In this episode of Person to Person with Norah O’Donnell, O’Donnell travels to Dublin to talk to U2 front man Bono about his new book "Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story." Bono opens up about how the Irish rock band stayed together for decades, his relationship with his father, and going to therapy. Ali Hewson, Bono's wife of 40 years, also sits down with O'Donnell for a rare interview about their relationship.

The first time I listened to, “The Joshua Tree”, I was on a bus to school in Frankfurt, Germany. It opened my eyes and my heart to bigger things, different lives in different countries. I felt a sense of fearlessness and freedom, even as a 15 year old girl, that I’ve never lost. I’ve loved U2 ever since. ❤️

Growing up listening to U2 when I was a kid was like it was just music . I didn’t appreciate the messages of faith, love, to right the wrongs of humanity, or how God used Bono to be the instrument of his will. Only now as I’m in my late 40’s do I really understand the meanings behind a simple Irish rock-n-roll band. I truly hope Bono continues to be an inspiration for others to find faith, and love not just in a marriage between two people, but for the entire human race.

I just turned 60. I first heard a brand new single "I will Follow", in 1979/80 - an after hours club in New York City called "The Nursery". I needed to know that moment who made this song. I begged the dj for some info, even tho his hands were full. I fell in love with U2 right then. I was happy our beloved WLIR put them in heavy rotation from the beginning. Program director Dennis McNamara helped break U2 in the U.S. It's been 42 years for me. I still go to the shows, and get excited for new music. God bless them.

When I bought my first U-2 album, "October," Bono's name was "Bono Vox." - It was "MTV-Music Video's" in America that turned me on to U-2 when I first heard "Gloria." I still don't understand why that song isn't a regular playing hit here in the USA. It is a Rocking Lovely jamming song. I think I even sang it in the shower when I was 21 years old in the 1980's. I'm going to 65 next year [2023].

This was a brilliant, insightful tour of Bono's past, and present--the perfect prologue to receiving his memoir in the post (eagerly anticipated!)! 22:03 That puzzling placement! Mr. Hewson having to create his own image, alongside Irish Writers Long Past. Not only is the man a living legend--his creative roots took place on that very site! His incredible literary artistry, going unrecognized in his own school! ('Comprehensive', it is not!) This particular 'Temple' needs to place Bono's photo at the apex of that grouping: Top. Centre. And in this case, and always: Never Give Up, Never Surrender--you are, and will always be, the Toppermost of the Poppermost! 🥳🍻

Well if it's going to be visited and looked at by Irish people, seeing the way they treat "success" as Bono said here, the people would like that to be taken down from the top centre of the building. I think everyone would find it more humbling and appropriate.

I love U2's music and bon'o's voice and lyrics.. but, Bono is full of contradictions.."Keep it real" he says... ok , sounds good.... then he just 'wanders' into a pub clearly closed to the public just for him and his team for the interview... (keeping it real indeed)..oh.. before i forget..He owns multiple luxury multimillion dollar yachts, many multi million dollar apartments, mansions, villa's, castles, he owns a private equity firm turning millions in profits every year, he's worth well over $700 million. Christian Aid estimated that $160bn is lost to the developing world each year as profits made by the rich are shifted to wealthier tax havens. U2 did exactly this when Ireland changed a law in 2006 to require earnings over 225k annually to be taxed. U2 never paid any tax before this law. Now U2 still do not pay any tax as they shifted their business to a tax haven in the Netherlands. All these carefully crafted interviews are subject to 2 questions not being allowed to be asked.. 1: where do you live?... (clue: NOT Ireland - he visits Ireland).. 2: Why do U2 avoid paying tax?. The questions are vetted by Bono's/U2's PR team beforehand, and if an interviewer were to go 'off script' at any moment then the interview will be shut down,,,, oh, and Bono's team get the final call on the finished edit of the interview BEFORE it goes anywhere near broadcast. I'll give Bono the final say here.. "we are one, but we are not the same....". Indeed Bono, a contradiction in itself from you in your own words staring is in the face. Brazen indeed.

Bono's peak was 83' to 93. And it's not really up for debate. From War to Zooropa. So I don't think he's a better singer now than then, at all. Sorry. But this version of Bono couldn't sing Lemon or Sunday Blood Sunday like it was on war, or Bad like it is on Unforgettable fire, or with or without you like it was on Joshua Tree. They still play these amazing songs, but Bono sounds very, very tired and far less impactful than even in the late 90s early 2000s. Bono's voice now actually works far better in their newer songs than any of the old ones.
