholic priest about gang Controlled unions along the docks in New York. (Won Best Picture) 'Marty' (1955) A great romance movie of a 34 year old man, a butcher in New York, who is still single, with all is siblings married, lives with his mother & finally goes out with a woman who was dumped on a blind date. He is a Catholic. (Won Best Picture & the Golden Palm in France) 'The Wrong Man' is an Alfred Hitchcock movie, that is based on real life events. This movie has so many Catholic themes. The wrongly identified man prays the Rosary, etc. I describe that movie in one word, bleak.

Agree with many of your choices although I'm surprised you didn't mention Going My Way or the Bells of St. Mary. I'd like to also throw in the Two Popes that came out recently. Just watched it this morning. As far as The Exorcism of Emily Rose unless I'm mistaken Emily Rose was a fictional character. The movie is inspired by the exorcism of Annaliese Michel that died in 1976 in Germany. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d96fiLpkudSUYY18.htmlf you get around to watching Silence I hope you do a review. I was sorta conflicted about the end of the movie on whether the priest did the right thing. Would like to hear your thoughts on it.

The Song of Bernadette is on youtube Jennifer Jones does a great job in A Portrait of Jeannie with a repectful representation of nuns in a convent school I highly recommend Come to the Stable it's an amazing Catholic film from 1946!!! Ida is a very artistic drama film representing a catholic novice about to take her vows in 1960s Poland Touched By an Angle may not be Catholic but there's alot of enjoyment and thought provoking messages Bells of Saint Mary's is a great Catholic film from the 1940's Mother Angelica Live has plenty of episodes on KZfaq St Mary Mazarello House of Happiness is a great Catholic film on KZfaq

The exorcism of Emily Rose is based on true story of annelisse michel. There is a documentary movie about this German teen girl and it is 100x scarier than this horror. It is including real exorcism tapes with demon voices. So not for everyone. As Pole i would recommend "Popiełuszko. Freedom is within us".

The Conjuring movies are great. While other movies sugarcoat witches or Satan, this movie doesn't. Instead it showed the simple truth, they lead to death. Also the Conjuring showed the romance between a married couples, staying faithful to God and each other. While most movies showed premarital sex. For real, this is a mainstream movie that show fidelity, purity and faith as good. Also Lorraine carries a rosary in her hands. Plus, this movie earn is about the inherent evil of paranormal events while many only believe in ghosts but not God. Consider how some horror movie mock Christianity, this film is pretty unique.
