Human bodies are needed to advance medical science and many tissue banks that distribute bodies donated to science provide a valuable service. But unlike organ donation, this market is for-profit and largely unregulated, creating opportunities for bad actors to mislead families or outright con people out of their loved ones' remains to line their pockets. In this eye-opening documentary, CBS Reports goes inside the $100 million market where bodies donated to science are bought and sold for profit.

I used to work at a place that processed bodies "donated to science" and had to quit because my moral compass was spinning. The bodies are not treated with respect. The loved ones would be promised that what wasn't used would be returned and cremated, with no charge, and I don't believe that happened once. The parts that could not be used were thrown in a biohazard bin and unceremoniously incinerated. Most of the donations were from people who could not afford cremation services. These people were told their loved ones would be taken care of and used for science, but really their donation would make over a million dollars, make products for cosmetic dental procedures, and the family saw none of that. It was disgusting, and I am permanently scarred from working in this industry. It needs deep, widespread reform.

The night my father passed away, my mother received a call from someone purporting to be an authorized non-profit with state authorization asking her to donate my father's body. My mother, still in shock at the loss of her husband called me in a panic, thinking some government agency would take my father's body away. How the caller knew that my father passed away so soon after his passing and the nature of his treatment at the hospital meant someone at the hospital unit or the hospital morgue gave him the heads-up. After cursing him out, I had no energy to address this with the hospital, who should have spoken to us at the hospital, rather than disclose my father's information to a third party. The incident made me change my preference from organ donor to nondonor. This video is important. There are unscrupulous people in this industry. They take advantage of those who want to give their bodies as their last act on earth to benefit the bodies of the living.

I am an RN that worked for 20+ years in several emergency rooms in Southern California. I don't know if this is for all states or limited to CA but there is a checklist to be completed when a patient dies. On that list is instructions to notify, I believe, it was the eye and tissue bank or maybe it was just eye. I could be wrong about the name since I haven't worked in a hospital for several years. Any way I would have to call and discuss the patient i,e . diseases like cancer, AIDS,,, The eye and tissue bank would make the decision based on that info if tissue could be harvested and if so the patient info would be provided along with next of kin contact. I always felt odd about giving the info because I could imagine while the family is grieving they would get a call from some stranger about donation.
@shebadaboss
@shebadaboss Жыл бұрын
Correct Linda, I actually worked for LifeGift Organ Procurement Center as one who received the call. Based on the information provided from the hospital, we had to make the call within 4 hours of time of death because the procurement has to be done within 24 hours of death. Unfortunately, there was an incident where a coworker contacted the NOK to ask for the eye, bone and tissue donation before they were notified from the hospital itself. I did not stay there long at all once I got a full understanding of what all was going on there.
@JazzyJae88
@JazzyJae88 Жыл бұрын
I work in an ICU. So I handle a lot of death. By law we have to report all deaths to the organ procurement organizations within 60 mins of time of death. We are also not allowed or supposed to approach the family about donation. The procurement agency does. Also if a patient meets certain qualifications before death, the procurement agency needs to be notified within 60 mins. We give them name, DOB, race, admitting diagnosis, medical and surgical history. That’s how they know what they do. So please don’t curse out the staff just doing their jobs. I don’t care what type of panic or grieve you’re in, it’s rude, disrespectful, and not excusable.
@Cletus_the_Elder

@@JazzyJae88 No one here has cursed out the staff or is advocating that people curse out the staff. If you witnessed someone do so, yourself, I am sorry. Wow, I need to revise my end of life paperwork. I have medical issues and intended to donate my body but now I am not wanting to. My thoughts were that I wasn’t going to be using it anymore so I wanted to help create new treatments and further knowledge on diseases but I don’t want there to be a possibility of my flesh being carved away from my bones and then them being displayed. I don’t understand how this industry isn’t heavily regulated. To know that someone with an infectious debase can be dissected and shipped across the country and nobody knowing is scary. One thing I kept thinking about is who knows how many unknown twisted people are in this industry and how many future serial killers could have access…I know I read too many books. A person who wishes to be a donor is MUCH different than what Sunset Mesa did to my parents. We paid Sunset Mesa for cremation services. They dismembered my dad and sold him in pieces, and sold my sweet mother's body whole. The "cremains" we received were not my parents. Those evil people were scamming people to pay them for services not fulfilled, and then selling bodies and body part on the back end. Although there may be reputable companies, most of them are not. The lack of respect in the mutilation of those who should be honored is dispicable. Just because something isn't illegal, doesn't make it moral. I'm so grateful to Adam and Justin and the whole CBS team for exposing a small portion of this seedy scam. The body broker business needs federal regulation.

What would school kids think after seeing this? He said there's thousands visiting each year. First, thank you for reporting on this topic. What happens when someone agrees to be a "Donor" on their driver's license ? Do they end up in a facility like this ? What if someone is targeted for their DNA/blood type/organs ? Second, I would agree with the FBI agent, with regard to implementing ONE legal protocol/law for facilities/businesses that handle the legal donation of a body. Last, there is a difference between body snatching and legally donating a body for legitimate scientific research. Personally, I have a few questions of my own, due to six family members dying in the month of May, and my infant daughter (Miya Jane Justeson 2/23/2007-3/18/2007) whose body must be exhumed to get to the TRUTH of the crime. Gross. They should have an agency in charge of this and provide experience to students in the field and use the profits for education or some public good, instead of letting random people make money. Makes me reconsider being an organ donor.

He doesn’t understand why people want to know how much money he gets per body is because the people are donating them to science ,not donating to make him a millionaire. They give the ultimate gift to science,for medical schools to use to teach future Drs. People were never “donating “ to a for profit company. I explained this to my parents & they said forget it. If someone could be sure their body went though a nonprofit system they would be happier.

WOW, this is why I'm against donating my body or any of my family members . This is disgusting and so disturbing . I don't know how anymore can say something like when people donate their bodies or family members body they know exactly what their doing. I never really have it any thought and I especially never suspected this is what's happens to them. If they told them the whole truth I don't think to many people would do it. I'm going to share this with my love ones and as many people I can . I don't what them to be deceive into thinking a lie. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I think the best thing would be to take the profit out of the picture. Just like organ donation, whole body donation should only be done by ethical and regulated facilities for helping to save lives, NOT TO MAKE MONEY!
@sparkytuttle2966
@sparkytuttle2966 Жыл бұрын
Ok. Don't donate because the people handling a body will make some money. But how do they keep the lights on, hire someone to deal with the body and whatever else they profit from? Even though almost everything mentioned here actually helps mankind? So these people should work for free? And what happens when you don't donate? Doctors don't advance, the military doesn't advance, the forensic department won't advance which will ultimately harm a living person due to lack of donations. And past that, you would rather be paying for a funeral at a cost far higher than cost. It's your right to do whatever you want, that dead body is not your loved one. It's a cadaver. Your loved one is more than than bones, organs and hair. I say, please research before you say no.

It’s the fact they wanted to do this for free. These people wanted to give themselves to benefit others. Not so that doctor can drive a sports car and grandma ends up in a side show. There is a difference in charging someone top dollar for Grandma’s foot versus charging a bare minimum costs.

@@kokokat584I worked at a hospital for years. That’s not true. I’m sorry you’ve been misled but that’s not how any of this works. Organ donation is different than this video. Organ donation via your license (Y/N) is for donation to live patients. Not for science. If you’d like to donate your body to science you have to sign other paperwork and make statements saying so.

Please know that a lot of these donors go to good use. Like the FBI agent said, you want surgeons to practice on cadavers before real people. Also, I understand the woman's frustration as she was not informed about the possibility of DOD testing but living people rely on those military vehicles to be blast resilient and so those tests end up saving lives just the same as if his body was used for medical research/education

I mean I totally understand the shock and emotional devastation of what happened to the woman husband but if we can be honest for a minute what happened to his corpse is really no worst that what would happen after burial. With a traditional funeral, the body is dressed (organs removed, embalmed) and buried. Non casketed bodies buried in the ground will decay naturally and be eaten by insects and maggots, is that really any worst than a body being used as a crash test simulator? At cremation the body is burned into ashes.....is that worst than being cut up into pieces and being used as a Skeleton at a museum??? It may sound absurd because we aren't used to seeing it. But every body is gonna decay one way or the other. I feel like as long as everyone is honest and clear about what the body is used for this isn't really a problem. When u donate your body to science you can't dictate how it's used or how the body is handled.
