During the pre-race for the 1997 Diehard 500 at Talladega, Ned Jarrett interviews Dale Earnhardt while Dick Bergren introduces his crew

That is the one thing I always loved about Earnhardt. He sat there with 7 championships and 76 wins, and when asked if he thought he was the best, he still denied it. Dale Earnhardt was very successful, but still remained very humble, he never got a big head. I still miss him too.

He may have been the intimidator on the track but he was the most gracious and generous person off the track that you’d ever meet. Not many know of all the good he did for others. He had a heart of gold and drove the car of black. NASCAR has never been the same since February 2001.

Dale Earnhardt was a great man!!! It hurt me...and still hurts today to see the wreck and to know he's gone. I remember; a girl I was dating at that time loved him. When I went to her house the next morning she was crying and told me what had happened. I was shocked...very shocked. I watch these videos and feel it all over again such a shame to lose a great guy and great NASCAR driver! RIP Dale.

Just a true badass. That sport needs him so much now and the only thing he and Jr share is a name. Dale would drive no matter how bad he was hurt, not because he had to, he needed to. @tjazz05 It actually was later diagnosed as a chemical reaction like Dale was talking about. He had a fresh tomato and some actron which is a muscle relaxer. Eating a tomato allows you to take in more fluids and become better hydrated. Dale normally ate the tomato before races, the day at Darlington he took the actron as well and he had a chemical reaction. It had nothing to do with his death which was from a basular skull fracture.

@LUCKYDUCKY 62 The impact of that dega crash in 1996 was way harder than the crash that killed him at Daytona. The crash that killed him was because of the angle of the impact. Our heads, neck and spine rotate and they're all connected. His neck hyper-extended at Daytona and caused his brain stem to separate from his body. This is documented and proven a million times over. The dega crash was more of a side impact and slightly forward, which is why he broke his shoulder.
