What stood out to you most in the song? :)

Tom is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable people today. I found Tom when I was in my darkest place. Food lost flavor, love turned meaningless, everything went gray. I was drinking more than a fifth a day. One day I got into my car and took off for the mountains with the intent of not returning. On my way there the song "Castles" came on spotty. I pulled the car over and broke down on sobs, turned around and went home. I am just over 2 years sober now. My story is in no way unique. There are 10's of thousands of lives that Tom has forever changed. I am not a believer however if there is a god Tom was sent to reach people like me. If Tom was not here I most likely would not.

Love your passion. Tom does this often. Where he struggles publicly with faith and failures. Check out "I wish" "angels" or "castles"

I'm a pretty big Tom McDonald fan so I thought I should chime in here and let you know that he has given up alcohol before doing the song. It's much more about difficulty of sobriety and missing the booze that it is about actively doing alcohol although he touches on some of those themes as well. Tom is in fact a believer in God and attributes his sobriety to God though he still struggles with the temptation of alcohol, Ativan, etc. Despite loving God, he's not sure if it's Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, you get the idea… I desperately wish I could have a conversation with him someday because the difference between Jesus and those gods (theology notwithstanding) is that Jesus is historical and represented thoroughly throughout history. You don't have to be a fool who closes his eyes to evidence to believe in Jesus. That stands out to me so much since I was raised as a Mormon who had to close his eyes to the lack of evidence for Mormonism. Now I'm a proud Christian who is unafraid of what history and science may reveal to us.

Yes, I am a daughter of the Most High God. Those are the words that got me clean in '97. That and prayers of thanks every 10 seconds for seeing me through that 10 seconds. Until I woke up one morning along the way and the urge was no longer with me. Loved the reaction.

I was raised in a pentecostal church. Very strict. But have strayed. This hits hard to me. God help us all.

For me a great reactor is one who really listens to the lyrics and shows us how they affect him/her and reacts with his emotions. There was a comment from another viewer on another video that described what we as commentators are looking for in reactors and he hit the nail on the head so I'm repeating his words because it is also what I believe. I personally think Tom's first verse is about not feeling accepted or not agreeing within organized religion and keeping his own personal faith in God how he see's him to move forward to who he has become today

I have a pet peeve when I hear people say he(GOD) doesn’t listen or say they aren’t getting the acknowledgement they arbitrarily decided they want! So, I'm an Atheist, but I love this song and totally understand where he's coming from. He does believe in a God, but says he has no way of knowing who or what that God actually is. But he does have faith in a higher power and creator. So, the song is basically about the thoughts that addiction makes you think. You don't think straight when you're addicted to something. So, them questioning if God is there was his way of basically crying out for help, but just feeling like he wasn't getting a response. He's been sober for a good while now, so this is a song more about how he felt when he WAS addicted. I relate to this song in the sense that, even though I don't believe in God, I use that as a metaphor for wanting to go back to the things in my life that used to make me happy, but the alcohol addiction holds me back. I don't drink every day, but I do a few nights per week. I don't get wasted and beat my wife or do stupid stuff. It's just a way to self-medicate for depression and anxiety and I have enough to feel numb enough to go to sleep. I don't get the shakes or have withdrawals if I go without drinking for days at a time, either. For me, it's more of a mental addiction than a physical one. Making music used to be my escape from depression and anxiety. I used to have SO many things that I was doing that I was far too distracted to ever realize that I was depressed. Sadly, it's gotten to a point where I just stopped caring about the things that used to be my productive crutches, and I'm struggling to get that love for it back. So, for me... those positive and productive activities that used to make me happy and feel complete would be my "god" in this case. ADDITIONAL NOTES: I absolutely have those moments where it feels like people would be better off if I wasn't here. Hell, that I'D be better off if I weren't here. Luckily, I've lived through enough close friends and family deaths to know how wrong those thoughts are. I've had moments where I was ready to self-delete, but couldn't do it because I know how it will effect the handful of people who really care, and I can't do that to them. I continue to suffer a lot of the time just so that others don't have to feel that pain. Otherwise, I would likely not be here anymore.

This is a true story with Tom as he nearly drank himself to death until one day in 2015/16, he tried to get out of bed & basically proceeded to have a severe mental breakdown, to the point that he had to move back to his parents house in Canada & it took a year before he was better. Tom is 100% completely sober now & prays every night before bed.

Had a friend who went from weed to crack. He had two loves, God and the drug. He spoke of God often. He was my best friend from my past lifestyle. It was not the drug that took him away. He got the drug any way he could. He passed from Cancer probably because his health was not a concern. He was 59. Day after day, year after year, he only wanted a fix. Food and other necessities were not relevant. So I know the struggle is real!

The part that stuck in my head the most was when Tom talked about going to Church then needing to turn to whiskey because he needed to take the knives out of his back. It struck me particularly hard because I grew up in a Church that was so strict it scared people away. I also heard so many people say they believed they needed to clean up their lives before they could go to Church. (The shame kept them from feeling like they would be accepted.) I've heard the Church compared to a gym. The fat guy at the gym should not be ashamed! He is trying to improve his life! Why do so many people judge people when they visit a Church!?!? The PEOPLE of the Church should be the most welcoming and loving people out there! They need to realize "I have heard the good news! Everyone should hear it too!" I believe the message of this song is that Tom knows God is good despite how "Christians" have treated him. His compass keeps pointing that direction no matter which distractions he follows. There is a newer song out. It doesn't have a video but it has the lyrics. The song is We All Got Some Things and he covers relapsing after getting clean and features Adam Calhoun. It will help you get a more rounded picture of Tom. I firmly believe he is fulfilling his mission in Life and everything he has gone through was to teach him the skills he would need to succeed.

Toms story: Tom McDonald is 100% independent! He’s had major record labels after him daily for at least four years and he turns them ALL down! I would love for you to check out If I change you are going to like it i think. This was when he wanted to change from what he is doing to what his is now. This is such a great song. I think Tom was raised Catholic but the family wasn't really practicing if you know what He mean. He doesn't claim a particular religion. He has a story that while he was on tour in Rome they were out in front of the Vatican. He saw a homeless man shoes and clothes falling apart. He had not eaten in days. Tom questioned how a multibillion dollar organization that had all this wealth could not help this one msn that was basically on their door step. So if he questions organized religion thats one reason. Another reason is organized religion has been the cause of wars and division among people for thousands of years and not just Christianity. Dont take it that he doesn't believe in a higher power. In one of his songs he says he walks with Christians. I believe that Tom had a devine intervention when he wrote Dear Rappers and blew up.
