Now that we have the engine out, time to start tearing it down! Based on a quote from the dealership, it would take a trained professional 7 to 8 hours to do a tear-down and build up...so it will likely take me much MUCH longer than that....I built a quick engine stand, and began the process by pulling off the valve cover, removing the cams, and then removing the cylinder head. This process should take less than an hour if your work space set up, and a good system in place for organizing and storing your fasteners.
Prereq: Remove the engine - • CBR300R - How to Remov...
1) To remove the valve cover, remove the two 10mm bolts, and pull it off.
2) To remove the cams...
a) First rotate the crank until you are at TDC of the compression stroke.
b) Then take tension off the timing chain by removing the cam chain tensioning lifter plug (5mm hex drive), and rotate the now-exposed drive feature with a small flathead screwdriver clockwise - hold in place with a vice grip.
c) Remove the chain guide by undoing the two 10mm bolts.
d) Next remove the two cam holders by backing out the eight 10mm bolts, and lifting the holders straight up and out.
e) Free the cams from the chain by tipping both cam shafts toward the chain, and then pulling the chain around. Use a small wire to prevent the chain from falling into the engine.
f) Remove the shims that are on top of each valve with a magnet.
g) Loosen the two 10mm head bolts and four 14mm head nuts and washers. Extract them with a magnet.
h) Pull off the cylinder head.
