Awesome video. I like how passionate you are at explaining things. That disc rot results that you played on the CD Video disc is heartbreaking. The content is fading away. Reminds me of those disposable DivX DVDs. The CD Video discs that played fine look great, better than I expected. Would you say it looks as good or better than a VCD? I never had a player capable of playing CD Video discs, but was thinking of getting one.

Ah, thanks very much! There are a lot of different kinds of CD changer mechs out there, and I've always thought that it was a shame that the changer didn't get some sort of clear window for a display because they look pretty cool when changing discs. What changers did you manage to find?

It's no wonder, really, that CD Audio/CD-V units are so rare these days. Back when CD-Video was in vogue, regular CD players were fairly expensive on their own. For the money you'd have to spend to get something like that Yamaha CD-V player, you could have just bought a LaserDisc combi-player and had the ability to play laser videodiscs as well as CDs and CD-Vs. The expense versus value didn't make much sense. As for the video quality issues on the Yamaha compared to the Pioneer, it should be noted that there is no error correction involved in that case. The signal extracted off of the disc when playing the video portion is analogue; there is digital stereo sound, but the bitstream is contained within analog subcarriers. As the signal is analogue, there is no mathematical mechanism for correcting errors, such as CIRC on CD Digital Audio. The most that you've got for "error correction" for the video part is dropout compensation, which is working overtime on parts of the disc that are rotted. Without dropout compensation, the blue and red speckles throughout the video would look more like massive single line dropouts throughout the same. Of course, dropout compensation is only for the video and does nothing for the digital sound, as we hear on 19:41. The herringbone-type noise we see at 20:27 on the video is crosstalk distortion, and that is usually because the calibration of the optics and/or optical servo circuits on the player is not optimal. The Yamaha might be in need of service, but having it done must involve the use of a calibration reference disc as well as the service manual to tell you which test points to hook up to and how patterns on an oscilloscope are supposed to look like ... so good luck finding anybody who can fix it, then.

Thanks, I appreciate it! Life sometimes makes it a bit difficult to get videos up consistently, but I'm working on restructuring my shooting / editing areas to make videos a Little faster.

Thanks! I love finding obscure bits of tech like this, and finding essentially a music video singles player was awesome. I had to hunt down that Rush disc, I'm a huge fan of their work and couldn't pass it up when I found out it existed!

@@OfficialSoundtracker I just ordered Exit Stage Left on LD, cant wait to watch it also heads up there are some pressings of A Show Of Hands with Lock and Key on it if you didn't know.

Exit Stage Left is a great concert, I love the bits in between the concert where the band members have a chance to talk about music, it's really eye opening. I tend to think of it as their greatest hits live up till that point in time. It's funny you should mention, my copy of A Show of Hands LD does in fact have Lock And Key, was the track replaced on a different press? It sounds like I have another variant to find 😀

@@OfficialSoundtracker the other version is the one without Lock and Key the same as the VHS and DVD. Your lucky because that version is hard to find. There also are some other LDs I'm looking for including Woodstock 94 (one of my favs to watch) and Cunning Stunts (I'm also a huge Metallica fan)

I never heard of this format. Very cool! You lost me on the part about comparing CD audio quality, though. Whatever you're trying to demonstrate there, it didn't come through for me on KZfaq. You mentioned that it has no digital output. Now I'm curious, have you ever tried using a CD player as a transport with an external DAC?
@OfficialSoundtracker

Thanks, I appreciate it! Ah, I was worried about that when I was cutting the video together. The effects of player vs player diminished a bit when going from my hifi system to my pc speakers, and subsequently to my phone, but the track that I think best represents the difference across mediums is the Genesis one. On my end what I hear is the instruments end up being a bit more spaced out in the sound stage, which leads to the audio sounding clearer from each individual instrument. The mix doesn't sound as cluttered from the same CD through the Yamaha, and in the case of Genesis, the whooshing noise from the synthesizer becomes a bit more prominent, and the rest of the instruments have a better sonic attack/decay/sustain/release as a result. The drum hits are also a little sharper in that track as played by the Yamaha. As for using a CD player with an external DAC, I'm planning on doing that as soon as I pick up one more. I have several things that count as an external dac, but two of them are from the 90s (receiver and preamp with digital inputs) and I'm curious what two modern dacs vs two 90s dacs would compare as. I've been doing a lot of reading about blind testing as well, and I've got a few ideas that I'd like to discuss in an upcoming video, as soon as I get my hands on the last Dac I'm looking for. How about you?

@@OfficialSoundtracker My receiver doesn't have any digital input, but I got a Modi 3 DAC, then I got a switch box so I could run all my digital sources into that. It makes everything consistent. Presently I have a new Onkyo CD changer with digital output to the Modi 3. To me it sounds great, but I've got to admit my previous CD player was an older Yamaha unit that I also thought sounded great.
