listening to lily's songs at 1am hits different. ceiling fan really has to be in my top 3 fav lily's released song, the lyrics, the intro, really put what i'm feeling into words in 2023.

There are so many layers of meaning behind the lyrics and the music video. I really like this song! I put my thoughts on some of the lyrics below. "a never ending car ride" a metaphor for the relentless thoughts that plague her "i / couldn't stop, couldn't stop / crying" she is unable to do anything except cry. she can't stop the thoughts, nor can she stop crying. "moonlit walls crumble to pieces" the cage that she uses to try to contain herself, her emotions and thoughts, is broken, and (see next quote) "fragments lost / they prove my existence" she knows that these fragments (emotions, thoughts experiences) are what makes her human. perhaps the "fragments lost" implies that she shows her self to other people, and in that way, gives those pieces of herself to others. "time and space crawl to a slow" shows how long these moments feel. she wants it to stop, but it feels like the opposite happens - as though time slows down. "sit in silence" she can't do anything but think, but that just worsens the feeling of spiraling. perhaps she has no energy to do anything else anymore. "i sink when i'm alone" she can't fight it, can't do anything but let it happen. "so i look up at the ceiling fan / everything feels lighter staring at the ceiling fan" the plain walls with the ceiling fan is safe, predictable, and monotone. much better to stick to something comforting, even if it is monotonous, than losing herself in her thoughts. the monotone colors interspaced with bright, galaxy-like colors throughout the music video are likely a representation of the boring, safe life versus the world of experiences outside the room with the ceiling fan. some of the experiences outside would be fun and exciting, and others would be hurtful and depressing. but even a little bit of hurt is enough to make her want to stay inside, where it is safe, where she won't get hurt. "moonlit walls crumble to pieces" but she has to leave sometimes, perhaps unwillingly (because the walls crumble on their own, she doesn't intentionally leave), and it hurts. there's way more that i could analyze, but i think i'll leave it here for now.
