thanks for sharing. do cedar shingles require a protective coating or can they be left as raw untreated wood?

Hi, thanks for the comment. Western Red Cedar shingles are naturally durable and do not require any additional coatings or preservative treatments applied to ensure they perform in a roofing or cladding application. The only time additional coatings are required is should you wish to avoid the silver / grey weathering and preserve the natural red colour. Hope this helps!

Will moisture remain between two shingle pieces? That may cause it to rot quicker than expected

Not a bad guide - Thank you. I take it the shingles are nailed right onto the roof sheathing; no air space? I also saw the double starter course. Was your spacing 5 1/4"?

Cedar roofs are nothing but 30lb felt roofs , There all right if you in the woods and its 1890.
