As much as I loved IMSA GTP, I had always considered it the 'love child' of Group C and the constraints (SELL COMMERCIALS!!!, and KEEP IT SHORT) upon motor racing required by American television. Was home one night channel-surfing, saw this thing, and hit "record" on the VCR. Hey, at least they picked the right year to do it!
It's full of the usual MSM nonsense when non-racers talk about racing..but IMO quite a few bits of reality about our sport survived the process. And I could swear that whoever edited the video had seen Steve McQueen's movie.

I love the guy shoving the other guy out of the way in the first Jag pit stop...the old Le Mans pit lane was insanely narrow!

Can't believe this was on regular TV! I don't remember it being broadcast back then and I was following anything racing. I think it honestly does a pretty good job at showing the race too, for someone who doesn't know racing at all to even for die hards like us.

They showed the start on grandstand on BBC1, such was the interest in the jag, glory days for Le Mans

I remember this being broadcast. I want to say it was Sunday night. I had an RC12L road car with the xkr-9 body and silk cut decals that I raced. Thought I was Davy Jones.

I remember watching races like this many others back then in person. IMSA GTP and Group C is still by far the very best time to be a race fan. I'll pass on the modern era.

Glad you enjoyed it! I think the reason I kept it was that I actually work in TV, and how folks in MSM treat our sport kind of fascinates me. Even back then, there was an 'alternative media' for motorsport. Mostly cable TV coverage of the races, and magazines & 'newspapers like Autoweek, On Track, and National Speed Sport News.

oldSCCAguy yah Definetly it is. Im an old sportscars"geek" and i only regreat how hard it is to find more Le Mans racing videos, mainly from the 80s. The 962 series were kings of their time even in the US IMSA series.

Duke Video take a lot of Le Mans stuff down, often stuff they don't even own, like the ESPN broadcasts of the races. I had the 1991 ESPN coverage of Le Mans and Duke took it down even though they didn't even own ESPN...

Michael Andretti for years wasn't respected the way his father was he was considered a dangerous irresponsible driver. I haven't kept up with his career but people who walk around with oppinions like that are nearly always Jackals of Mediocrity. Not wisened warriors .

Thanks. I've been trying to find this for some time... This was upped here on KZfaq some years ago but it vanished. Is there something missing from the beginning? I remember there was a classic 80s music intro. :D And the original name was "48 Hours on the Fast Track"?

deggis4, Entirely possible that I missed the earlier versions before I posted it up. I was a young guy back then, and just stumbled across it while playing with the remote one night, and was surprised that a major network in my country was actually paying attention to my sport. This is another copy of the actual source vid, not something that a previous uploader had done with the old footage.
