I used PALRUF PVC Roof Panels from Home Depot.
You can also get them at Lowe's, under a different brand.
These are the clear wavy ones, which were about $15 each, for the 8 footers.
Just search either site for PVC ROOF PANEL
I drilled pilot holes, and used fasteners shorter than the suggested ones, because it's PVC, not metal.
You have to check for spots they might get out. Video footage helps. We bought a home and moved, and I am currently using a low voltage electric wire at the top of my new fence, but one cat still got out, because the wire only sends a tiny shock every second. Definitely wasn't my first choice, but we had to get something up very quickly, in order to move them.
The first one is similar to one I saw that used round aluminum rollers at the top of the fence...
• Bengal Kitten vs Oscil...
Bengal Kitten vs Oscillot Cat Containment System
This second one, simply uses netting, at an angle...
• Cats on video trying t...
Cats on video trying to escape Purrfect Fence
Blacky climbing over fence, thwarted...
This will keep the cats in, but I will have to put more plastic panels on the other side to help keep the raccoons out, but that's a whole other challenge, because raccoons can find many other way in. Worst case: I'll cover the whole thing with string netting.

Your cat is so cute!!! Our neighbor just lost a cat from an eagle swooping in and taking her. My cats, I use an indoor cage, attached it to our house, and they can access it thru a window. I wont have to worry about the hawk I see, every evening, swooping in to take one of my feline friends. Also, I have raccoons, and two years ago, one climb inside our fenced area that had my poodle. An attack occurred, and the raccoon won. We had to put down our poodle. (RIP) Thus, I worry about other animals and how to 'deter' them from entering my property and getting to my cats and poodle I have now. Especially the animals that fly in.... I used the scalloped plastic roofing panels at the base, on 12 ten foot long panels (gets expensive) then let weeds with thicker stalks grow up the outside part... as the kittens can put their heads thru the kennel fencing... we have coyote, hawks, owls and fox and occasional dogs in neighborhood owners allow to run loose at night... kittens do not know the dangers that lurk outside their (length of the house kennel-run).... so I’m doing everything I can to barricade the roaming area.... THANKS FOR POSTING YOUR IDEA... I may have to resort and buy more scalloped roof panels and affix them on top of each of my 12 sections...

I saw this video last autumn and I thought "BRILLIANT!" so I installed plastic sheets on my (chain link) fence. Then, in February and March, we had 3 RAGING wind storms (wind gusts between 60 and 82 mph). Guess what? Those plastic sheets act like sails! My fence was VIOLENTLY yanked away from the house and thrown into the yard, all mangled. So, good concept, but back to the drawing board for me.
@2sharestuff
@2sharestuff 7 жыл бұрын
That's a serious bummer. Depending on the length needed, you may be able to afford to build a solid wood fence, and add the plastic panels. This way, you have a nice wind barrier, which I'm sure the cats, or anybody in the yard would be happy about. Plus, you get the added privacy bonus. Please let me know what you come up with. I'm curious. I guess it's that "problem solver" part of me that want's to know if you found a good solution.

Great idea. I have 8 cats but only 2 are making it over the 6ft chainlink fence. The other sides are 8ft and he found a weak spot...he uses the windowsill to catapult himself to the top of the fence. Rawr! I'm in Florida so there is retention pond behind me with a small gator and a huge lake next to that where his friends are I'm certain of it. Now I just need to figure out how to attach those panels to the chainlink.

You can also add one half of large diameter PVC pipe (like 4" guttering) that sicks out on that side creating smooth hard overhang like they have on some prison walls. And there are various "pipe rollers" that are a whole 2" pipe attached so it can rotate when kitty tries to put its paw on it.

4 inch pop will work on some cats and actually worked on one of mine for four years. Couple of them still got out but after about four years they all started climbing over it so I replaced it and put a 4 foot garden fence on top of the regular fence and use the UVC or whatever that 4 inch pipe that’s about 10 foot long to hold up the garden fence or a few of the pipes of course because they can’t climb up. A 10 foot EDC pipe but if you put it horizontally at the top eventually they’ll make it over on most of them. Well I had two very team females they never went over but the rest did.

@user-jx6rk7cm2e

And here in Australia you should search for "polycarbonate" sheets, they are usually 99% UV protected and probably (in 2024) about $30 for 2.5 metres. They are 2.5m long, but about a metre wide, so you can easily cut them down the middle, giving you 2 lots of 50cm wide sheets that are still 2.5 metres long. I reckon 50cm is enough to stop the cats from escaping. I am actually about to try this very method for my cats, so I guess I am gonna find out!.

I’ve been looking for something that will work here, but besides the fence, which is around the whole backyard, there is a tree they use to access one of their favorite spots...a flat-roof area off the garage, where the view the world from, when not roaming! It’s only 6-8 feet from the back of the yard where the neighbor’s fence is. Pretty sure the’d take the leap! I don’t want to take THAT away from them too, but the increase in traffic (speeders on neighborhood streets) is aging me quickly!

@@sarahallenhumboldt2638 I see. I have that set up for many years now. Works with my cats. Can't say anything about other people's set up - whether their net looks loose or not (should look a bit loose, not stretched), whether any gaps exist between the net and the fence, whether they have trees or other structures next to the fence that cats could use to climb/jump over the net, etc. I'd pay attention to those things as everyone's place is different.

I have told a friend about this video. She has a problem with a couple of cats thinking the grass is greener on the other side. She too has a neighbor that doesn't like cats. When she lets 2 of her cats out in the fenced in back yard she has to stay out there with them so they don't get over the fence. And that really defeats the purpose of having a fenced in back yard. I was wondering if this is still working for you keeping your cats in. She wants to get the material but she has a huge back yard and is going to need several sheets of the roofing panels and it will be a bit expensive but well worth it if it works.

Do NOT use plastic. Aluminum pieces of thin pipe in a row threaded through with a solid dowel is more fun and less plastic at the top of the fence.

What did you use to attach it to fence, And do you think it can be done also with a chain link fence?

I used roofing screws (the ones with the rubber lined washers). Tried not to use too many, for fear they might use them to climb with. Buy the shortest screws, and attach them where the plastic touches the lumber. The KZfaq user above @Pat Martinez said they tried it with a chain link fence, so perhaps inquire with them. Worst case, you could attach some 2x2 stakes to the fence, then attach the plastic to the 2x2's. Be sure to paint them, for longevity. +Pat Martinez
