One Error: Diamonds DO burn. At 720°C/1328°F. This temperature is usually reached when cremating bodies (although it is possible to keep it a bit lower).
@johnleake5657

Yes, that statement surprised me, especially as the mortician stated the temperature of the oven was 1600°F (871°C).
@parasharkchari
@parasharkchari 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. I think the best bet is the way this guy did it with putting the diamonds inside the body, meaning they're insulated throughout the majority of the time the body is being cremated. Even then, you'd have to be judicious about it and time when you turn the heat down so that you don't vaporize the diamonds -- but presumably, McGoohan's character is familiar with how to do just that.
@thedeplorable8370
@thedeplorable8370 2 жыл бұрын
Hey im not trying to be rude, nut I think you are wrong. Diamonds are highly compressed carbon, which has a melting point of almost 4000C. Due to diamond’s density, the range would be slightly higher, maybe 4050-4120C. Ceramic flower pots are carbon based clay and can withstand the blaze of thermite.
@parasharkchari
@parasharkchari 2 жыл бұрын
@@thedeplorable8370 Yes, the melting point is very high and the vaporization temperature is indeed actually lower than that. It so happens that this is also true of coal and graphite, btw. The difference between them is available oxygen content. Under normal atmospheric conditions, diamonds don't really burn even at 1600 F simply because there isn't usually enough oxygen available. You'd likely only get some surface ablation. If you place diamonds into a kiln or something, nothing much will happen below that 4000 C range (assuming you can get up there). Open air demonstrations of burning diamonds tends to involve some additional injection of oxygen. To really burn a diamond, you actually need an oxidizing flame such as oxyacetylene or nitrous injection into propane flames. If I'm not mistaken, though, oxidizing flames are anyway necessary for cremation furnaces because even human flesh runs into the same problem. Someone else can correct me on this because given that cremation is otherwise doable on open pyres, one could just get by with a proper influx of fresh air. I just figured that furnaces are more resource-efficient and faster than an open pyre, so they might well be raising that efficiency by raising oxygen content within the furnace. Still, the trick he uses involves hiding it inside the body, so the diamonds will be pretty well shielded until you get to a certain point in the cremation. Either way, I believe he'd have to remove the diamonds early and then finish off the cremation.

A little bit of break from reality in this episode: After the cremation the remains are ground up in a mortar and pestle. So, if there was the piece of shrapnel in the remains, the undertaker is sure to find it. It means that there is no way you can expect the piece of metal to be in the urn, as done by Columbo.

For some reason they never say that pieces of bone need to be crushed after cremation, and that aspect wasn't on Columbo's tour; maybe that's a Hollywood thing? Or American squeamishness? Anyway, maybe he was in such a hurry, he didn't do a good job. Of course the ending isn't on KZfaq, so it took me a while to find the "shrapnel in the ashes" reveal.

Just out of curiosity, when was this episode filmed and then released?

Aired on October 8th 1998, but filmed in the late summer and early Fall of 1997, so it was a year after filming before it finally aired on ABC.

@@cheesemeister9610 Back in the ABC era of the show, many of the programs were filmed over a year before they were ever transmitted. Very long gaps, especially when they started to become less and less of them from around 1995 onward. The Billy Connolly episode "Murder With Too Many Notes" was a prime example, aired in March 2001 but was taped back in January 2000, during the rainy season in Los Angeles, which you can see during the scene when Columbo drives Billy's character home, the LA roads were soaked wet after recent winter rain storms in the city.

Just going to point out that diamonds do burn .. they are very close to coal. 690c-840c. A crematory oven runs at 800c. So the collar would have burned up

He would not have had, as Columbo would have informed his staff where he was going, and by this point everyone knew Columbo was leading the investigation, and all fingers of suspicion would have gone to him. No, he would not have dared.
