The first video detailing my Finkl Steel mill scratchbuild project for Chicago Crossing. Here, we'll look at some approaches for painting and detailing some 3D-printed scrap ladles and their scratchbuilt trollies. These can be used for any steel mill project at any scale.

@@ChicagoCrossingRR yeah love that section of the layout it is 24" deep and about 3' wide. I have the blast furnace, rolling mill, and the coke works by Walthers scratch built the open hearth and the blower house. One guy can spend a session just operating the mill .

Hi Eric, Exceptional representational modeling of those trolleys . Your tutorial on painting techniques and interpretation of colors from prototype pictures really provided very useful approaches for any distressed metal modeling. Thanks as always for a great video. Happy Thanksgiving! Scott

I'm amazed at your eye for color. You have some of the best detailing I've seen. An example is when you painted the grasses, weeds, etc. at the bakery with so many colors to replicate the real world. Most people install the greenery and walk away feeling it's complete. For you that's only the first step! Bravo Eric.

Thanks Chris. I'm reminded of a video from an armor modeler (Night Shift) where he put down a beautiful diorama of vegetation for an American tank and then said, "now we start painting the model." He promptly painted the entire thing umber and then picked out each of the plants with an airbrush. I was floored, it really informed a lot of what I try and do now.

Nice. Very convincing. I really like the water technique you used. I'll have to try that on some of my models.

Thanks Steve. I learned the approach watching Boomer Dioramas - it's pretty incredible how well this works for weathering and detailing most objects in a model scene. Paints are key, it'll work well with vallejo or similar high grade water-based stuff.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I am building some scrap metal bucket trollies for my 009 steel mill layout. These are based on the wagons used at Standard Steel in PA (I am from the UK BTW). Anyway, a question. On the prototype, are these ladles secured to the trolley or is it just the weight of the bucket holding it in place? I couldn't see anything on the photos.
@ChicagoCrossingRR
@ChicagoCrossingRR 6 ай бұрын
For the Finkl prototypes, it appears they are seated on a circular platform with their mass securing them to the trolley and little else. That railway is likely to only be moving at a few MPH so unlikely they would fall off. Likewise not obvious to me whether the clamshell doors at the bottom of the prototype ladles are flat or round. Contemporary ladle trolleys that I've seen have four steel 'fingers' that help to center the ladle in place on the trolley.

@@ChicagoCrossingRR thanks for that, appreciate it. I have seen other examples that also look like they are not secured. Trust me, fitting scale sized chains would be a pain so I am glad 😭

@@vikingofengland fitting small chains to secure ladles sounds like just the sort of thing I'd take on...😅. Not saying it's a good idea.
