Really enjoyed this video, would you happen to know, for cavalry when were burgonets replaced by lobster pots?
@discoverhistory7818
@discoverhistory7818 2 жыл бұрын
There's no definite date I'm afraid. By the 17th Century the Lobster pot seems standard. However some Scottish units are shown wearing earlier styles such as Burgonets.

When you say 'mounted' troops, do you mean horses? It all looks awfully dangerous. I'd like to see more of Discover History, it is ace. I have subscribed to your channel for this very reason. I have thumbed-up you too.

Hi, the left armed gauntlets, the one used by the cavalry. Was it to block blows?
@discoverhistory7818
@discoverhistory7818 6 ай бұрын
Richard Harris used it for this, in the film, Cromwell. However, it seems to have been just to protect the arm, not moving much. After all the reins were held in this arm, when weapons were used in the right hand.

What would the typical arms of a cavalryman have been? Was it common to carry more than two pistols? How unusual would a double-barreled pistol have been? What was the typical cavalry sword?
@discoverhistory7818
@discoverhistory7818 2 жыл бұрын
The Cavalry are often listed as having a pair of Pistols and a sword. The sword was the main weapon by the time of the English Civil Wars. Some also carried a Carbine. Paul has made a video on the Carbine. He is yet to make one on the Cavalry Sword and Pistols. A future video for sure.

@@discoverhistory7818 Hi, many thanks for all your help. I’m going to contact Adam to see if he can make me a lobster pot three bar helmet like the one you displayed in your video! After watching several of his videos I am now absolutely transfixed with this period of history and I’m learning so much about the armour process, that in itself is completely fascinating 🧐 I can’t thank you enough as I naïvely bought a Cromwellian parliamentary cavalry helmet on eBay which on arrival I instantly regretted, this is what happens when you don’t do your proper research.

Funny enough they could have wore 2 more layers of these things riveted together with hardened leather inbetween and a extra gambeson and jerkin underneath. I mean the horse was doing all the work in carrying the weight and they would never need to be on foot for more than 11 minuets. I wouldn't want to be the one trying to afford that though.

@@discoverhistory7818 approximately 100 meters for armour rated as pistol proof at 7 meters. So a fit pike man could sprint from safe and into melee with in the 20 seconds it'd take a musketeer to reload. A Cavalry man could do it in less
