Күн бұрын

We built a 96 foot long cattle panel trellis to grow all of our winter squash on. We eat a lot of small pumpkins (sugar pie and flatso varieties) spaghetti squash and butternut squash. We usually plant them flat on the ground and this ends up being a jungle of vines. So this year we decided we would trellis all of them. The plants will be rooted under the trellis and the vines will be trained on the outside surface of the trellis. Rooting the plants under the trellis makes for a smaller overall footprint of the trellis.

I like how you addressed the need to make the structure sturdy and well anchored, to prevent it from being damaged by high velocity winds. You did a great job on this build. And your little garden fairy is adorable! 🥰

Fantastic work on the trellis! It’s great to see such a practical and innovative approach to growing winter squash. The 96-foot design not only saves space but seems like it will make harvesting a breeze compared to navigating a ground-level vine jungle. We’ve been looking for ways to optimize our garden setup and seeing your trellis in action is truly inspiring! Thanks for the detailed breakdown and the helpful links-definitely considering this for our next garden upgrade. Keep up the great work; I'm looking forward to seeing your harvest results!

LOVE the long tunnel! I've had 13 panels for a long time. This year, I'm making a LONG tunnel like this. I've already moved them. One thing I have learned over the past 8 years growing this way, is that the beds where I put the panel base in the MIDDLE of the beds perform great. Not on the edge of the bed. I plant the vines to grow inside to outside, and it shades products like lettuce inside, and on the outside for full sun, peppers. Some panels, I experimented doing a M or double hoop where they meet in the middle, those are the best. I have plans to do 4 long tunnels where they meet like a M eventually. It might take awhile to get that many panels. The other thing I always wondered was should I align them East to West or North to South. East to West works good for me. Good Instructions, thank you.
@SalmonCreekLiving
@SalmonCreekLiving 2 ай бұрын
You definitely sound like you know your way around trellis growing!! We plan to try some lettuce under this trellis. Maybe something a little more heat tolerant like romaine. My trellis openings face north and south. This is just because of the way our entire garden is laid out. However, if I had it facing east to west, it would seem to me that my north side would not receive much sun. Either way good luck with your new tunnel!
@lrmsmrls16
@lrmsmrls16 2 ай бұрын
@@SalmonCreekLiving I was concerned about the N side too. However, I’ve had equal harvest off both sides. I think the vining plants really cover the centers well and it just doesn’t seem to matter. I’ve grown small melons, squash, beans, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers all successfully.

Excellent job, best build I have seen in a long time. What are your thoughts of making a greenhouse on maybe a quarter of the tunnel. For people in the north, it would allow plants to get started early because of the short growing season.
@SalmonCreekLiving
@SalmonCreekLiving 2 ай бұрын
Thank You! We are putting a lot of thought into making it a greenhouse for the winter. If I do it will most likely be used to extend the fall season on some broccoli and brussels sprouts. Our winters are fairly mild here in zone 8.

Yes, snakes can hide under there. I live in NY, so we don't have poisonous snakes, but I hate every one. I've been known to go shoot them when they are sunning themselves on the manure pile, and once, I had a pitchfork in my hand spreading mulch out in the garden when one slithered out, and I shot the pitchfork at it and one tine actually speared it. Lucky shot!! I plan on trellising much more this year. I'm always dragging cattle panels around for various uses. You do an excellent job filming and those are the sturdiest panels I've ever seen. I'm always just 'sewing' them together with balin' twine. LOL!

You are lucky to not have poisonous snakes. We have cotton mouths, copperheads and rattle snakes to worry about!!! As for the pitchfork shot, that sounds like all skills to me!! Haha. @@SalmonCreekLiving My mother was from Alabama (only 10 miles from where Jim Neighbors grew up, LOL!) and had snake stories. Even on the border of NY/PA, there are mountain rattlers, so I've been told, and my farrier grew up near Philly, about a mile from the Susquehanna, and said there were copperheads down in the rocks on the river bank. I'm just above the PA border - and hope they don't move north in 'global warming'.... Take care!

Outstanding. A master at the age of 30 just like me...30+ years ago. Consider adding a galvanized ridge pipe and 2 sides right where your cable ties in. I did this myself with grapes. Here is the downfalls of iit from my experience One side may get shaded more than other. The top was hard to harvest and was slow and challenging. Hard to wrap if attacked by wasps as I don’t use poison. And lastly it’s spendy. I took it down and now working on vertical walls to give garden dimension and a maze feel with the new food forest in the desert lol

It will definitely be a learning experience. I plan to only grow winter squash on it. I think with mine facing North to South the plants will get an even amount of light. They may not get full sun because one side will get more sun in the a.m. and less in the p.m. And of course vice versa

Quantum, Your tunnel doesn't necessarily have to be tall & out of reach. If you make your tunnel wider, the top is automatically lowered. I didn't want to have to grab a stool/ladder to harvest, so the tunnel is high as my arm can reach when I lift it straight up. No strain!!

Love the video, catching up on your library. Curious about one thing. What state is Salmon Creek in? It's just I'm picking up like 12 accents and I want a reference. The internet is giving me Washington and California and that doesn't track with the accents. I would expect Alabama or Mississippi. There is some creole mixed in there.

I like how you put your build together. My one comment would be to replace pressure treated wood with Neem Oil painted wood. Pressure treated wood contains cyanide which will leach into your soil over time and then be absorbed by your plants that you are growing.
@SalmonCreekLiving
@SalmonCreekLiving 3 ай бұрын
No doubt treated lumber always brings up controversy. At the end of the day I think we should always use what works best for our own situation. We grow to become as self sufficient as possible. Personally I am much much more concerned about the herbicides and insecticides that are sprayed directly on the foods we consume. If you can stay away from those then you are way ahead of the game from a health standpoint. But if you are have the extra time to use the Neem oil, then that sounds great to me!! Thanks for the comment.

@@SalmonCreekLiving You speak the truth. I have been gardening a long time and do so organically. I use intercrop techniques that includes permaculture. We now grow the majority of our fruits and vegetables at home. Then, use canning, dehydrating, and freeze drying to keep foods up to a year. We save a lot of money over the year just by gardening.

How much does a section of cattle fence cost nowadays? $300? ,$400? What did that whole setup cost?

Absolutely! We may do that to this one. I would recommend putting the raised bed boards on the outside of the T post. I put my "level" boards on the inside of the T post so I am going to need to add something on the outside to secure the greenhouse plastic to.
