** NOTE ** PLEASE READ **
There has been several complaints in the comments about the video being too long. This video was made for those that are not only new to CHIRP but new to two-way radios, I made it to help out people I know who were buying Baofeng's for disaster preparedness. If you understand 2-way radio basics, most of this video is not for you. Any rude comments about this matter will be deleted from this point on.
Using multi-platform program Chirp to program the increasingly popular Baofeng UV-5R as requested by a number of new Baofeng owners I've met on other social networking sites.

When adding new memories using the "Import" option there is an option that says "Adjust New Location". That is the selection that lets you choose what line to add new memories too so it doesn't over ride old ones.

great tip on opening up a new tab and importing the channels there, then copying and pasting it where you want. Because otherwise it seems like it just imports all over the place and distorts your list! So thanks for that!

Well done, this has been most helpful. Even though I'm using my Baofeng mainly as a receiver/scanner the overall information has helped me know which items on CHIRP are either useful or to be ignored. Another plus to this tutorial is the voice only and not the person's face which can be very distracting when taking in lots of information. I only needed to watch this once.

My #1 beef with all these CHIRP programming vids is none tell you about NAMING FREQUENCIES / MEMORY CHANNELS. If you name a freq in CHIRP and upload to radio, it won't display unless you change 2 of the menu options on the radio itself. Once upload to radio is complete, disconnect from USB cable and find MDF-A and MDF-B in the menu options. Select "NAME" in both MDF-A and MDF-B. MDF = Multi-Display Function. A or B is watch channel 1 (top) or watch channel 2 (bottom). You're welcome.

WELL done - being very down-to-earth HELPED. I watched this twice because of both the NEW-TO-ME Chirp, but also programming those BAOFEND buddies. You did a great job - and BY accident I received 99% of your message. Many folks (those that have never taught college) are TOO quick to jump on the messenger - rather than realize how very informative a one-way conversation can be. I am brand new to HAM and remember using my police radio now over 46 years ago to 10-4 a command to work security and guard the Manson Family at the L.A. Courthouse in the dinosaur age.

I know this is an old vid but for those watching when you have freqs loaded in already and you want to add new freqs in typically below what you have. BEFORE you enter them in you want to change the to and from numbers by hitting the + or - 10 button and or the + or - 1 button at the bottom of the screen (right below where it says 'ADJUST NEW POSITION") holding the freqs you're about to add. This will change the channel assignment and where what you're about to enter will go in the list. So for example let's say you have all repeaters in your list already and they number 1 to 11 and now want to add all the NOAA freqs. You're gonna bring up the NOAA freqs and look at the to and from column and you'll see they are all set from number 1 to however many there are. If you enter it now, it will simply overwrite the repeaters you've already loaded. So change their position by hitting the +10 button once and the +1 button twice. Now the numbers should read from 12 on. Now when you add these to your list they will go under the repeaters you have listed from 1 to 11 beginning with #12 to however many NOAA stations you have.
@dash8465
@dash8465 4 жыл бұрын
When you import the various lists from various sources, the window that pops up with them is where you position where they'll drop onto your list... its done with the + or - 1, 10, 100 buttons along the bottom.. ie, to drop the new list into your existing list starting at slot 46 you'd click the +10 button 4 times and the +1 button 6 times. The slot numbers on the left should show what they'll end up being in your final list before you add them.

Theo things to note.. 1) you can get the correct driver free from baofang website. 2) windows won't even allow you to select the port if it's not being used so knowing which port you're hooked to is not needed. Whichever you connect to is the only one that you can select and it auto populates..

Just to clarify some items in this video: The Baofeng/Pofung radios are currently type accepted and/or legal for Part 90, which is business band and public safety band. FRS, GMRS and MURS are Part 95, for which these radios are not type accepted. Also, MURS has been an unlicensed radio service since 2000. There may still be some legacy licensed users in some areas. This radio can also be used, as the author stated, in the Amateur Radio Service, since radios for that service are not required to be type accepted. Additionally, Wide vs. Narrow refers to the bandwidth of the Narrow Band FM signal. Wide selects 5KHz signal deviation, and narrow selects 2.5KHz signal deviation. Wide Band FM is used for terrestrial commercial broadcast radio, such as you would pick up on an FM radio in your car. WBFM signal deviation is on the order of 200KHz. Finally, with regard to CTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System) and CDCSS (Continuous Digital Coded Squelch System), attempting to share a frequency by using separate tones also requires you to monitor the frequency without tone squelch, first, to make sure that you are not going to transmit over someone else. In fact, most mobile, commercial, part 90 type accepted radios have a feature where they switch from CTCSS/DTCSS to carrier squelch, when the microphone is taken off hook. Overall a good video, with a little bit of rambling. Probably better suited for a new Baofeng/Pofung user or a new Amateur Radio licensee.

Squelch. The easiest way to explain is it that if the airways are busy and you are hearing too much noise and traffic especially from weak stations that you dont want to hear, move up from zero to hear only the stronger signals. If the traffic is light and you WANT to try to listen to weaker, distant stations, move down towards zero. This would be the way for shortwave listening but it applies here and CB also. At zero setting you hear whatever the radio hears; at the highest setting you wouldnt even hear your neighbor calling you because he wouldnt have a powerful enough signal to overcome that setting. Start at 2-3 and soon enough you will find the right setting for your needs.

Hi. I've had the UV-5R for about a week; watched many videos on this subject and found yours the easiest to follow. Thank you. My problem is that I must be missing something. My primary intent was to use the unit as a scanner - listen in on police & fire incidents in the area with GF (now I'm going to get basic HAM license). Anyway, I followed the steps on the video and everything worked as it ought to. I don't get much activity though. I'm in a very urban area, Hartford CT, and would think that there would be a lot more on the radio. Plus, when I manually enter some frequencies, on the last digit I get a 'Cancel' response from the radio. When I use the FM, it picks-up many stations, even those further away than I would expect. I manually entered a few local fire/police frequencies I got from RadioReference (I signed-up for a subscription), some work, many don't. So, I think the radio it's self is okay. Can you give me an idea of what I might be doing wrong, please? On the Baofeng site I see the newest radio is available for about 65 bucks; do you think I ought to return the UV-5R and upgrade? I've spent about a week working on this and really haven't gotten what I expected; other than on the FM band I've gotten reception maybe on only 2 or 3 VHF signals? I'm frustrated right now. Any advice or instruction will be appreciated. Thank you.

For windows users you will need to install the driver for the usb cable which you can get here: www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php To find out what COM port you are connected to follow these steps AFTER installing the USB driver: - With radio connected to computer go to your control panel - Change view option from "category" to large or small icons - Select "Device Manager" - You can also right click on the "This PC" icon on the desktop and select "Manage" then "Device Manger" - In "device manager" locate the option named "Ports (COM & LPT)" - Expand that option and look for where is says "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM#) - Whatever number follows the word COM in the parenthesis is what your COM port number is. Remember this will change depending what USB port you plug into on your PC so it is best to always use the same USB port.

You should've mentioned that before you can program any baofeng radio you have to put it in VFO Mode (Frequency mode). You can do that on a VFO button on the UV-5R but on the UV-82 or UV-82-HP you have to hold down menu as you turn the radio on.

This step was totally left out of the video. When you already have, for example, channels 1-8 already in the radio, saved, and you dont want to overwrite them, and you have more that you have set up to add. In order to add starting with channel 9 thru whatever, that is what those buttons are at the bottom are for, so you can place the new channels starting with number 9, or skip to 10 if you want to. Doing it this way will keep you from overwriting the channels 1-8 that was already there. For example, clicking the box with the number "10" in it will move "1", to the tenth position. Clicking the box with the number "-1" in it will move it to the 9th position, etc. Just play with it and learn. KM4IVY

OK so I'm pretty sure I bought a counterfeit Baofeng UV5R. It came with a fake programming cable, which didn't work, even when using CHIRP and the official Baofeng software. So I bought the real programming cable but it STILL doesn't work with CHIRP. I got the Baofeng software to work with it, but I'm not able to do everything I should be able to do with it; it won't let me do certain thing within the program. I'm wondering if its the radios fault or something else.

MURS, FRS, GMRS are all regulated under FCC Part 95 for which this radio is not type accepted for. So legally here in the United States, this Baofeng will get you into trouble and can cost you several thousand's of dollars in fines. This radio is FCC Part 90 type accepted and therefore legally can be used in Part 90 (public safety, fire, ems) and amateur radio. This radio is also used by Federal Agencies that fall under NTIA such as NORTHCOM.

Hi mate, thanks for the detailed video. Not sure if I'll get a response considering it's been 8 years since you posted this, but my question is... How can I set a channel to not broadcast anything? My problem is that I am listening to a frequency which I and many others stay tuned into, but I don't want any kids getting their hands on the radio and potentially speaking to hundreds of people. I don't want to disable the whole radio, I just want to disable a specific channel. Please can you give me different options? Someone mentioned I can change the duplex mode to "off", which should apparently only disable that channel from talking to anyone. Thanks mate.

Why would I ever use "LOW" power on the power setting? Does that affect the distance? Just curious? thx!!

depending on what frequency you are on you may be violating some FCC regulations for transmitting

Yes, it affects distance. It also affects how fast you consume your battery!

Thanks well explained video, I have a UV-5R and want to use only as a receiver and would like to disable PTT button, so basically not to use as walkie talkie, is this possible please with CHIRP? Thks

Do you need a ham licence to just use the FRS frequencies? The FRS is authorized 22 channels in the 462 MHz and 467 MHz range, all of which are shared with GMRS.

The FCC does not permit these radios to be used on the FRS, GMRS, or MURS Frequencies although they are capable of operation there.

I am not into amateur radio, but a long time scanning enthusiast. I just ordered a UV-5R on Amazon, but have not received it yet. I have seen several schools of thought online regarding disabling the transmit feature. One says to set the Duplex setting in CHIRP to Off and another says to set the Offset to zeros. However, in your video, I saw check boxes in the Settings > Other tab for VHF TX (transmit) Enabled and UHF TX Enabled. Is it as easy as unchecking those boxes to,ensure you don't accidentally transmit on a frequency you are scanning?

I would imagine it is as easy as unchecking those boxes, but since I'm licensed I don't disable transmit, so I can't verify that behaviour. if you are just listening have you looked into the RTL SDR dongles for computers? That's my next project.

ccg711 I figured it out. I did all three...Duplex to Off, Offset to 0.0000 and unchecked boxes. I heard from other sources simply unchecking the boxes doesn't work, so I wanted to be safe. Great radio to use for scanning only a few frequencies. More sensitive than my scanners. Thanks for the reply!

I just got my radio today. It's a uv82hp. Got the genuine program cable. Programming is a pain in the ass! I found out I hate windows 8 even more, and that it will fail to connect to the radio unless I remove the antenna. Then it's just peachy. What an ass move. I can't transmit yet as the fcc still has yet to push the papers through showing I'm a technician. Hopefully soon. At least I only had to program 5 things for Laramie. Ha! Suck it large city goers!

+TheMonkeyFarted It could be that your radio is picking up a signal with the antenna. It only works with CHIRP if there is not traffic on the frequency the radio is set to.

I do agree with it being rather lengthy however I do understand why, as I am a beginner as well. I am using the new Chirp daily-20160507. Any suggestion with this interface?

IF I ONLY DOWNLOAD NOAA AND FRS SETTINGS AND DELETE ALL THE REST COULD I USE THIS SAFELY AS A WALKIE TALKIE WITHOUT A LISENCE AND NOT CAUSE ANY INTERFERANCE WITH ANY HAMM LISCENCED POEPLE ?

If CHIRP is not supported by Baofeng, what software is supported by Baofeng? I am using CHIRP with only a few issues. But. if there is a Baofeng programming software, what is it?
