Such a great episode… I love the surrealistic Old West partial set, and Spock’s brilliant pep talk to the landing party about it all being an illusion, including the bullets that were going to be flying later at the OK Corral. 1960’s Sci Fi TV at it’s finest!

Interesting thing. The Melkotians said the shootout at Tombstone would form "the pattern of your deaths" and they cast Kirk as Ike Clanton. Spock realized they weren't caught in replay of history because Billy Clayborn didn't die at the O.K. Corral. It turns out that Ike Clanton didn't either -- he ran away. Whoever wrote the episode didn't do their homework, but it was still entertaining.

"Spectre Of The Gun" from "STAR TREK"s third and final season (1968-1969) on NBC, was an extremely superior episode, blending both The American West with the futuristic Starfleet society, and its valuable standards. written by Lee Cronin (alias for Gene L. Goon), this episode reflected the popularity of the TV Westerns back in their day, when they still ruled Primetime TV -mostly throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, but this episode was very exceptional, using science fiction, as The Melkotians punish Kirk and his landing party for disregarding one of their their space buoys, and creates a semi-realistic version of Tombstone, Oklahoma, as "the patterns for their deaths"-especially with Wyatt Earp and his men! The eerie look and feel of this episode really did a great job of re-creating The American West, and the scary events of The OK Corral. Ron Soble, who was the co-star of the ABC series, "THE MONROES" (1966-67) guest starred as "Wyatt Earp", and Abraham Sofaer was the voice of The Melkotian (Sofear also appeared in "Charlie X") all did such fine performances in this classic 1968 episode!
