Here's a complete broadcast of a first-run episode of The Bob Newhart Show, "You're Having My Hartley," as aired (with 5k telco audio, as was typical of the time) over the CBS network via WBBM Channel 2. (this aired immediately following the final episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, posted separately here: • CBS Network - The Mary... )
In this episode, Bob dreams that both Carol and Emily are pregnant.
(Note: This episode's script was originally written as the series finale. However, the episode was rewritten into a dream sequence once Bob Newhart decided to return for one more season and didn't want to play a father. Thus, it became only the Season 5 finale)
(Additional info: The rewriting of the plot point of this episode as a dream sequence, in the wake of Mr. Newhart's committing to a sixth season, proved to be a harbinger of the ultimate series finale of Bob's subsequent 1982-1990 show Newhart, where it is revealed that the entire Newhart series (where he played Vermont innkeeper Dick Loudon; also co-starring Mary Frann as his wife Joanna, Julia Duffy as Stephanie the maid, Tom Poston as handyman George Utley, and quirky characters like Larry, Darryl and Darryl) was a dream; after Dick is bonked in the head by an errant golf ball around the grounds of the Stratford Inn, he awakens as Dr. Robert Hartley back in Chicago, in bed with Suzanne Pleshette reprising her Bob Newhart Show role as his wife Emily.
However, Marcia Wallace's character, Carol, did turn out to be pregnant in this episode; alas, it would never be spoken of again.)
Guest stars were Tom Poston (who later joined Bob again on his 1980s "Newhart" show), Bobby Ramsen and Jean Palmerton.
Includes:
Note: The opening credits of the Bob Newhart Show broadcast have been "modified" to prevent KZfaq blocking. The rest of the broadcast has not been altered. Enjoy. - Fuzzy

Thank you for this wonderful video! My parents, siblings and I would all watch, every Saturday night. We got to stay up late (and have one small glass of Coke and some chips) to watch MTM, Bob Newhart Show and Carol Burnett!! I was young and always loved when my mom and dad would laugh at these shows…I didn’t understand the humor until I got older.😂 This particular episode is special because of the United Airlines commercial too. As a child I dreamed of being a flight attendant and for the past 25 years I’ve been doing just that…living in Chicago 🏙️ and flying for United Airlines!! ✈️

An interview in the 90s mentioned that Poston and Plechette came up with the last episode of Newhart at a couples dinner as an off the cuff joke based on this episode. However the show kept getting wilder and wilder after Larry, Darryl and Darryl became regulars. It had become complete farce by the last season... So my guess is that Newhart himself came up with something like that years prior.

I HATED waking up in the 70s, and I REALLY HATE waking up NOW, BUT EVEN MORE! It was easier before burying several loved ones, and losing several pets. Now I wake up with massive depression...

They also don't look any better on higher resolution screens. Lol That was how they looked on a 400 lb (no joke) solid wood TV console.

Yes! Watching the show about old friends getting together is getting together with these old friend characters once again. A wonderful series. Hard to believe it was so long ago, but now - everything is. . . .. I assembled a playlist of all the Bob Newhart Show clips I could find. This one dropped off when they reposted it. It's back on. There is never an ideal time to have a baby. There are stupid times to have a baby, but never ideal times. (Jordan Peterson) If you're not doubting that it's the right time to have a baby, then you're pretty much in a normal situation and you'll be fine.

Bob was actually 8 years older than his character (age 40 in this episode). 40 is not too old to have kids.

@mchris65 It was definitely uncommon. "From 1972 and 2015, the share of newborns’ fathers who were older than 40 doubled from 4.1 percent to 8.9 percent".

@@malloriebrown2027 Yep. Looks like she was born 3 months after his 48th birthday. He and his wife spaced the 4 kids out. Bob was born in 1929. The kids were born in 1963, 1966, 1970 and 1977, so he was in his mid 30s to late 40s when they were born.

Peter Bonerz (Jerry) played a womanizer in the show but the fact is that he was married to same woman for 58 years. The same amount of years is the same for Bob Newhart.

Well, just because they're married means nothing. A lot of women are either very stupid or very dense, as any single woman will tell you (hit on by their husbands)

Well hello Bob (take a drink). 1st, I’m, not complaining, you did a wonderful job skirting You Tube’s restrictions, but I’m curious, of the thousands of shows you didn’t have to modify, why Bob? 2nd- I love how some of these classic sitcoms of the era deviated from the west or east coast and captured the essence of the cities more in the heart land of America. Mary Tyler Moore, Mols. Lavern and Shirley, Milwaukee and of course Bob in Chicago.
