Valkyrae kept having its music play in the background of animations, actually. And another KZfaqr even uses the old music from New Leaf City in his outro. (The music reminding me of it is actually the main reason I returned to it.) So it's been back in circulation for _awhile,_ shockingly enough.

Stop making me feel old. I played Maplestory through out middle and high school. Got rich in the game and put it down. I do miss the fun boss spawns and events. Good times.

The classes all have their own identities, it's actually one of the rare things MS is very good at. Like, several classes have a backstep skill (Corsair, Cannoneer, Shade, Night Walker, and Adele assuming I'm not forgetting to mention any) and all 5 of them function completely differently from each other. No class has a skill that functions quite like Hero's Flash Cut or Wind Archer's Wind Walk. There are some similarities (Thunder Breaker, Demon Avenger, and Shadower all have a skill that teleports them directly to an enemy), but even if like one movement skill is the same, the rest of their kits feel and play so differently that it's pretty ridiculous to just sorta say that they "got rid of all class identity." I wouldn't say MS is 50% a platformer. The parts that are explicitly supposed to be about platforming have always been sequestered away in their own areas with their own movement restrictions. I do get what you're getting at there though, the implementation of a bunch of free teleports make it a lot easier to get around the map, which mean the old school transportation systems like the ships are obsolete and feel more like an obstacle than anything, especially since not needing to use them means no one else is there, so it's just kind of lonely. I blame Hyper Teleport Rocks, they figured out they could sell you the ability to teleport anywhere, which created this feedback loop where now the old form of transportation is lonely and boring so you're incentivized to buy the new one, furthering the problem. You're mostly right about the lack of incentive to play together. Training is slower with other people there, you're incentivized to try and kill bosses with as few party members as possible for higher rewards, and party quests are obsolete. There are a few exceptions though. Gollux has no downside to bringing multiple people along, so people will generally carry friends/guild members/alliance members. Monster Park Extreme is a lot faster with a full party and also has no downside to bringing others along, so people will generally try to do that together. Higher tier bosses will also generally be done in a party, at least until the members are able to solo for more rewards, but it generally takes people a long time to get to that point, especially with stronger bosses like Tenebris bosses, so you can usually get some of that good human interaction that way. I guess there's also the instanced training maps in the endgame lvl 260+ areas, though that only applies to Reboot servers since it was a negative change for Regular servers, so it got reverted and they're the same as other maps. In those maps, Reboot players can train together without stealing each other's kills. And for the last thing, yeah you're right on the money, the gacha stuff's super predatory.

@@NotAnElk yeah okay, maybe 50% is exaggurated. Most maps are just 2 columns of 3 rows of platforms. I miss maps like L forest which were hard to manoeuvre. Or the Golem pit between Henesys and Sleepy Wood. It doesn't give any exp, but traversal was part of the adventure. Same for finding hidden street maps. I think the class identity is still an issue. You don't need a thief for haste or a spearman for hyper body. And anyone can hit jr. Nekky's now. All classes are about as powerful and work well on their own. They have different themes and some have interesting mechanics like MP replacing bars. But you never really need someone else. There is a theory about different types of players. Modern maple story is for Achievers. Where before it was for Socializers and Explorers. I liked the cartoony world to explore and talk to strangers. Instead of of get told to CC for KS and awe at their rare equips they spend thousands of thru gachapon.

On some level I think the game's current direction was inevitable. I don't necessarily think the idea of partying up with someone just for a class skill they have is better than partying up with someone because they've put a lot of time and effort into their character. You also party up for different reasons these days, and most classes are expected to be able to hold their own, even if they are a support class. And yeah you're definitely right that exploration isn't really a part of the game anymore. Early game maps are still around but are kind of streamlined and without any reason to go to them, no one does, so exploration is lonely, and there's a sense that you're just kinda wasting your time and will need to get back to the grind sooner or later. Meanwhile late game maps are "Map Name 1, Map name 2" etc. I think at its core, the thing that's changed in MS is that you're always supposed to be Doing Something these days. You used to get on and just sorta hang out, go explore, talk to your bl. Now that the game's full of events all the time, dailies, weeklies, and fomo, you get on, do your stuff, then log off. Not that people don't hang around and talk with friends, but they generally do so in BL or Guild chats. The MS Subreddit often has posts from old returning players frustrated that they can't find anyone to talk to. They always get told to join a guild, which does sometimes fix the issue for them, but I think a lot of the time what they're looking for is the old school MS experience, and that experience is just kind of gone. It's partially just things changing over time, the game wouldn't still be around if they never changed it, but I think it's partially that Nexon realized they could make more money if everyone was striving to be stronger and therefore willing to spend money on cubes/marvel/philos/wonderberry. I still have a good time with the game, but it's a very different experience than it was when I started, and I think going into it expecting it to be the same as it was when you were a kid is a recipe for disappointment. Also Nexon's an awful company, god I hate them so much.
