Your body cools itself through the skin, so dunking your forearms, which represent 10% of the skin's surface area, in ice cold water can speed the cooling process in hot weather. CBS News national environmental correspondent David Schechter reports.

I do this with my kids! On really hot days, we take ice packs with us and put them on our wrists. I've also stopped and asked a business owner for a cup of Ice to cool my son (most people will help you)! Very smart to do this in the army, low tech/cost!

I umpire baseball and I use a special cooling towel that works wonders. Really looking for unique ideas before hand to prevent heat illness. Umpiring behind the plate in triple digits is harder than it looks. You don't get to take your gear off during the game. Plus umpires (unlike catchers) tuck in the attire over the chest protector and shin guards.

So, I did a tour in Honduras [and points South] in the bad ol' days of Reagan era gunboat diplomacy. There wasn't a whole Hell of a lot of ice down there in boonies. But what we would do is find the coldest water we could, get three bandanas wet, and loosely tie one bandana on each wrist and around our necks. It didn't work as well as ice water would, but it helped.

Back in my USN engineroom days (1980's) we had times in the Persian Gulf the temp in engineroom would be over 120 degrees and humidity would be 80%. For severe heat stress we would evacuate the affected engineer and place ice in his groin and abdomen area. It worked.I would soak rags or by dixie cup (hat) in ice water and wrap my head to avoid heat stress. That worked too. There were times we had to keep a fire house spraying on the main engine (steam turbine but still called an engine) oil coolers to keep the temp down too. Water temp in parts of the Persian Guld would exceed 95 degrees. Freaking hot over there.

It was a 12 miles hike and I remember every step, because I started with a stress fracture, and by the time the march was over, my foot was broken in 6 places, but my entire right side medical problems from my feet to my hips is NOT service related.

Army vet here...Iraq a few times...grew up in the south...this actually works...in Iraq we would take gear off and poor water over our heads and chill for a few minutes and then get right back into it...im retired now and daily i go down to the creek in 98* weather and fish and lay out in the sun...when i get hot i just simply submerge myself into the cool creek and then im good for another hour before starting to sweat again and then just repeat...shade and cool water will keep you safe and still keep you going in the heat...and of course hydration:)

In '00 and '01, I participated in the Visiting Cousins program at Kings Landing, a historical village here in New Brunswick, Canada. One of those years, the week that I was there was a hot one, and we were encouraged to put our wrists under the water spout at the trough in the town square, where we could also get a drink. The counsellors explained that the wrist is a pulse point, and cooling the pulse points cools the body. That trick worked, and I still do it today. This is a larger version of what I learned, hitting two pulse points and the area between, and I can see it being even more effective.

I get the idea behind the arm baths, but couldn't you do that with any part of the body? like stick your feet/legs in an ice bath? Or are veins closer to the skin level in your arms. Also I see one problem with these techniques... they only work when you're near civilization i.e. training on a base, because you won't have access to ice when you're in combat.

Interesting, and if it works, it works. Ft. Moore--FKA Ft. Benning--is a toasty place to train; I drank an awful lot of water to stay hydrated there, that's for sure! Due to the heat and humidity, many times at the end of the day, my uniform was stiff from all the salt that leeched from my skin due to sweating...and I'm not a guy who normally sweats that much! We didn't do any arm immersion at Sand Hill in '09 (or any hot place I went afterwards), but we had ice sheets back then, and we were trained in how to look for heat injuries and how to use the ice sheets that were in the coolers that followed us everywhere we went.

They do this so they can train longer or at least maintain training levels as the temps go higher, and yes, they are going up. Some people making these comments are overly partisan and political ignoring simple reality on purpose to stick to empty talking points, or they never experienced hot humid days in full uniform while training. If soldiers can't train as long or as intensely they will be less effective. They won't always be in only hot environments during deployment or during combat, and they need broad level training alongside environmental tolerance, but if they let trainees or recruits get heat stroke it distracts from the mission.
