Ced Gee stops by #UniqueAccessEnt to discuss why he feels he shouldn't have produced Tim Dog's LP. The Ultramagnetic MC's rapper also tells #SorenBaker about how Salt-N-Pepa's success cost his group. Let us know what you think.

Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

I remember back around '92 Tim Dog was being interviewed on Westwood's show and had to set a caller straight who thought the east/west beefs were real. Tim was saying how him and Dre were talking about doing a dissing tour! If only we could've seen the damage these silly industry games would do.

I get why, but pity Ced Gee has mixed feelings about Tim Dog's album, because it's a great album, and a personal favourite. To me, as an impressionable teen, it never came across as a negative record, just brazen bravado over some stupendous beats. Tim Dog was always riding that narrow line between real and larger-than-life charicature, that's what made him so entertaining. As a fan I'm kind of glad Ced didn't think that way then, because we would've missed out on a classic.
@pentagramparsons
@pentagramparsons 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. And the beats were out of this world great! Kool Keith himself were even amazed by what they cooked up for that album, just fantastic stuff. And as far as the lyrics on Fuck Compton for example, they felt like a breath of fresh air on release. "Fighting over colors? All that gang shit is for dumb motherfuckers!" Hahaha - still dope imo

Ced Gee, understandably, if you ask me, regretted producing the _song_ that precedented the NY-LA rap war. Yet the song-namely, Tim Dog's "Fuck Compton" single-was superficial. New Yorkers never took the song, let alone its rapper, seriously. Death Row Records' success, turning rap music into Top 10 popular music, soon incited New York rap fans' territorial aggression against Los Angeles rap. Industry sources would stage a NY-LA rap war, gratifying cultural forces that craved a NY-LA rap war, without Tim Dog.

Sorry for the double comment BUT Hurby luv Bug must be the most feared man in hip hop. Considering what he contributed to the timeline no one has done a comprehensive you tube piece or doc on hurby luv bug Azor or next plateau records. Soren, what's up. Kwame talked about him a lil bit. But cmon man. Salt n Pepa. Kid n Play. Dana Dane.. then u gotta note the producers that branched off of that sound..he deserves it. The culture deserves it to connect the timeline.

Hip Hop went from mostly conscious lyrical based party music and changed into nword, bword, drug dealing, street gangs, guns, death, murder, penitentiary, stripper, pimp, hoe, African-American genocide music in the early 1990s sponsored by mostly non African-American record label executives. I recall Too Short saying he wanted to put out a conscious album in the mid 1990s to balance all of the other type of music he did but the record label return that project and said that they wanted the pimp, player, mack, bword music from Too Short or his project would sit on the shelf. East Coast vs West Coast beef was originated & generated for profits at the expense of mostly African-Americans that cost some people their lives...Prophets or profits?

@@ralphwashington3546 He did say that. But Ced Gee did not produce any tracks for Tuff Crew. I think he he meant the Krown Rulers on their joint debut EP/LP with Tuff Crew, where they had the aforementioned guest tracks. The first solo Tuff Crew album was Danger Zone in 1988. Apparently I've been told via LA Kidd from Tuff Crew he was taught how to use the SP12 by Ced Gee but Tuff Crew joints were produced in Philly by Dave (aka LA Kidd). Just check the credits on their albums. Ced Gee and Kool Keith are only credited on Phanjam (1987) www.discogs.com/artist/44983-Tuff-Crew Incidentally their are no Ced Gee credits for Larry Larr releases either, Chuck Nice from Three Times Dope is credited as producer. I really don't buy this conspiracy that Ced Gee is alluding to regarding the East Coast - West Coast beef being orchestrated as a way to 'divide and conquer' or undermine the rap world/ African Americans in general. He says Suge Knight made Tupac diss the East Coast - 1. Suge Knight is black anyway, and 2. Tupac was already dissing Big and Puff and had a vendetta against them - before Suge Knight signed him to Death Row. Tupac had a vendetta against anyone that pissed him off in any way - look at the way he treated the Hughes Brothers, Sam Sneed etc. If there was an ulterior driving force behind the beef - it was simply money. Record companies want to make money, that's why it's called the music business. We love music, but it makes people money, and money makes the world go around.
