Understanding the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model is crucial for an IT career. Not only does it come up in several certification exams, but it can help you conceptualize how real-world applications work end-to-end.
In this video, CBT Nuggets trainer Keith Barker (‪@KeithBarker‬) covers three important aspects of the OSI reference model: what is it, how does it work, and how can we use it?

Keith you are the best IT instructor that I've come in "contact" with; you understand your subject matter well - this is testament in the manner in which you explain...a fan forever.

We used this channel for studying network stuff in evening school at Belgium. Took us 3 years, 2 days a week from 19h till 22h... Pretty rough after a day of work. The info was good stuff! I like the visualization of all the info... makes it easier to understand. Especially when your 40 (slower brain daaaah) and our native language in class is Dutch... However: speaking slower would be even better lol... (brain needs time to translate English to Dutch AND at the same time understand what was just told... but the time it takes to do that, there are already 3 other things explained lol... so very hard in that way hehehe)

This is great! ultimate demystification of what and why the osi concept exists and what its relevance is today! I have studied the concept for over 5 yrs and this is the most 'laymen' acceptable way to show the OSI's current relevance. 10 on awesomeness of explanation.

Of all the videos I've seen covering this topic yours had to be the most helpful. The OSI model doesn't really "click" until you actually use a pack analyser (plus it would've been helpful if my lecturer explained why we were ignoring layers 5 & 6...). Thanks.

Wow, that's the explanation I've been waiting for! OSI looked to me like pure academic/abstraction stuff to me until now! Your explanation was awesome!!!

Super informative stuff! Thanks for all you do. I have watched a ton of videos about this lately as I’m studying for my Net+ test. Every single video I’ve watched has said that the OSI is obsolete and not used. Why is it still referenced and on the test? Thanks again!

do you think the Session Layer is not present anymore... ?how about SSL, TLS and other session oriented protocols... this protocols work initiating/maintaining/ending sessions... the part of the stack that never make much sense to me (in the real world) was the presentation layer... I would also like to hear your thoughts about the historic part of this layer...

As I recall it, the OSI model was concocted when the 'experts' thought in terms of a rigid architecture that would be heavily specified from top to bottom. They didn't imagine an unspeced upper layer that allowed for innovation . But for years we had to memorize the 7 layer model even though it wasn't used in practice.

If I open Chrome and log in to my KZfaq account, and then I open a private browser via Chrome and log in to my friend's KZfaq account, then does the Session layer distinguish between data that is sent to and from those two different types of Chrome browser windows?
