Cardboard baby boxes could allow safe sleep for babies

An unusual idea to keep babies safe is spreading in the U.S. Parents are investing in boxes that serve as cardboard cribs for infants. Doctors say the simple design could lower infant mortality. Tony Dokoupil reports on the origins of this growing movement.

Precisely. Finland has been giving out these boxes since 1938 for free WITH all baby needs covered (clothes and bedding) and now the Americans think they are so special. No need to re-invent the wheel.

That box is to be used only as long as the baby fits in it... I am a finnish and most likely slept my first months in a box. When I grew out of the box I was moved into an usual crib.

I was born premature while my parents were on a trip, and they weren't prepared. So as a newborn, I slept in a dresser drawer! (Taken out of the dresser, of course.) It worked just fine. Boxes are a genuinely good option if you don't have access to a crib for whatever reason.

Me too. Unexpected vacation preterm birthday. I also slept in dresser drawer in my parents bedroom.

I haven't had my son yet but with this I won't have to worry about bothering anyone where its easily can be moved. He'll have this to sleep in when I leave him at my sisters to go to work until she can take him to his daycare. God thank you I found this easy and small to use thing for my perfect baby.

@@gharghkull1013 clothes? just one lightweight outfit the baby will outgrow within a week. I will say with the newborn diapers ( cost 10 usually) , the bottle, the matress u can get at walmart for 5 dollars and the box is worth at least 25 dollars. no more

@@xo7499 In Finland you get a box full off all items a baby needs for the first months. different clothes, toys, dipers,... And you get to chose money or box and box is more valuable.

This is neat. Pastor Raul Ries of CC-Golden Spring used dresser drawers and boxes as cribs. This is ok.

okay, first of all, they should not provide lids for these boxes/cribs. you know some idiots will use it thinking they can. second, wouldnt that box roll over with baby weight if he shifts to a certain side???? 70 for a carboard? that witch nose sure saw people coming

Miguel Torres I bet it's because there isn't much room for anything else. A big crib with a little baby looks empty, so people are more likely to put a blanket or toy in. I'm just speculating.

I'm a Finn and I was very likely put in a box like these. Am I alive? Yes... Am I offended? No... it helps to know that my parents took care of me in whatever years I cannot remember vividly. If the box worked, great! It feels good to know that our government is using our tax money the right way. The other ways I could have been born in might have been a lot worse.

Your “motherly instincts” don’t do sh*t when you’re asleep. You got lucky. And you aren’t supposed to have pillows or blankets in a babies crib so a bed is so unsafe.
