Fantastic to see your creation to take care of your cats. Over here in the uk I’m looking at a product called protect a pet. It’s going to cost around £2000 for our large garden ( around your size) you have given me some great ideas 👍

Thanks Richard. Heard your accent than saw a squirrel! An Aussie in America. Beauty. I’ve been looking for wats to keep my upcoming cats in the yard. Just moved to Warracknabeal. Finally got land for the cats. This to me is actually not that ugly- lotsa plastic would’ve been worse (to me, anyways). I’ll probably paint the wood and fence all a lovely olive shade and they’ll blend away together. Up here in the bush i like the way stuff doesn’t look like it came off of The Block - people patch all sorts together . So thanks mate. Keeping a link to this. Hope the cats don't get over (i did watch a couple videos where cars got over such a creation. Yet others don’t. Monsters. Thank you

Hi! Great suggestion on painting the fence and wood the same color - and olive would be wonderful. Thank you for the tip - am totally gonna do it! Yeah, I would rather live where things are patched together than in a cookie-cutter new home in a bland subdivision where everything looks exactly the same. So far none of my 7 have escaped. I try, ever couple of weeks or so, to go around and identify the weakest section and remediate it (kind of like looking for a weak point in a prison and fixing it before anyone figures out how to exploit it, eh?). All the best! Cheers!

We have a 6 foot high colourbond fence that keeps our moggy in. He loves to sit up on the laundry roof and survey out over the neighbours yards. Ash is nearly 15 years old so he doesnt really do a lot of climbing he more likes to just lay and sleep :D Awesome job and I totally understand how much relief it has given you.

Glad your younger cat enjoys looking at the neighbor's yards and your older cat is enjoying retirement and snoozing! Thank you - yes, it gives me great relief. I couldn't imagine them roaming the neighborhood freely - way too dangerous in suburbia such as mine.

I would not class that as ugly at all... It's about the best idea I've seen... I really wish I could do that myself... Would suggest NOT changing it to a ninety degrees your cats will work out a way to jump onto a flat surface, they can jump pretty high... Also I would not recommend using plastic coated wire as it rots falls off, if your cats eat it might cause a few problems..... Now your cats have a great safe are to run around in... Thank you for sharing Richard Cheers from Veronica from Melbourne Australia 🐾🐾 🥰

Hi Veronica. I've only been through Melbourne a couple of times (mostly to escape Tassie decades ago - ha! ha!). I miss the amazing food in Melbourne. All the Vietnamese, Greek and Italian food. My mouth is watering at the memory of it! Yep, in hindsight, I agree with you about not changing it to 90 degrees. Good tip on not using plastic coated wire - I hadn't thought about how it disintegrates over time in the sun and drops bits of plastic. Thank you!

@@richardbarber5911 so cute, and cheeky! we're thinking of DIY-ing it in our garden, cos the professional kits are so expensive to have installed. Considering an option like what you have done, or buying a Protectapet mesh/bracket kit and attempting it ourselves. Just got no idea if it will keep our cats in, it's a worry. The only other option is a stand-alone enclosure, but I know they'd prefer independent access in and out of the house, as they've never had that - they're all indoor rescues, or only get out if supervised, which (as you know) is very time-consuming! Is your system still keeping your cats safe in the garden?
@richardbarber5911
@richardbarber5911 Жыл бұрын
@@amabla975Wow! And I thought I'd seen all the kits available - I was wrong. I hadn't heard of Protectapet. Googled it. Looks good. Does the same job my home-made hack does. So, yep, my system is, indeed, keeping everyone safe in the garden. My escape artist - Luna - went up the fence a couple of times and encountered the netting. Couldn't get over it - not even close to being able to. Since then she has never tried again.

My problem with this is that it will keep my cats in, but it won't stop other cats from climbing into my yard...then they won't be able to get out and I will end up with a yard full of stray cats!
@richardbarber5911
@richardbarber5911 3 ай бұрын
I had the same problem a couple of times. A neighborhood cat would jump in, not be able to get out and I would wake up at 3 in the morning to a meowing stand-off between my cats and the neighborhood cat. I scooped up all my cats, locked them inside, opened up the side gate and walked after the neighborhood cat until it found the open gate and ran off. This happened twice. Now, months later, I see the same cat walking along my fence, but never again jumping in. Not sure of a more elegant solution, but if you have any ideas, let us all know. Thanks!

A local neighborhood cat used to find a way in and then get trapped. And it took a whole rigamarole to get my cats inside and her outside. Then, I found the entry point - a tiny fold in the netting at a corner near a telegraph pole. I stapled up the corner and wrapped the telegraph pole in sheet metal and since then (6 months ago) I have had no cats come in.

Just thinking about doing something similar to my yard. After a year of being tethered to a long leash and harness, my Gary has learned he can jump the fence to the neighbors. I hate to shorten his leash because my back yard is narrow so it would only give him about 5 feet radius. So, can you provide an update on how this worked out after all this time now? Have the cats been able to figure it out and/or did you move the posts to the flat angle so your neighbors couldn't see it?
@richardbarber5911
@richardbarber5911 2 ай бұрын
Hi. Thanks for your questions. No, I didn't move the posts to the flat angle - I decided to leave them as they are. Twice a year I walk around with a staple gun and put in a few extra staples here and there, just to stay on top of keeping the netting secure. The cats have not been able to get over it. Yay! They don't even try. They are living the life having 24/7 access to the yard whenever they want it :)

Tried all kinds of blocking but he squeezes through the smallest gap.. I worry for his safety as I have 7 dogs and 2 cats who want to beat him up!

Doesn’t this trap other unwanted wild animals in your yard too (squirrels, stray cats, etc.)?
@richardbarber5911
@richardbarber5911 Жыл бұрын
Yes. It happened twice. A roaming neighborhood cat (who is a friendly little chap who doesn't bother anyone and I'm trying to gently educate my neighbors that they shouldn't get their knickers in a knot about him) jumped from the fence into my backyard. My crew woke me up around 3am with some growling, moaning, hissing and all the usual. The poor little bugger couldn't get out, despite running frantically around the fence line trying to get up and over. So, I herded up my crew. Put them inside. Blocked the cat doors so they couldn't access the back yard. Wrote all their names on a piece of paper and put a check mark next to each name as I walked around and got a head count (yes, it pays to be that anal when you have many cats and you're sleepy at 3am). Then....I went outside and opened up the side gate and walked behind the visitor until he got to that gate and he shot out at 100mph, safe to roam the neighborhood again. (He's not a candidate for acclimating to a home. Fairly feral and very wary of people. He's also car and street savvy so I'm not too worried about him).
@Sanchitoooo
@Sanchitoooo Жыл бұрын
@@richardbarber5911 Wow great story haha. My neighborhood has tons of feral cats and coyotes and whatnot, so probably wouldn't be a good idea for me. There's a bunch of tall trees and they all climb and hop around from yard to yard freely

@@richardbarber5911 I was going to ask if your cats had test drive on the fence, but I guess the neighbours cat tested it well :) I had same looking chicken net on catio ... It hold my previous normal 3 cats for 5 years before 1 had made hole... Now I have thou stubborn 9kg cat... with drama for anything closed. He has demolished cat door with previous owner. Bend window frame enough that he escaped and walked true new chicken net on catio... in a blink. 3 normal cat harnesses destroyed, lol... Everything must be reinforced.
