It was a love song mostly written by Gwen's brother and was more upbeat. When the bass player broke up with her, Gwen rewrote most of the lyrics to make it a sad song. It had a long incubation process both lyrically and musically.

Gwen was such a breath of fresh air to the sweaty, leather, grunge-funk that was pervading rock when No Doubt released Tragic Kingdom in October of '95. "Just a Girl", "Spiderwebs", "Sunday Morning", "Hey You", "Excuse Me Mister". Such a good album. Sixteen million copies sold to date.

Originally her brother was in the band and he dragged her out to sing. She had no self confidence. Eventually the brother left the band to be an artist at Walt Disney World. A reluctant singer becomes a star and and figures out her own style. How to dress, how to dance, how to be comfortable in her own body. Just a girl next door. In a garage. I was like 11 years old when Tragic Kingdom was released in 1995. No Doubt was huge back then. This song is basically about the end of her relationship with their bassist, Tony Kanal. And, they addressed her getting the majority of the attention in this video. She was with Gavin Rossdale of BUSH forever before Blake Shelton. I saw both No Doubt and BUSH (with a ton of other groups) at Rockfest '97 at the Texas Motor Speedway. It was hot as balls, they were havin to hose the crowd down to try and keep people from overheatin, and over 100,000 people were present. Dennis Rodman walked in front of us and everyone lost their minds (again, it was 1997). Good times! 💖🌠💖

I saw them in 1997 at The Gorge Amphitheater. It was the tour for this album (Tragic Kingdom), Weezer was the opening band. I think it was their first tour as the headliner. And I’m pretty sure they were just coming off their gig opening for Bush, where she met and started dating Gavin. It It was a great show! Often, when you see a young, new band, they are so raw and hungry, and they deliver an energy that tends to diminish over the years (aside from AC/DC). Gwen was climbing the scaffolding on the sides of the stage. She was 20/30 feet high, hanging on with on hand, holding the microphone with the other, as she sang. My buddy was working security and Gwen actually noticed how many people he was pulling out of the front of the crowd and requested he be brought backstage so she could thank him.

Gwen is my ultimate girl crush! Saw them at the HFSTival at RFK Stadium in DC. If you have ever been to RFK it shook in the lower seats. No Doubt ROCKED! Her best music was in No Doubt. SKA in the early 90s. Amazing. There is nothing like Gwen.

Oh man, I went to X Fest in Somerset Wisconsin in 96, at what I consider the height of Gwen's career! She climbed the scaffolding 50 feet up during "Spider Web", then the next band up was Korn, who I didn't really know until then. I left that concert with a solid boot print in my forehead from the mosh pit! Top 5 shows of my life! 😜 Gwen was at her best with No Doubt

GWEN STEFANI WAS THE SHIT BACK IN THE DAY!!!!! Both in No Doubt and when she went solo. Possibly one of the most energetic stage performers, she could actually sing, gave GREAT music .... and drop dead gorgeous. Spiderwebs, I'm Just A Girl, Hollaback Girl, What You For Waiting For, Rich Girl, Blow Your Mind (collaboration with Eve).

I remember first seeing NO DOUBT on the MTV Spring Break Special when I was a young teen. I distinctly remember I was vacuuming the living room with the show on in the background. I immediately stopped and listened to them play JUST A GIRL. I was forever hooked. They had a very Fleetwood Mac band dynamic with Gwen writing about her relationship ending with her band mate.
