It's been my favorite episode since the first time I saw it. It's done so spectacularly. I never got over Spocks' analogy to the laws of the universe and saying, "Therefore, it is an illusion." They don't show it to the very end.

A triple mind-meld---coupled with powerful hypnotic suggestion---exactly what was needed in this situation. I never knew that Spock had this at his disposal---but every time I watch this I get caught up in it. Another example of "wuh tepul t'wuh kashek"---the power of the mind---in action---and I have a new appreciation of it.

Fight scene was very realistic because Shatner did his own stunts here. I think he fought to do the stunts and was allowed to do the less complex ones. Shatner was always athletic in his younger years.

This is my favourite of all Star Trek scenes! Love the ‘time for payback’ look in Kirk’s eyes at the end of this and this combined with his unwillingness to kill is the just sublime! Pure brilliance, pure genius, pure Star Trek!

this is the best mind-meld scene in 50+ years of star trek. amazingly well-acted by nimoy (and everyone else - check jimmy doohan's face as his eyes bug out when spock initiates the meld), the way his uses his face, his voice, and his hands to create the experience. also, the jerry fielding score is superb, as is vincent mceveety's direction - the placement of actors, the camera angles. i could just go on and on about how brilliant this scene is. i never get tired of watching this. proof again that the third season is much, much better than the conventional narrative gives it credit for.

@StoneKnivesBearskins In 72 there was a "Sci Fic convention and me & about 3 others were in the lobby and met Mr Kelly. Has waiting for his car & told those getting it he wanted to talk with us---ended up being about 40 mins of his time---a truly wonderful human being---very kind and infomative.

It's funny. I was born in 1980, so I grew up on TOS repeats and the Movies. Then TNG came along in '87 and my focus shifted there. I always thought TOS was a bit "kooky" compared to the Movie era and TNG. But the older I get, the more I appreciate the stories, the acting, the music, the FX. When you remember this was made in the same decade as Lost in Space, you realise just how advanced it was. Imagine if they'd been given the budget they needed and it had run for 7 years like TNG, DS9 & VOY... we can but dream.

I always liked this episode. It gets degraded sometimes, mostly because of the lack of sets due to budget constraints, but that's its charm. The minimalist surreal atmosphere enhances the story. This scene in particular is one of my favorites from the Original Series. Spock is a bad ass. RIP Mr. Nimoy

Yes, the episode is a triumph of talent over a low budget to create a truly imaginative and intelligent story of Kafkaesque horror staged as a western, only to have cool reasoning discover the way out and faithfulness to deep principle achieve victory after all.

This was a good one. Captain Kirk had the opportunity again to kill and chose not to. Spock confronts Kirk and says but you wanted to kill. Kirk says that’s how man moved toward! Wanting to kill but resisting the Urge

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Vulcan mind-meld is to me the versatility, the many ways in which it can be performed. As we all know---or should---the Vulcans are a telepathic species, some more adept at it than others, and Spock is one of the best at doing it. As I observed him in action in this scene I realized that what he was doing with the other three members of the landing party was actually a type of telepathic hypnosis; he was conveying to each of them the same suggestion, worded a bit differently for each one but always the same idea. I've seen him do this in some other episodes.

And apparently that was a cost-saving measure. It was more expensive to rent an existing Old West set than to build this surreal set on soundstages. It turned out to be very effective.

I know what you mean, Coral. Have you ever noticed that when Spock performs a mind-meld---the technical term, by the way, is "synaptic pattern displacement"---his voice drops considerably and becomes both compelling and restful, just holds your attention? I think I mentioned once that what he was doing was a type of telepathic hypnosis, exactly what was needed in this situation.

I have seen many Movies and Documentaries about the Gunfight at the OK Corral. I have seen "Hour of the Gun", "Gunfight at the OK Corral" and Tombstone. . . .but. . . nothing came close to the intensity and terrifying fear of this Star Trek episode! . . .it looks like there is gonna be a big showdown!

After all that is one of the things that make using bullets that are only illusions so convenient , since it is just as easy to skip the reloading and also have the illusion of having plenty more bullets available.

This is one of those times/scenes where only Shatner's Kirk could pull it off. No other ST Captain could do that primal physical beat down and have that wide emotional range in that 80 seconds from when Kirk faces the bullets until he throws the gun away. Prime Shatner at his best!

I loved this scene when I was a kid: Spock mind melds with the gang to realize the true nature of the reality, and when the Earps and Holiday shoot at them, Kirk and the gang are totally unharmed, and I was shouting, "It worked!" Then when Kirk overpowered an Earp and put away his gun, the Captain showed how much of a better man he is. It was a moment when Kirk displayed the best of Starfleet and his time and thus won a real victory by keeping to his principles.

Best part of the episode - Scotty takes a shot of whiskey before testing the gas . . Spock looks at Scotty quizzically . . Scotty - "Uh...to kill the pain" Spock - "But, this is painless" Scotty - "You should have warned me sooner Mr Spock!" Spock proceeds with "WTF" look on his face...

The most interesting thing about this episode was the portrayal of Wyatt Earp and company as the villains of the situation. In just about every other cinematic/television version of the story they are always the heroes. I was always curious why the writer of the episode went that way.

The alternate version of the Shoot out at the O K Corral was the Ambush at the O K Corral as the Earps were just as bloodthirsty as the Clantons and the affiliated “Cowboys” and were out to take care of a thorn in their side by gunning the gang down.

Probably because the Earp's and Doc Holiday were better known by the general public. Having the Enterprise crew fighting the Clanton's etc wouldn't have the same impact. The writers could also 'handwave' the portrayal by saying it was all part of the 'simulation'!

Reponse007 Are you kidding ? This is my favourite scene in the whole Star Trek pantheon! I have always loved the mixing of science fiction with other established genres such as the Western. This is in one of the most memorable scenes in one Star Treks most memorable episodes (though some of the super hardcore fans dislike ALL of the Third Season of Star Trek TOS (including this)!

None of it would have been so memorable without the distinctive, creative and unorthodox cinematography and lighting of the late great Jerry Finnerman, who worked on most episodes. Let’s be happy that Roddenberry went along with it.

The legend of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday and what took place in Tombstone Arizona lives on even today and Star Trek’s homage to the Wild West is one of the reasons why. And I note that amid our space age technology, this classic confrontation of a showdown with simple, plain old handguns is still more riveting and more intense than today’s films with all their high tech special effects.

Star trek-shootout at Ok Corral. Deforest Kelley who plays Bones McCoy was in the 1957 movie "Gunfight at Ok Coral" Playing one of the Earp brothers. That one Had Burt Lancaster as Wyaat Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday.

This episode is one of the most memorable of the original series, not because of its plot (why on earth would an alien race seize on a minor historical event from four centuries past as a proving ground for visiting strangers -- especially since it isn't even part of the cultural past of three of the five Enterprise men?), but because of its striking atmospherics. The half-built structures, the uncanny silence, the bright colors of the sky, and the stylized acting of the guys playing the Earp gang all combine to create a really interesting.mood. Let's not dwell on the fact that this is the most nakedly imperialist episode of "Star Trek". "We're going to trespass on your territory and force our company on you, all in the name of 'establishing friendly relations', whether you like it or not." Commodore Perry in Tokyo Bay, 23rd century style.

One of my favorite episodes!.. Made me want to make the trip and visit the actual Tombstone O.K. Corral site... which I would recommend to anyone!.. They give you a copy of the 1881 Tombstone Epitaph newspaper Kirk reads earlier to realize the time period they're in. Even the gunfight reenactment set they have for the shootout kinda resembles the facade like look from Star Trek.

Reminds me of the divine intervention scene in Pulp Fiction.The shots shooting up the fence behind them but missing the Enterprise crew themselves.

I'm sixty; this episode used to freak me out when I saw it. It was the setting and the blank look on the cowboys faces; and the look on the faces during the mind melt.

This was my first exposure to Star Trek. The Specter of the Gun. It looked like a poor stage play. I didn’t get it. ( This was in 1969, high school) I gave it a 2nd chance and I’ve loved it ever since. TOS was and will always be the best Star Trek.

Before he was cast in Star Trek, Leonard Nimoy was in Gunsmoke and, yes, Tombstone Territory. DeForest Kelly also was in the Western genre before Star Trek.

i'm with pistol71, this is an *awesome* scene, and is hands-down the creepiest, best mind-meld sequence in the entire series. this episode epitomizes, to me, how budgetary limitations really got the best out of all concerned with the show - less with more. i wouldn't trade 2 seconds of this episode for that entire piece of jj abrams crap from last year. beyond classic.

I particularly like to watch those episodes where the Vulcan mind-meld (or synaptic pattern displacement, or in Vulcan "wel-haf nel-dath sa'dvun") is performed, one way or another, with or without physical contact. There is something about the procedure that grabs me and won't let go, and I feel almost as if I were participating. Oddly, a few times I feel calmer, my nerves steadier, after witnessing one.

The Mirror Universe is a fantasy, like Q making a universe where Picard is a lowly lieutenant but everything that he accomplished was done by someone else, so nothing else was changed.

@@thefurrybastard1964 It's true that FTL (Faster than Light) travel is a fantasy. But some fantasies are less likely than others, like magic.

@@sandal_thong8631 And in that regard, the Mirror Universe is more fictional than full blown fantasy. Science is actually investigating the possibility of alternate universes and taking the possibility seriously.

@@thefurrybastard1964 I watched the show, _Sliders_ but there's really no way you could reset the world (like from time travel) and have exactly the same people live in a completely different society. If it were possible to go back in time just before George Washington was conceived (even if on the other side of the planet), there would be something like a 49% chance of a male being conceived, and even if the parents named him George, the random nature of conception would mean it would be improbable to the point of impossible that "our" George Washington would be born. Now, perhaps the time travel of _Avengers: Endgame_ gets around this paradox by going to a divergent Earth (universe) that changes from the moment they arrive.
