Hi-Ho Silver, AWAY!
Do you want to ride into battle, your mighty steed rearing and your coat of arms flying as you steady your lance for an epic charge? Cavaliers are the mounted fighters of 5e Dungeons & Dragons, excelling at combat on horseback (or camelback, or giant toad back Etc.) taking advantage of enhanced mobility and focusing enemy attention on themselves as a tank. But cavaliers are a bit of a black sheep among martial builds, with features that take a bit of work to really take advantage of. Get into the fighting spirit, shine up your armor, and clean out the stables as we go through everything you need to know.

I strongly suggest taking the Tough and Heavy Armor Master Feats. If you're gonna tank, might as well do it with piles of HP and the feature that allows you to shrug small amounts of the most common damage types.

Sadly, HAM goes almost entirely away when the enemy starts employing magical weapons (at least to my experience using it, it keeps your ass alive in t1 and then gradually loses relevance)

About 100 creatures total have printed magical attacks and weapons. Out of over 2000. DMs can run games however they want but magical attacks are a rare thing regardless of level and tier unless the DM makes it a priority for some reason.

Making a kobold cavalier who doesn’t exactly ride a mount, I’ll make his strength and athletics high enough to reliably climb larger creatures and start attacking them from their backs and use a whip to hit enemies that may try to bypass me and my unwilling mount. He’s a little folkhero don quixote, brave but very poor with rusty equipment, a pick modified for battle, and a large shield that he strapped to his back because he can’t hold it properly. In place of a helm he has a big iron pot

I think there may be one overlooked thing about the Unwavering Mark Feature. The 5ft part only applied to the Disadvantage on attack against anyone other than you. The following part is separate and thusly quite effective for a Mounted Cavalier. For starters, you ride up to the enemy, strike at it and mark it, then have your mount Disengage as you ride away. Being out of that enemies reach, it will likely go attack someone else. Now on your next turn you can ride back over to them, attack them, and Bonus Mark attack them with Advantage and extra damage. Now, only thing I don't alike about this feature, and this goes for Warding Maneuver as well, is that you can only perform them a number of times equal to there respective Ability Mods per Long Rest. This just feels a little to limiting and think they should have added Short Rest as well.

13:54 Great Weapon Fighting doesn't work with the lance, because it doesn't have the two-handed property. Dueling however works when on horseback. The Great Weapon Master feat also doesn't work with the lance.

You know what also works with Lances, especially when mounted? The Two Weapon Fighting Style and Dual Wielder Feat. How so? Lances count as 1-handed weapons when mounted, Dual Wielder Feat allows you to wield two 1-handed weapons even if neither are Light. And thus you have... "The Dual-Lance Cavalier"! Of course for this to work properly, you'll have to leave your Lances on your mount and can only wield them both at once while on said mount. So, would be ideal to being a second pair for on-foot combat.

Okay, i just thought to look this up cause i'm currently in a Rime campaign playing an orc beastmaster/cavalier. For plot reasons, i use the Tasha's rules but my beast is an Owlbear, with actual stats. I see what you're saying about style cause i go sword and board since i essentially see Mr. Peppers(my owlbear) as an additional tank. I use him to tank one group while i handle the other. Cause i use an axe one of my party said i was pretty much Paul Bunyan🤣

Sidestepping the whole mounted combat issue, I'm working on a centaur cavalier. Backstory is he's a farmboy who dreams of being a knight. We'll start off with a pitchfork [trident] and a shield before working his way up through polearm master with a spear [to keep enemies within 5'.]

I suggest asking your DM if UA feats are ok and picking up the Spear Mastery feat! It makes spears more viable to use, going from d6 one handed to d8, giving it an extra +1 to hit, and some cool abilities to use with the spear like bracing or gaining extra reach if you need it. It’s not that broken and I’m about to start using it in a game for my cavalier lol.

Concerning the 5ft distance problem with the lance: you could just ride an elephant or something like that, which makes it imposible for most creatures to be directly adjacent to you. They only can attack the mount than and your priority is to boost up your mounts tank ability. With the Mounted Combat feet you still have advantage on all attack rolls. That's not bad. Also with unwavering mark they always have disadvantage against your mount. You literally always have the high ground. Obi Wan would be proud of you.
@crownlexicon5225
@crownlexicon5225 Жыл бұрын
For unwavering mark, the enemy MUST be within 5' of you. So if your unwavering mark is working, you're likely attacking with disadvantage with your lance (unless you have some sort of advantage making it a neutral roll)

I loved my cavalier build for Descent to Avernus! Our DM was amazing for it as well! Here was my build and equipment by the time we went to Avernus! Inventory: Plate Armor, Shield of the Hidden Lord (+2), Bead of Nourishment(for the Horse), a Lance made of Adamantine (very effective later on for spoiler reasons), Longsword of Wounding, Leather Lance Holster/Bucket attached to saddle (Leatherworking Tool Proficiency - allowed swapping to my lance with 2 free actions rather than interacting with the backpack) My mount was a Warhorse with Plate Barding Race: Human Variant - Feat: Mounted Combatant Fighting style: Dueling (helps when I use a lance one handed on horseback, or using the longsword with a shield) Cavalier Martial Archetype Lvl 4 Feat: Shield Master - shield master shove is great for a bonus action while mounted as you can shove them away, or shove them prone. Best is dex saves vs fireballs and such using your reaction to take no damage. Nice when your horse takes no damage from Mounted Combatant. Lvl 6 Feat: Martial Adept - Maneuvering Attack (Great to move your mount after you attack) and Lunging Attack (nice bit of range on a lance) Lvl 8 Feat: Fighting Initiate - Superior Technique (+1 superiority die) - Menacing Attack (Can cause them to be afraid giving them disadvantage vs you, and depending on your placement and your friends, keep them from moving directly towards your friends). Lvl 12 Feat: Piercer (+1 DEX) Crits with piercing damage roll an additional dice. You can reroll the result of your piercing attacks. I had a lot of fun playing the character and running around the hells on horseback! I definitely think you need to run with a Cleric who can revivify your horse (or bring more horses or a druid) but definitely a blast to play!

Turn the mount into a sidekick, using the warrior stats from Tasha's. Use the Defender Martial Role to protect you and second wind to help keep it alive. The mount gains levels as well, allowing it to take feats to help it out, like Tough or Resilient. Makes your mount quite a bit more survivable in the long run.

I recently hit level 8 and my cavalier's long search for a mount has come to and end. Traditonal mounts are scared of him due to being a lycanthrope. I was given a Wyvern. Wavering Mark and Mounted Combatant Feat makes me quite formidable. I am looking into getting an item comissioned that has a summon steed spell (next dawn recharge) for areas my Wyvern cannot follow me.

Drakewarden Ranger or Beast Master Ranger (with all the Tasha's options, they are objectively more useful) make pretty good mounted fighters. The Beast Master works best for Small races (has to be the Beast of the Land version), while the Drakewarden can't ride their Drake until 7th level, even though it loses its flying speed when you do, then at 15th level, it grows to Large and can fly with you mounted on it. With either option, you command the creature to Attack, etc. with your Bonus Action, leaving you free to attack elsewhere with your Action, especially if you've got the Crossbow Expert feat to prevent disadvantage while making Ranged attacks within 5 feet of an enemy.

People always play cavalier wrong. You move up on horseback to ten ft, lance them, then mark them. They either run and you get your extra attacks, or they try to engage you. If they do engage you, your mount can just disengage and you can keep slapping them with lance attacks until they die. You become a very annoying wasp they have to deal with, or youll simply obliterate them

As an older gamer, I lost a bit of interest at the mention of "tanks" and "builds," but I will say that they put some thought into the class aside from "mounted person.. riding a mount." The character has a bonafide "defender" capability. Just.. please stop saying "tank." The MMORPG mindset is what made 4th edition hot garbage. There is no "aggro." Intelligent monsters and NPCs might very well ignore the "tank" to take out his/her allies and then swarm him. Min/maxing attribute scores also means someone will avoid playing certain classes if they can't get the best "build" possible, which is contrary to the roleplaying experience. A cavalier with Wisdom or other save stat as a "dump stat" could be taken out more easily with spells that target those stats. Just food for thought from a RPG dinosaur.
@Darthvegeta8000
@Darthvegeta8000 Жыл бұрын
I'm also an rp dinosaur and these videogame rpg terms are just fine. There was nothing wrong with 4th in itself. It was the laid back casual rp. 3.0-3.5 was the crunchy one. 5th is the in between. Plenty of flavors and styles out there.
@Oznerock
@Oznerock 9 ай бұрын
Yes... There's no "aggro" in these games (there is but it's based on what is intelligent to do or what the creature would do) - except the cavalier can make sure people are targeting him by hitting him.
