I first used a laser disk player back in 1987 while I was stationed in Osaks, Japan. It was a Yamaha CLV 1. The very first disk was Airport featuring the fictious Lincoln International with Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin. The spin-up was like a space+ ship taking off. Later I built up a whole library of movies including Indiana Johnes and the temple of doom, Close encounters of the third kind, Sindbads seventh voyages as well as many music videos. After my return the player burned out. Now I got a Pioneer CLD S315. This also plays PAL disks. Japan uses NTSC. Important: use a professional converter when digitizing laser disks. Cheap composite to HDMI converters spoil the video. The Laser vision produces the sharpest picture of the standard resolution TV, more than twice as clear as VHS.

A very nice review, thank you. I had one after getting a Magnavox 8000 in December '78. This was in the Atlanta test market and the machines worked well. (Essentially these first machines were handmade and after a year, they offered me a new one to take the old one back and see what the wear was like) The discs back then were probably 75% defective with the CAV DiscoVision discs so there was a frustration with it. New discs became nearly non-existent until Pioneer hit the market with that machine and I sold the magnavox for the Pioneer one, which I thought played better.

Having this exact issue. Just had to replace the radiator and rear bake drums and wheel cylinders with hardware. 3 somewhat big jobs in a month. Hopefully it’s just the fuses. Thanks for the video.

I had one of these that a local shop I worked for gave me back in 1985. Worked great. Wish I would have kept it. We also sold Magnavox and I remember the Magnavox demo disc with Leonard Nimoy and the talking rock. VCA-001 is listed as a high voltage block. This was the power supply for the helium-neon laser. My memory is a bit foggy on this, but I think we maybe service one with this fault.

It's not an hu block. It's an hv block. Hv meaning high voltage. High voltage was needed for the helium nein laser.

I bought one when they first came out in December 1980. It asking sub the software had failure issues. Pioneer came out with an update. It was the vp 1000a. Pioneer swapped the unit for me for free. It worked for years until the power supply for the helium neon failed.

Depending on the adapter, I notice the same issues with Bluetooth, although I find the built in Bluetooth on my Onkyo receiver, it sounds a lot better than the Bluetooth adapters I’ve used

From somebody who's been messing with 8-tracks all his life (40+ years), my advice would be to stick to the major name brands: Pioneer, Motorola, Panasonic, JVC, Akai, Wollensak. From my experience; Sanyo and all the "big box" store brands from the likes of K-Mart, Kresges, Wollworths, Montgomery-Wards, Sears, etc are all garbage. They were cheap, borderline devices when new and 50 years down the line are nothing but hot garbage. With tapes, try to stick to first-run cartridges. Columbia House, Record Club of America and tertiary-party dupes will probably sound like trash.

GREAT vid.! I recently inherited a 1979 Thunderbird convertible (one of only 100 produced) that has a factory "AM/FM/8 TRACK" radio. Unfortunately the 8 track part of it doesn't work, but fortunately I just found a guy (in his '80s) who going to fix it! I can't wait to start playing those tapes! A neighbor down the street - who has an old Triumph with an factory AM/FM/8 Track - shares your enthusiasm and passion for 8 track technology as you! Thanks, man!

Very cool video man ! Thus far I've just been using the overbias spec for tape types. The pro's use multiple freq's for a common level but I'm not sure if they go beyond the drop out point or before ?

Just found your video. Loved your explanation. I worked in radio for 40 years and used a variety of reel to reel decks. If you bias the machine correctly, 3.75ips can sound very decent. I've worked for FM radio stations that played music from 10.5-inch reels at 3.75ips. By the way, I have an Otari MX-5050 (pro deck) that came out of a radio station, and I'd never want to part with! Be well!

Makes me wonder, if the 909/919 player ins black were US/NTSC only. I'm searching for a black model sind "ever" and never saw one with a 220V PSU/PAL/Scart. May be it's easier to import just a player from the staates or stick to my champagne 909 🙂 Great video!

Perhaps this off topic, but do you have a recommendation for a repair service for a Pioneer RT 707? I own one and it plays great but it won’t record. I agree with the other posts, this was extremely informative. Thanks!

5:21 The original logo for the system was interesting, I think better than what they settled on. I think also HU block was actually HV Block as voltage could be an issue.

With the help of your video I was able to repair my X-1800SD. The detailed description as you were disassembling and cleaning gave me the confidence to tackle changing the belts, cleaning the capstan for the 8track player, replacing one of the cams and most importantly, replacing the capacitor motor. Thank you so much for posting this!

I think I saw a unit like this in 2006 at a local supermarket, it 3was branded Nu-Tec I think, and it was very cheap, maybe $30 or something. I think Tandy also sold something like this in around 1998. I have actually seen Samsung portable radio/TV that I think could charge rechargeable batteries.

Awesome video. I like how passionate you are at explaining things. That disc rot results that you played on the CD Video disc is heartbreaking. The content is fading away. Reminds me of those disposable DivX DVDs. The CD Video discs that played fine look great, better than I expected. Would you say it looks as good or better than a VCD? I never had a player capable of playing CD Video discs, but was thinking of getting one.

I was given the Crosley as a gift a year ago and I couldn't figure out how to switch from 33 to 45. Thanks for identifying the tiny fine print for me. Now I'm listening to my original 45 of "A Hard Day's Night" from 60 years ago. Sounds good!

Sadly my jubilation was short-lived. I used the supplied 45 middle but the record stopped just shy of the end. Very disconcerting. This happened with another record as well. Any way to adjust this?

The L port adjusts the 33 speed, the H port adjusts the 45 speed and the 78 is adjusted by another port. I have a Yearstay record player (isn’t a super random brand) and the 78 port is on one of the green mother-board-looking sections.
