Cedar shake shingles have a really unique look, and this week I experiment with shake shingle patterns to make the garden shed really stand out. The job was done with mostly hand tools, and it was incredibly fun and relaxing process.
Plans for the shed will be available soon. I ran into some issues, but I'm working on them and hope to have them available this weekend. If you'd like to join the mailing list, I will be announcing them there as soon as they're released. www.almfab.com/mailing-list

You don't need that much slope on the gutter. Maybe 1/4 inch over that span is lots. It would look nicer if it wasn't hanging down past the facia board. Nice shingle work I have some cedar in my garage that I didn't know what to do with. Maybe I will turn it into shingles and try something like this on my shed.

Exterior trim screws are your friend for the shingles that require exposed fastening. It helps to avoid discoloration from weather exposure to the nails and the screws also come in colors that will blend in to either stained or weathered shingles.

As someone who has watched a lot of This Old House, I can say that cedar shingles are indeed a labor of love. 😂 The Victorians did so many amazing shingle patterns, you could go nuts playing with designs. This shed is so beautiful, I hope your neighbors appreciate it!

Beautiful job! Shingle shed corners very nice w/ custom cuts. Better looking than putting a wood vertical L-corner end cap that the shingles butt into. Surprised you didn’t buy a craftsman style wood door. An acetylated wood door wouldn’t rot, but cd be pricey - unless you build it yourself. Thanks for sharing the process.

A helpful and time saving tip I was given my first cedar roof was using a ledger board for the longer runs and the rigid palm nailer makes nailing so much faster. Looks great and your shakes are nice and level Cedar always makes the building look better

I'll be honest I ended up on your channel because I watch Wyrmlife and saw the episode the other day where they came out to talk to you about some collaboration. I watch a ton if woodwork channels and love out of the box projects. So, the plywood patterns thy showed in clips where very impressive and interesting. So, here I am looking around. And this shed build was solid, but became very interesting when you hit this part and I saw the shingle design on on the back. I would have never thought of dropping a pattern in the middle of a layout. But that is so freaking cool! Very nice project. I've been wanting a new shed but they all look the same......square and boring. But this is nice and the trash covered mini car port..lol. I love the idea and look.

There is such a thing as a manual nail pusher. I have the ‘Great Neck Brad and Nail Driver’ I found and it works great. It’s a tube with a handle and it’s partially spring loaded. Just drop the nail in and push hard to slide the nail in. Bit awkward on the ladder and under the eve but doable. Your nail heads are pretty big too. Maybe too small to work.

When you're nailing close to the edge flip the nail over on a hard surface and hit the pointed end with a hammer. It'll be less likely to split the shingle because it'll be smashing its way through, rather than splitting its way through.
@beckermen
@beckermen 2 жыл бұрын
there's also a punch like the air nailer that you strike with a hammer. I use mine to back nails out. It does a good job of keeping them straight. Great build, great series, loving the channel. I wish I'd had this example when I built my shed last year. I'm from Seattle and live in the midwest now. The background and b roll makes me homesick.

This series was so much fun. Watching your craftsmanship apply to construction and the art form that resulted was inspiring. It feels like these days construction still has craftsmanship but applied in efficiency and standardization rather than the artesian construction techniques of the past. Both are beautiful in their own way but love to see this all come together with your style all over it!
