Of course it's funny and ironic that his OCD over something as petty as the cider hangs him. It's also ironic that this shabby looking man nabs him by excelling at all the fine qualities of character that he supposedly stands for--logic, attention to detail, justice, and professionalism--but he actually betrayed. The Colonel basically made himself the number 1 suspect to Columbo when he hesitated to identify the cleaning rag when the Cadet Springer had no problem identifying it immediately when Colombo asked him what it was. There was also the powerful explosive C4 Columbo found had been used in the cannon, Rumford told Columbo they didn't use it at the academy, so obviously somebody high up at the academy had to bring it in from the outside. Columbo also suggested to Rumford that since founders day was one of only 3 days when he fired the cannon personally, then if it it was deliberately set to explode when it was fired, it was meant to kill him.

" . . . you know I very much wanted to identify that rag immediately, but I couldn't get it out . . . " That's actually a very sinister line, revealing the true depths of evil of the man because his plan depended on Springer taking the fall for the whole thing.
@patrickjohnson5658
@patrickjohnson5658 2 жыл бұрын
I think his plan depended on there being no full investigation just a dismissal of it as a tragic accident with an aging gun. He could get Springer to take the fall for the rag, but not for substituting the blank charge in the gun for a live explosive charge which the investigation uncovered. I can't see a mere cadet having access to high explosives to put in the back of the cannon to replace the blank charge.
@SECRETARIATguy224
@SECRETARIATguy224 2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickjohnson5658 No, because in the episode he actually called Springer in when his whole plan wasn't working [because Columbo wasn't buying it] and told Springer there was a good chance he would be charged with murder. That shows that he intended the whole thing to be blamed on Springer if things went south. He's one of the most evil murderers to be shown on Columbo.
@patrickjohnson5658
@patrickjohnson5658 2 жыл бұрын
@@SECRETARIATguy224 Yes I remember that part but two things happened, a rag was left in the cannon and a blank charge was replaced with a highly explosive charge. That says to me he wasn't sure just leaving a rag behind in the gun would be enough, he also had to alter the shell to be sure. How would he try to frame Springer for altering the shell, I wouldn't think Springer had that kind of access to the armoury.
@SECRETARIATguy224
@SECRETARIATguy224 2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickjohnson5658 He either didn't think that far ahead or he did and didn't care. Either way, he had no problem with a kid he knew was totally innocent being charged with murder in order to get away with it himself. Evil.
@patrickjohnson5658
@patrickjohnson5658 2 жыл бұрын
@@SECRETARIATguy224 It only became a murder case after Columbo discovered high explosives had been substituted, before that it was just considered to be an accident by somebody carelessly leaving behind a cleaning rag. Springer would not have got murder charges unless it could be proven he deliberately left the rag behind or altered the shell to make it more powerful. At best he would have got off on a lesser charge. Rumford himself gave the game away to Columbo when he hesitated to identify the cleaning rag straightaway when he was asked, while Springer had no problem identifying it immediately when Columbo asked him.

Just punch in Columbo "Name of episode" internet archive and hopefully you'll still be able to find it. Except for 3 or 4 of them, the 70s ones are fantastic. The later ones fell off in quality a lot--some real turkeys in there--and most of all, Falk started playing the role more as schtick. He was funny when the character didn't know he was a character. Once Columbo was in on the joke, and was constantly hamming up the quirks, it lost a lot. Still they're worth seeing once. If you've never seen it, watch the original made for TV movie from 68: Prescription for Murder. Gene Barry is a great villain, the story's good, and it's interesting seeing the original conception of Columbo in 60s style. He's a little different. my favorite episode. I never knew they fired a live round from such a cannon. I mean, with tip and all. What are they aiming for?

and man, that guy had a hard time remembering about the cider. The killer i mean. He looked at it. He thought about it. Then he walked away from the cannon, and you can still see him struggling to keep in mind the cider. Imagine if he had never spoken about it later on. Just imagine. That kinda actors is worth their money. TO remember to talk about something that will link you to the murder. And actually showing on camera that you have a difficult time to keep this insignificant little detail in your mind. Wonderful Hollywood stuff. They could come up with any story over there and people would believe it.

That music that plays at the end of all these is the same music played at the Emmy's when Falk has just won, but it is NOT Columbo music. Does anyone know what it's from?

Remember watching Colombo back in the day when it was in fresh reruns, and I would wonder why the same guy who murdered somebody last week is murdering somebody else this week. I was seven. It made me distrust people's faces I think. Like you can't rely on thinking that that guy is that guy, because some people just look alike.

I just love the discipline of obeying the Commending Officer and demanding Order of the Officer In Charge. It sounds very descent and trustworthy. I just love to see someone giving me that kind of Command Of 🌟⭐ Law And Justice⭐🌟

No but the Colonel confessed to Colombo. And I don't think that kind of guy would deny it afterward, it would be... dishonorable😞!

I don't really understand, if he saw the cider in the window earlier, why didn't he hold the cadets responsible earlier? Why did he even tell Columbo that he had seen the cider before?

2:39 Costume Department didn't do a very good job on this episode. For an Infantry Captain to have a United Nations Service Medal (for the Korean war), Vietnam Service Medal along with a Vietnam Campaign Medal and no CIB (Combat Infantryman's Badge) really doesn't make much sense. And no awards for valor or meritorious service beyond the National Defense Service Medal on top of his ribbon bar. Loomis's ribbons are identical the bottom 4 on Colonel Rumford's ribbon bar. At least the Colonel appears to have service medals from WW2, Korea and Vietnam which would back up his "perfect attendance" CIB with two stars indicating his third award.

Something's tickling the back of my mind about production companies deliberately making mistakes on uniforms... I'll have to google it, but there was a reason. EDIT: Found it. 10usc772f, an actor may wear the uniform of an armed service if it does not tend to discredit that service. So I'm guessing that the mistakes are intentional so as to provide an 'out' if the DOD didn't appreciate a given plot. It was only a couple years before this season filmed that the supreme court pinged that law for violating the first amendment, but it's still on the books... EDIT EDIT: It could be spoiler material too, if the above isn't wrong and the production company makes a "mistake" in having accurate uniforms for all participants except one; that one could end up the villain and the 'discredit' part comes into play.
