I didn't even know it was a movie soundtrack. I just remember my mom's boyfriend's daughter coming by one evening with this song on a tape, telling them they HAD to hear it and even my mother liked it (even though she doesn't like rap otherwise) and I loved it. :D Had no idea what he was singing about though. My English vocabulary at the time was confined to the alphabet, the numbers, some fruits and animals and "very funny" (or rather, "vewy funny", lol).

Sadly everyone took the exact opposite meaning from the song Coolio was trying to make. He was trying to point out that hood life ruined everyone and they used it as a statement of being hood. He wanted people to wake up and break out of their boundaries that entrapped them in a life that was quite literally killing them. Just like everyone keeps saying to listen to Weird Al's Amish Paradise, but Coolie utterly loathed the song and refused to sign off on it even as parody. He felt the concept of the song was too important to ruin with comedy. And I personally agree with him.

I hope you get 100 million likes on this comment ❤❤❤👊🏻. So many people are still blind to what is happening around us. So many have nothing else to do but hate. As long as we stay devided by our differences of religion, politics, sexism among others we'll never change anything. But I have to believe we still can if we come together. If I stop believing that what's the point of anything! ❤✌👊🏻

the song is a masterpiece of writing, rapping and music. While it spoke to the generation that produced the song and the movie it remains relevant today and that is the power of great music it doesn't matter the Genre the platform it will speak to generations, to people and it will live on well past the time frame that produced it, the song is a perfect example of that power.

“ as I walk through the valley of shadow of death, I take a look at my life an realize there ain’t much left”. True , life isn’t promised . Not easy for many. Sad but true. Mmm this song can make one come back to reality and out of ones own daily life “ bubble “ of daily living where we are our own “ world/ universe “ and shows us that other ppl do still exist that there is a reality where ppl exist other than in our own lives. That bad things can and are still happening in a day to day basis weather it involves us or not... we get consumed in our own world and forget that others still exist and sometimes misery, mishaps, accidents and life threatening situations still happen and may cross in each other’s path, causing turmoil, death, pain and makes us wake up and connect to reality, the facts that things happen, that life is short/fleeting and at times painful. but we are not alone we can extend a hand to each other... though the song is sad it makes me feel strong instead.

This was my first hip hop cd. I was 10 years old. Lived with my dad up to that point before he sent me to live with my mom. She had started dating all black guys after my dad. She was with this guy who had just got out of prison for 10 years. When I was older he explained to me he was og blood. I don't have any experience with gangs or being in one but it was pretty surreal going to the club with him years later and having dudes come up to him every other song buying him drinks and shit and just showing respect. I guess he was somebody to them. I mean he was to me too but not on that level. Anyway, rewind. I was 10 years old, mom was visiting with friends (getting high) I was little white boy walking to the basketball court at the gov. housing with some of the other kids that lived in the apt she was going to (kids know to get out the house when shit like that's going on) and I fell behind for some reason. Can't remember. But I do remember looking down and finding this cd on the ground. Most of the cd didn't work because it was scratched so badly but this song played perfectly because I listened to it over and over and over again. I loved this song. My ears weren't trained enough to listen to that fast paced of lyrics yet. All my dad listened to was country and rock so rap was a new league. But even tho I couldn't tell what he was saying it spoke to me. I can't wait to play this song, amongst many others, for my children.

This is one of the most abused and misused songs I've ever heard. This isn't a song about promoting gang life, either real or the insincere version in pop culture. It's a testimony to how messed up it is, how hard it is to learn anything else growing up in it, and the damage it does both to self and community. It's also partnered with a movie that admittedly has some white savior going on but also humanized kids in inner city schools and tried to show that they aren't the lost causes everyone writes them off as. It's one of the few songs that I get pissed off about when someone sings along happily to it. Thank you for listening to the lyrics.

Your quote: “In order to get better you gotta listen, soak shit up.” That’s just genius! Seriously! That’s the way I try everyday to live my life... my philosophy... try to go into someone else’s world and understand where they are coming from and by being so open minded to appreciate all this awesome music you are listening to you are inspiring others to LISTEN to one another and do the same. THANK YOU!!!

It's weird, listening to this song now hits much different than back then. The rap I listened to was the earliest days of Three Six Mafia, Trina, of course Ice Cube and Snoop and Dr. Dre, etc and before that N.W.A and so on. So I remember this song being much softer than it actually is, I guess versus the rest of what I was listening to. This is a REALLY good song.

I loved this song since I was a kid. 29 now.. I remember playing this in my truck when I was 18 to show a friend (RIP) my sub system. Felt a kinda embarrassed playing it for him at the time, because I didn't know or have much rap, and figured that this song was probably something a casual out-of-date rap fan would be thumping. This and "Dear Momma" by Tupac. Lol Still love this song and that bass line that's playing through the verses.

Your are such an entertaining KZfaqr, dude. Never change, you really make me smile, man. Nothing better than kicking back with a few drinks and your videos at the end of the week. Please consider this song - Glen Hansard, Bird of Sorrow. It's written from the perspective of a little boy telling his mom to stay strong after she's been through a lot in life and it is really beautiful. You have to get into Jeff Buckley too, such a gifted singer. I suggest the song Grace as a good starter. It shares the name of his first, and only album.
