Here I demonstrate how to replace the pesky 90's CB750 valve cover gasket. You may start seeing oil seeping around this gasket and if it's not taken care of soon, the oil will begin to burn unto your pretty engine, causing discoloration. Be sure to stick to the end when I give one of the most important tips.

Followed procedure in the Clymer manual 1st time I replaced the gasket at about 30 or 40K. Now has 135,000 mi and in need of replacement, so I guess I'll follow what worked for me the first time. Nice to see the procedure actually done without relying on fuzzy black and white photos in the Clymer.. Thanks for the vid.

Thank you for posting this helpful video. Did this job successfully on my 1997 CBSevenFifty (Australia spec) last night. I watched this months ago and gradually got all the gear together to do the job. I followed your advice all the way, used Honda gaskets, Hondabond HT, and carefully cleaned the mating surfaces. It was a cold night last night and the sealer was nice and tacky which help locate the gasket in the correct position to drop on the valve cover. Thanks again 👍🏻👍🏻

Im in automotive industry and our teachings are a bit diffrent. We also are taught to only put gasket sealant on 90 degree edges also not half circles. Rtv gasket sealant being applied to the metal surface that already has rubber formed ridge will release the vaccume that the gasket creates. Its all good man diffrent strokes for diffrent folks lol. I was hesitant to work on it since I'm not too familiar with the mechanics of a motorcycle but with your videos and a free owners manual I found online (SCORE!) I'm ready! Haha, changed the plugs, I think I'll clean the carbs next since it still has issues starting if the choke isn't on. But I noticed some oil leaking by the half Moon area of the gasket so this video is PERFECT! I'd buy ya a beer if I could!

The shop manual says to put the gasket on the valve cover before putting it back in. As long as you use something that will make the gasket adhere to the cover for about 30 seconds, that is easier I think than the way you did it.

I did this job twice now, following this video -- first time, it still leaked (I used a super thin smear of honda bond, and I think under-tightened the bolts. Also, I didn't replace the rubber half-moons). This time, I used more hondabond and replaced the half-moons -- I'm scared that I used too much. How concerned should I be about a tiny bit of squeeze-out when I tightened the cover back on -- I'm afraid to start it back up and get hondabond flakes in the oil passages :( but I think I'm over-worrying.

Permatex makes a great product. Just be sure it is a High-temp silicon. If they have a High-temp that is oil resistant than that's even better! You are not using too much of it so any high-temp will serve its purpose.

Anyway, manual says to use gascanich on the top of the gasket so I am curious why you did not do that? Also, it is apparent that slipping the cover in with the gasket installed could be a chore. I may do it the opposite as well. Thanks for the vid.

@TheMotorcycleMD

Bryan Stocklas Green Scotch-bright scrub pads work great, if you use sandpaper just don't go crazy with the grit. Use a paper that won't put gouges in the mating surface and work is smooth.

Hey Cody! It's been over a year since I did this on my 1991 Nighthawk 750 (see my comments from 2017) and still no leaks. Thanks again! Recently I was getting some backfiring and decreased gas mileage so i ran some Seafoam for about 20 minutes. Engine got very hot. I revved engine a few times and suddenly it started making a loud tapping noise, seems to be coming from exhaust valve. Immediately shut engine off and let cool overnight. Next day started and noise remains. Any ideas?
@mattfoley6082
@mattfoley6082 6 жыл бұрын
I removed valve cover and ran engine a few seconds and noise is definitely coming from #2 cylinder's exhaust tappet area. I can't think what else in that location would cause the noise other than bad tappet, can you?
@mattfoley6082
@mattfoley6082 6 жыл бұрын
Update: Upon closer examination I see that one of the exhaust valves on the #1 cylinder is stuck open. (The rocker is not on the cam lobe but I can see about an 1/8" gap between the rocker and the cam, and the valve stem is lower than the others.) I'm confused because the noise was coming from the #2 valve area. So now I think the #2 tappets are ok but the #1 valve is stuck open. Any tips on unsticking the valve without going through hassle of disassembling engine to get at valve? I would think the Seafoam would've cleaned everything and made things less sticky, not more sticky.
@mattfoley6082
@mattfoley6082 6 жыл бұрын
To clarify, the valve still opens when cam lobe pushes on the rocker but does not close all the way. So the valve does move.

Many thanks for posting this. My 1991 Nighthawk 750 with 29k miles just started leaking even though I keep in garage year round and ride year round. A few questions if you don't mind. 1. Should you disconnect battery before disconnecting coils? 2. Video doesn't show you applying Hondabond HT on half moons like you said you would. Did you? 3. 15:08 you say to apply "RTV" to hold gasket down. Did you mean to say Hondabond HT? 4. Total time from start to finish? 5. Total cost of parts?
@TheMotorcycleMD
@TheMotorcycleMD 7 жыл бұрын
1. I did not disconnect the battery because you are not disconnecting any constant hot wires to accidentally ground to do this job. 2. At 13.42 if you look at the video there is sealant on the "half moons" like I said I would do. I just didn't see the purpose of showing you how I applied the Hondabond. 3. Hondabond HT is what I use for everything that requires it's application. Any HIGH TEMP RTV will give you the same results and is almost exactly the same thing but hondabond being more expensive, you can go with what ever you can afford just so long as it is resistant to high heat temperatures. 4. For me it takes about a solid hour. 5. Total cost for gasket and sealing washers is about 95$ with whichever Hightemp sealant you choose.

Just did mine. Took me 2 hrs 50 minutes. I removed the ignition coils (2 bolts) and hung them and their attached plug wires toward the front to maximize room above the valve cover. Cleaning the gasket channel in the cover took about an hour because I'd clean, rinse and see spots I'd missed. I used a small screwdriver to scrape it out. I had to put RTV in the gasket channel to keep the new gasket from falling out when maneuvering cover back into place. Auto supply stores carry only red RTV for $8. It almost matches my red Nighthawk. ;-) RTV says wait 24 hours before running engine. Fingers crossed. (Update from next day: I took bike for a long ride. Success! No more leak!) I bought new gasket and 8 washers online for $65 + $14 shipping. www.hondapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/hon/506cac12f870023420a403fd/cylinder-head-cover

6:00 Those allen sockets make hex head removal so much easier than standard allen wrenches. You get more bite and more torque. Harbor Freight sells them. They are worth having.

I have a 1984 Honda Nighthawk 700s. I have had no luck in finding a cylinder head cover gasket for this bike. The one that you just replaced looks like it would work on my bike. Is there any difference? Is there an aftermarket gasket that you recommend if one exists? My bike is in great shape and I want to keep it that way. Any advice is appreciated.

The gasket I replaced is actually a valve cover gasket. A cylinder head gasket is a whole different animal. They are not interchangeable as far as know. That’s the issue with bikes that old! Finding parts you need!

Got it. Sorry for the mix up. It is the head cover gasket that I was asking about, the one that has the half moon tabs. Do you know where I can find a new one? The original one that I have is in good shape and I have already reinstalled it after I cleaned and polished the head cover. I followed you directions so wish me luck.

Get the part number for your model. Look at newer models parts numbers. Chances are they might be the same. This bikes was produced for many years with minor changes.
