On this special edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to one of my all time favorite songs...it's Voyager from Big Big Train. I'm deciding to share a song that I know and love well today because it's my birthday, and I wanted to turn things around a bit with one that I know and y'all might not! Big Big Train is a musician's band with songs full of melody and color that tell stories and tap into the human condition. I hope you enjoy!

Happy birthday! It's a pity David Longdon left us so soon. What a talented musician. If I am not wrong, this song was re-recorded last year using Longdon's voice, recorded before his death. Great piece of music. Check Big Big Train's new release, it's another gem.

Thank you for doing this song! I’d never heard of this before and I’m kinda blown away. It’s brilliant, and now I have a new band to explore. It kind of reminds me of Steven Wilson. Not sure if you’ve ever done anything from him before, but I’m 100% sure you’d love his music. Now to dive into more Big Big Train. ♥️

Big Big Train's music is certainly one of the most subtle ever in the world of rock. Greg Spawton is a true master of songwriting. Happy Birthday, Doug !

You really ought to check out their guitarist Rikard Sjöblom's old band, Beardfish some time if you already haven't. "And The Stone Said, If I Could Speak..." is a prog masterpiece!

This is also one of my favorites songs from BBT, but nothing matches the combo Voyager + Homesong (the final track on the original album). That final brass section gets me every time...

Finding this band the last year or so has been one of the most rewarding musical discoveries I’ve ever had in my 47 years (same age as you :) Voyager is one of their best first sure . Thanks so much for this Doug.

I like BBT’s use of a brass band in places. It’s a very English tradition especially in the working class North of the country . Evokes nostalgia particularly well . Check out Roy Harper’s “ when an old Cricketer leaves the crease” for a similar vibe.(Cricket however as a game usually needs a bit of explaining to Americans! ) Great track to pick- happy birthday Doug.

The late David Longdon actually auditioned for Genesis when Phil Collins left! Longdon’s version of Steve Hackett’s Spectral Mornings is spectacular. Another band you should check out is Karmakanic ….. The bass player is presently playing for …. Steve Hackett 😊

Longtime fan of your channel so I wish you a belated Happy Birthday Doug and thank you for introducing me to this incredible piece. My new current favorite. Perhaps you could check out some of the more mellower tracks by Periphery? Spencer is a ridiculously good vocalist and I think you'd enjoy the arrangements too. Yes he got down to the last two to be Genesis vocalist a spot taken by someone at that time more experienced with live audiences. Also NDV played with Genesis for awhile! BBT also recorded at Real World Studios so got to hang out with Peter Gabriel

Hope all your wishes came true.🥳 As I'm still enjoying the afterglow of my own bday (mine was March 4th, and absolutely fabulous), and seeing that you had a bday, it reminded me to mention another incredibly talented bday boi that I haven't seen you react to in quite a while..our very own SICK BOI, Ren, who celebrated his birthday on March 29th. He is back at it, dropping new music most every Thursday, and as promised his newer work is less focused on rap, instead showing off his vocals with his usual genre-defying style. As bday siblings, it'd be cool to see ya check out "Back on 74/Message in a Bottle" retake and his Fred Again Mashup..the confidence and polish in his voice puts him into a category all his own 😊

I believe that the premise of this piece is that Voyager is not simply sailing away from Earth in a straight line indefinitely, it is on an elliptical orbit, a bit like a comet, and one day in the future it may well sail back to earth. We just don't know when.

Glad you recognize this great band. Voyager was the last song they did that blew me away. Dave Gregory leaving the band ended that era of greatness. Voyager sounds like what Genesis-And then There Were Three would have sounded like if Steve Hackett never left and if they were still as good as previous albums. Voyager has the 1978 sound but has the 1976 style of Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. I love the changes and arrangements throughout the song. Definitely a favorite epic from the band along with Kingmaker.
