According to a CBS News poll, more than half of young voters definitely will vote in 2024, and only 7% say they will likely not vote. CBS News correspondent Lana Zak spoke to three young voters who pointed toward issues, and not political parties, that are influencing their votes.

@chetsenior7253- 🎯💯👏👍 We are a “flawed democracy” on the Democracy Index because of 1) the electoral college 2) plurality voting 3) the Senate 4) gerrymandering to the House 5) money in politics (ie, Citizens United, lobbyist etc). Do you know what they call a “popular vote” in other countries? A vote. Bottomline: Depending what state you live in, your vote could be sharp sword, or a rusty can opener. But, we go to war with the tools we have.

For these kids to say that they are not sure of which party they are going to vote for is just so dispiriting and quite naive in my view. @Noneofyourbizniz1

That’s what they r , young and naive. Cuz if they follow politics they would see that the democrats care about the environment and the climate. The biggest climate funding ever to passed was introduced by Biden administration. They really don’t know what’s happening cuz they don’t know what’s being done. And I’m surprised the interviewer didn’t point that out. Come November 2024 people gonna have 2 choices Biden and a republican. They better stop fuqing around cuz our democracy is at stake and all the care about that they mentioned in that segment will not happen if republicans take over. It’s like do they not know that the republicans are trying to roll back EPA regulations that r there to protect the environment? They r young and definitely not knowledgeable about politics and what’s actually being done. You can’t get your news from social media kiddos. Do your research

@jas1049
@jas1049 9 ай бұрын
@@Henry-xu5jg Apart from Cheney, Kingzinger and Romney and perhaps a handful of less well known others I don’t really accept that at all, at least from the point of view of protecting American democracy. You have to remember 56% of the entire Republican Congress (147 out of a total of 262 Republican Representatives in Congress at the relevant time raised objections to certifying the electoral college votes from the 2020 Presidential election). You also have to remember that, regardless of whether or not individual GOP representatives might or might not reasonably be considered to be moderate, the GOP (acting as a political party) at both State and Federal level: (1) consistently supports the introduction of Nationwide/Statewide abortion bans; (2) consistently resists the introduction of any type of reasonable gun control measures; (3) consistently promotes and promulgates anti-LGBT talking points and measures; (4) more or less consistently promotes and implements voter suppression measures designed to negatively impact the ability of people to vote freely and easily (specifically the ability of people from demographics considered more likely to vote against the GOP); (5) consistently promotes economic and taxation policies designed to benefit large corporations and the super wealthy at the expense of the middle and working classes ; (6) consistently refuses to support legislative or regulatory measures designed to combat climate change and consistently promulgates a culture of climate denialism; - to give you just a few examples (there are many, many more). It doesn’t really matter whether a particular State or Federal level Republican candidate might be considered to be a moderate, the stance of the GOP as a party is almost never anything remotely akin to “moderate” and their policy positions absolutely do not work to the benefit of the vast, vast majority of young Americans. And RFK (not sure why you brought him up) is famously another conspiracy theorist who is considered (even by the majority of his own close family members - who have publicly spoken about him) to be unreliable, erratic and prone to adopting fringe ideologies. Most importantly, however, for all people in the U.S. (but particularly for young Americans) the stand out point of alarm regarding the GOP is that, irrespective of the personal views of individual members of that Congress, the Republican Congress, when acting as a Congress, does not believe anymore in democracy - it is that simple. At best they pay lip service to it, but ultimately the GOP congress has shown itself time after time to no longer be a political party dedicated to upholding the core principles of the U.S. constitution.

@@Henry-xu5jg I’m not ignorant at all about the GOP. You are correct in that their are some moderate Republicans (although they are increasingly rare) - but the point is that while there may be moderate Republicans, the GOP as a political party acting in Congress is not remotely moderate. The actions of the GOP, despite its moderates, tend not ever to be moderate. The GOP’s candidate for the Presidency, for God’s sake, is a man that has been found liable for sexual assault (effectively rape) and for defamation (to the tune of in excess of $85 million), liable for a decade long business fraud (for which he has been found liable to the tune of $350 million in penalties), whose business, The Trump Organization, has been found guilty of 17 criminal tax violations and who is facing a total of 91 criminal charges across four separate prosecutions that have yet to be concluded and in which all evidence provided against him is being provided by other Republicans that were part of his Administration. The GOP can hardly be thought of as moderate when they are ready to rally behind putting such a man in the most powerful office in the country. Trump clearly has dictatorial ambitions and you simply cannot call yourself remotely moderate if you are willing to vote for a party that supports a candidate with such extreme, anti-Constitutional views and policies.

The younger generation saw what happens when you sit out on voting. You get Trump. 2016 had historically low turnout, Trump got 2.8 million less votes, but turned the electoral college. If younger people showed up like they did in 2020, you'd get different results. Older people tend to vote conservative and as John Mulaney said, "why order for the table if you're about to leave the restaurant". The upside to younger people voting is "hopefully" getting things to change. Being ruled by a gerontocracy, people who grew up and built their lives in entirely different economic conditions does very little for us younger people. And once the GOP realizes their tent pole stances only appeal to the older generation and loses them elections (they keep dying and not a lot to refill their ranks). Instead of claiming fraud because they isolated all voters but their base, they will have to actually appeal to Americans on the whole. Not just the old white people they draw now. Keep voting!

A sure sign that your democracy is dying is indicated in low voter turnouts, and mid-year and mid-term elections have abysmal numbers. General elections are not any better. When the voting process starts to collapse due to lack of attention, the poorest quality of candidates will be all that we get to chose from. 2016 and 2020 were glaring examples of this.

These are real positive numbers for Democrats. Inflation has come down dramatically and will be normalized by fall 2024. Also, inflation was mostly caused by the Trump administration's increasing the M2 Money Supply in 2020 by 33%. The M2 Money Supply has come down from all of that in 2023. Abortion and reproductive health care is a major positive for Democrats that we saw on Tuesday and is a major negative for Republicans that we also saw on Tuesday. For Jobs that Pay a Living Wage Democrats also lead there. Pres. Biden has major favorable issues now but the far right Republican Party lead by Donald Trump has far more unfavorable numbers and has major character and legal issues.

Voting is compulsory in Australia and you get a fine if you don’t have a good reason for not turning up. You get to line up and buy a Democracy Sausage and a soft drink after you voted. Oh and also, it’s always on a Saturday. Democracy Sausage, is a sausage in a single slice of white bread, with options of onions and BBQ or Tomato sauce. And I’ve never had one, I just get the heck out of there 😂
