As a cashier and self checkout attendant, I’ll say that people do come with a full cart of groceries sometimes. I’ll just tell them before they even scan a single item, “it would be quicker through a register if you want”. It’s as simple as doing all of the work yourself versus having an experienced cashier and bagger do it. If you have like two items sure go ahead, otherwise go on register.

Where i live, there are (unfortunately) 2 stores where the staffed checkouts are closed during quieter times One is a smaller store (with 6 or 7 self checkouts, and only 1 or 2 staffed checkouts), one is a larger store with only 2 staffed checkouts, and i think 8 total self checkouts (4 normal size, and 4 which are designed for larger shops) And there is one store which i am certain reduced the number of staffed checkouts in favour of more self checkouts (they used to have a total of 5 large shop self checkouts i think, but they now have 10 large shop self checkouts)

It depends on the lines and employees. At the Kroger I grocery shop at, unless you have a BIG cart of items, the self-checkout is quicker and normally there is NO line. Unlike the regular checkouts.

As long as you have cashiers your prices won't come down. Unfortunately in a cash society cashiers still have a place. Now, in the future, where people start to go cashless, having purely self checkouts will be the way to go. And it's not rocket science. Just scan your items and pay with your card. How hard is that?

Sample size of n=2 and a trolley of items including veggies for which you have to put a code in, just to prove a point.. Self-service checkouts are faster for most people, because most people who use them only have a basket full at most and don't want to wait around behind 4 people with full trolleys at the cashier. If they repeated the test with only 3 items each, all of which have bar codes and included the waiting time in the queue, then they would see a very different result.

I love self checkout, I don't understand why there would be an attendant for a gas station- maybe that's because I grew up with it. Refilling your drink is just convenient, automated tickets are extremely convenient, assembling your furniture is a pain but then again, IT'S OPTIONAL! If you buy the cheap furniture, you assemble it yourself or you can go to a furniture store and buy high quality furniture pre-assembled for a much higher price. The benefits are there, you just have to look for them.

If people have certain disabilities, I can see having a full service option. I remember once when my back went out on me 15 years ago being grateful for the one remaining gas station with an attendant who pumped. One less time to have to get out and in to the car in extreme pain before getting to the doctor. Mind you, all the other times I've been fine pumping my own gas.

I love self service, if I could fly the airplane myself I'd do it. Also this report is very biased and has a wrong perspective on it. It's not so much about more profits as it is about company survival and competitivity. If my competitor is using technology to lower operating costs well he may put me out of business, so I have to get on board. Also If costs go down, prices for consumer will probably go down, it's not like the company just gets a bigger margin, it needs to stay competitive. So you see for a company it is mostly a necessity to implement these things, not so much an "evil scheme to put you to work" as is portrayed in this video.

We provide fully automated and highly convenient self-ordering kiosks for restaurants, groceries and retail outlets that work on a "grab and go" basis. The customer needs to place the item on the kiosk weighing scale, and wait for few seconds. The AI camera of the kiosk detects the item and issues the bill. This avoids the barcode confusion.

I don't know about you guys, but over here in sweden, the self-checkout solution in supermarkets is really awesome and way more efficient than those shown in the video. Instead of standing there afterward and scanning each product like a cashier, you scan your products and put them in your bag as you go through the store with a handheld scanner registered to your customer ID. Then at the end, you pay and you go without ever having to stand in line and wait. The difference, of course, is that you have to be a registered customer.

Believe me, I was a cashier for years. Often times grocery stores make their cashiers scan a certain amount of "items per minute". This in turn forces the cashier to go as fast as they can, in order to keep up with what is being demanded of them. Which means, they bag however they want, whichever is easiest, and fastest. I had raises kept from me, just because I didn't work as fast as everyone else. But, I also had customers specifically come to my register, because they liked how I bagged their groceries. So I do understand your point about how your groceries are bagged. My attitude was always that, the customers are paying good money, they shouldn't have their items destroyed because of some lousy bagging. Just know that if the cashier seems to be going very quickly, it's probably because she/he is being pressured to do so by management...

For many introverts, self-checkouts are more of a non-social alternate option for them. It comes down with what is most comfortable for them. As for some other people, it’s not so much the problem of getting an adrenaline rush from interacting with strangers but more so in regards to privacy. With self-checkouts, a shopper can go through that process without having to be self-conscious about what they’re buying. I feel like even if they are fully aware that self-checkouts can take longer, they would most likely still continue to use that option.

It's actually good for when the store is mostly empty too, often times I've went to stores and there was only one cashier open, but a line had formed because it suddenly got busy, so either you had to wait in line behind 8 people or hope the one cashier calls to the back and asks for another cashier to come to the register or hope one of the employees notice the line and goes and runs the cash register. It would be nice when I came to a store in this situation I could just go to cash register in the other row and self checkout my own stuff, instead of waiting.

Huh. Perhaps this depends on the type of store you worked at. Walmarts for example seem to have endless lines of people. I don't think a customer would prioritize you making your quota though to go to you....that's a warped type of logic there. In school I was a cashier at a hardware store and this was never the case. They just needed you at cash and available, or facing cleaning the storefront when you had downtime. The cashier lines are almost always backlogged with shoppers and there's always that old lady with 100 coupons and obscure items that need to be price checked. I am a millennial (in my early 20's) and I love self-serving services. It helps me know the system in how something works, I can work at my own pace, and also helps the line go faster if there are self-serving people and people being served at the counter. Especially those ticket counters at airports! They go so much faster now because if you don't have any check-in luggage you don't even have to wait in a line to get your ticket! You can just print it out beforehand and be on your way. I just personally think a lot of people hate self-serving technology because they hate how they have to try and figure out how it works. Personally, for me, I love trying to figure out how new technology works and use it. I was especially excited the other day when a fast food place near my house introduced electronic self-serving order menus. You just pick what you want on a screen, pay for it and sit and wait for your order to come! You don't have to go up to a counter and have that awkward moment where you don't know what you want and you keep the staff waiting, or you actually want to cancel an order you just made, etc....

The biggest problem with self checkout is when you have people who may need help do to a disability... really they need to keep a few lines at least.
