SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket suffered a catastrophic engine failure as it launched a batch of Starlink satellites into orbit Thursday night, the first time in nearly a decade the rocket has failed. CBS News space consultant Bill Harwood has more on that and the latest images from the James Webb Space Telescope.

"Catastrophic failure" is a weird way to say "partial failure". The payload was delivered to orbit - just not a very desirable one. Some of the satellites may yet be able to save themselves with their thrusters. It is notable, though, for the most reliable spacecraft in human history to experience any kind of failure. The headline makes it sound like it crashed into an orphanage.

Falcon 9 launch success rate is 96%. Counting the many failed 1st stage recoveries, that number would be lower. Many modern launch vehicles, from many countries, have launch success rates of 100% - e.g. Ariane 5.

Catastrophic failure? LoL no it's not even close. The failure rate of Falcon 9 is 0.34%. Doesn't change a thing. The launch was perfect, booster landing was perfect as usual. Payload was delivered to orbit just not quite accurate.

Ignored!! Typical drama from the media. Let's make a big deal out of an engine failure, in space, by a PRIVATE company, with no cost to taxpayers. SpaceX doesn't have to tell the public squat, but they share some. They don't even need to publicize a launch, never mind an engine anomaly. Good lawd!

Probably one qualification fire at the McGregor test facility. The single engine in the 2nd stage is a one and done component in terms of flights. And since I am posting from the future...the failure was from a cracked line on a sensor. Stress from movement allowed by a loose fastener. That particular sensor has been removed from upcoming 2nd stages as SpaceX says they have plenty of coverage from other sensors. The other sensors have been inspected and tightened.

SpaceX has a taxpayer funded government contract to shuttle astronauts on various Artemis missions up and down to the moon. It took 4 attempts to get that rocket to orbit successfully, not to the moon, just to orbit! In the comments on those videos all the SpaceX fans talked about how great the Falcon 9 is, not that they’re made for the same purpose or have any of the same components. Now the workhorse has a problem and it wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out Elon had everyone working on Starship and quality control on everything else went through at a lower rate.

I totally understand the need for an FAA invitation, SpaceX I'm sure is even more committed to finding what went wrong. It's indicative to the future of space science and exploration. One wonders why the FAA hasn't grounded the Chinese space program, the reckless re-entry of their rockets and the latest accidental launch and explosion in a populated area. Or perhaps the FAA is delaying SpaceX progress in favor for cheap Chinese replicas ?
