She is the breakout talent whose debut novel, "The Rabbit Hutch," won Tess Gunty the National Book Award for fiction. The novel, set in a downtrodden city inspired by her hometown of South Bend, Indiana, follows young adults who have aged out of the foster care system without having found a "forever" family. CBS News' Robert Costa talks with the 30-year-old author about her own background - both similar and different from her protagonist's - and about her passionate advocacy for the craft of novel writing.

The fact there is book banning in the year if 2023 is so absurd, it's insane and disgusting. Along with many others, books are the reasons for knowledge and they fuel the imagination.

Look how they're grooming Robert Costa to be a future network news anchor. He already has the chops of a political reporter and analyst. And here they are giving him a literary story to cover. What a well-rounded training he is receiving.

So if you want to know what the book is actually about, read it. But it's a novel. Great novels aren't specifically about anything. They have a plot, but their value comes from character development, keen observation, wit, insight, ideas. These Gunty displays very well.

That's false. Great novels are almost always about something. They are not just character development.

Awesome! 🙂 As an award-winning author, this is really cool to see another author receiving some well-deserved recognition. "Reflect upon the Past. Embrace your Present. Orchestrate our Futures." --Artemis 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind’s journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart and soul’s fate revealed. In time, all points converge, hope’s strength re-steeled. But to earn final peace at the universe's endless refrain, We must see all in nothingness... Before we start again." 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ --Diamond Dragons (series)

Nonsense. Good diction is very attractive. In this case, it's paired with eloquence, but her tone is completely natural and you can tell she's speaking spontaneously. You may be unused to crisp diction used to express thoughtful ideas and thus dismiss it as pretention, but would you rather have nasaly lilts with lots of vocal fry or swallowed consonants?

In the photography they showed one can see 4 very small children, two at least even looking like twins. Probably one of the parents had to stay at home, or working part-time for some years and the best colleges in the USA are very expensive without a good scholarship. She referred she went to a catholic high school, which I imagine was private. Her BA is from Notre Dame which is equally private.
