Over the weekend we harvested our first crop of green beans. We got enough for Granny to can and for us to can and eat! It was a massive harvest for the first picking. Matt was right about us needing to grow more rattlesnake beans 😃

Rattlesnake beans are very popular here in Mississippi. I buy them often at the local farmers market on Saturday morning. My parents always had a big garden. I can remember shelling peas on the side porch . The neighbors would come help. We shelled well into the night until they were all shelled. Those are precious memories at 70 years young. :)

Matt shows his love by teasing (a learned tactic possibly through his own growing up) but honestly awkward ~ “weird” is not much of a compliment.. and no matter the age, they have the opportunity to grow in how they communicate their love and appreciation so as not to diminish one another. Tipper thanks for your tolerance for all forms of love.

We started working the garden at 2-3 years old. They taught me early how to know when it was time to pick something. Garden work didn't really bother me, but picking cotton was a different story altogether. Made my hands tough, but wore my back out early. Them sacks was heavy. And weren't enough bandaids to go around. But nothing tastes as good as what's grown in your own soil. At three years old I was given my own patch of ground to grow what I wanted, it was full of maters, some green beans, but loads of maters. There was a certain satisfaction knowing that when we set down for supper I knowed that I growed them green beans. But I eat them maters soon as they was red enough.

Some times I think we have to relearn what our ancestors already knew. I grew up in Missouri...a long line of farmers. They knew to make what we called...Haymaker's Tea (or punch) to keep people hydrated the right way to enable them to work the fields or putting up hay in the heat. It is also called Switchel.

If somebody would have told me 5 years ago that I would enjoy sitting and watching someone on KZfaq eating Popsicles with pauses in conversation, I would have told them they were crazy. I love you guys, your channel, your way of life (similar to mine), your conversations, your garden/plant knowledge, Appalachian traditions, and love of family. I've only been watching KZfaq a couple years now even though I'm roughly your age. I look forward to all your videos. I'm way behind on the Watermelon Hill series, with only so many hours in a day, I skip them to keep up to date on the garden happenings. But again, I love the popsicle conversations, when those are over for the season I will again enjoy the fireside hot coco chats. Blessings to you all.

Still HOT here in Florida. Some rain too. Really have to watch ourselves and our animals that we stay hydrated. My husband works outside daily and his employer buys electrolyte popsicles for the guys. Plus cold water. Our beaches are packed with tourists..lots of drownings due to rip currents. So sad! Since we had cat 5 hurricane Michael in 2018 the gulf has been so dangerous. No way am I swimming out there.. beautiful but deadly. Every week I get more homesick for NC.. thinking September we will visit our home again. One thing we have is great neighbors there, so we don’t worry about the place. Can’t wait to pick our fox grapes. This afternoon I am making pickled carrots..lol. I recently discovered that I LOVE them.. I am on a clean food/paleo diet thru my doctor to lose weight and for health reasons..after the pancreas cancer scare this spring I want to be as healthy as possible. Still dealing with issues related to the liver and ducts but my chronic pain has all but disappeared! Awaiting bloodwork results to see how levels have changed. But I know for a fact food was the cause of 75% of my problems. So no more processed crap. Love watching the garden to table videos and recipes. I went from 6+ sodas a day and no water intake to no sodas and just water. That’s huge to me. Can’t wait for more videos to drop. Love hearing news of granny. Hope y’all have a wonderful week.. April

Just like everyone else has said, I am so happy Granny is so happy with the beans and cucumbers!! I have to say, I am the exact opposite about shoes; I am about to turn 50 and I would be barefoot 100% of the time if I could, lol! My feet are so calloused from years of barefoot walking, but my hubby of 30 years, (26 years as a Marine) has the feet of a newborn baby! Yours and Matt’s landscape and gardens are so beautiful…. And wow, those beans look super. Jar flys are singing here in West Virginia as well. The Katie dids started this week and are signing loud tonight. Old Timer saying is 6 weeks to first frost when the 1st katydids start singing. My grandparents were always working on the farm with the premise that “winter is coming”, get busy and stay after it. They were 100% correct. Buttermilk poured over crumbled cornbread with some sugar added is a treat. Thanks for sharing your garden. Good bless.

I'm still jealous of your bean stand!!! Believe it or not.. I finally have blooms on my okry and a few small small pods that have started. I can't tell you the joy that brings me. Okry just doesn't happen on this side of the mountains in the Pacific Northwest so my prayers and fist shaking have done some good I guess. Got so many squash and onions yesterday that I was forced to do something with all of them today and I usually don't put forth any effort on a Sunday other than church and meals. You garden and yard is so beautiful no matter how overgrown you might think that it is... it looks incredible. Hugs to you both.

Matt the bees and bugs do me the same way. I'm very happy for your harvest. We have had to plant our beans twice. Something has been eating them. We finally started spraying with repel away. That works really good for deer and groundhogs that we have trouble with. It stinks and the animals don't like it. We have been watching a 12-point buck and 2 does in our back hillside. They come all the time. I think one of the doe is pregnant. First time I have seen them come in the day and at night. I put up sweet banana peppers and Hungarian wax peppers today. We need to check our beans to see how far they are.

I agree with Matt about that Atlanta traffic. I have family in south Georgia. It used to be only certain times of the day, but now it's all day every day. Country laid back listening to the wind and the water is my kind of life too. Enjoy! Still praying for you and your family. Please pray for mine. We don't do as well loving each other as we ought. Worried about the second hay crop right now in Va. It is very dry right now, but whatever. It is always hot this time of year. I'll buy hay stretcher pellets for my mules if I have too. A teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a large glass of water every hour will rehydrate you too. 😊

I agree with Matt..I like colder weather..so hot here in the Piedmont NC, storms daily...garden is giving out to us daily , except melons are starting to rot at stem. ..

I’ve been canning some beans this week, too. I learned to use my pressure canner (finally)! I’ve had white half runner and pink tip beans.

I grow them exactly the same. Much easier than the way the old timers like my Dad did it. A tripod made of sticks for each hill of beans. I use a stepladder because my netting is 8 feet. They actually go to the top of that and start winding around each other. Really prolific.
