someone needs to start a course where students just bring in their engine and everyone goes through the entire thing. You'd make a great teacher! Keep it up!

love it i took my motor apart 6 months ago and watched this video several times for a reminder on how to put back together. a couple of key parts left out but im sure you will have a book if you plan on going this far with your motor. but i still watch this video as i am in the middle of putting mine back together. thanks

I have never put tension on a cam chain to keep it from coming off of the lower sprocket. When you take the valves out, use a magnet to pull the keepers off. It doesn't matter which order you take the valves out as long as you keep the intake and exhaust separate. If you lap them like you did you don't have to keep them in order. When you lap the valves after a few seconds, push them away from the seat, then turn the valve 180% degrees, then reseat them then lap them some more. I use a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the valve seals. I use an egg container to put the cam caps and related parts in to keep them in order. Good job on the rebuild.

Thanks for the video. You have shown me what I will end up doing on my CB550.. 20,000 miles, compression is 120, 110, 110, 90.. Leaks oil. I'm fairly certain this will work.

you have been really great answering the questions i asked. if i could get away with just one more, in one of ur videos u mention that a person can download the factory service manual but i cant quite hear/understand where u say to go do that. i bought a "clymers" (just about useless) so if i could find out how to download the factory manual i would be set. thanks again for ur time. p.s. i really do like the videos u share.

Just a tip, always put a rag in the engine case below the pistons, this will prevent them moving about and damaging themselves on the case and, more importantly, prevent bits of ring falling into the case.

Should have also honed the cylinders also, remove the glaze and help the rings seal more evenly.

similar process for a 79 cb650? my first ever bike that I am building. It never run when I got it and I have no mechanical experience. It now runs but pretty sure it needs new gaskets and maybe piston rings?? Has low compression on #2 and #3 as well as oil leaks around the head.

Good video. Couple of things that weren't really outlined in the video that are typical questions... Which way do the rings go? Which one is top ring? WHat offset do you use on the rings? On the head... should use thread sealer on the 4 bolts that hold down the cam towers. These threads go through to the fins and can cause pesky oil leaks. On the cam... Did not show that the cam must be properly aligned with the crank. Good show! Thanks for putting that together. Imabass

Fellas....you can drop the cam chain in the tunnel.....pick it up with a magnet. All the gyrations to keep it taut are completely unnecessary. There are other things too but I don't have the time.

Thanks for the video. I have a 76 CB550 Super Sport that needs similar treatment. May try to tackle it with a buddy. My dad was a service center supervisor for Honda in the 70s. He always said not to use any sealer on original OEM honda gaskets. Is the coppercoat necessary? That may have been the Honda wisdom in the 70s. Maybe now it is recommended.

I had the cylinder head on my 73 CB750 rebuild and I installed it. I have an issue know where I have oil coming out the breather hose from the rocker cover breather hose and from the breather hose on the oil tank at high rpm. I also have white smoke coming out the breather hose on the rocker cover. One other think noticed is that if I pull the plug wires when running 1, 3, and 4 will cause the engine to stumble but if I pull number 2 plug wire, nothing happens. Any thoughts?

hello again. i appreciate the return of my question so thot maybe i could get another one answered. my 750 was advertised and shows 13k mi. with no info about the non-running engine except it was not locked up. so for my peace of mind. if after pulling the head and combustion chamber looks good, would it be ok to just "re-lap" the valves? cuz i noticed "lucky" said something bout a special valve seat cutting tool. thx again for ur time

This video is badass. I'm rebulding my 78' cb750f. Can you just run a list of the most important things when putting it all back together? That some newbies (myself) would over look?? I have the honda shop manual, but its different when you have an experienced guy with tips from years of doing this.

this was very entertaining and educational I never would of thought jim beam was requirement to get it done ill remember that does it have to be jim beam or could I use vodka as a substitute ?
@DocBlasto

+Matt Man Vodka not only works, but is recommended, if you're rebuilding a Ural. Sake is generally recommended if you're rebuilding a Honda, but Beam is more readily available in the States.

These guys know their stuff but they left out all of the cam tower info. It's very important that the oil control jets a passageways are clear. Also if you put the chain on first then the sprocket it's a lot easier to get the chain on, especially if you've upgraded the chain.
