As and artist I am sure you have a better insight into the importance or color tha most of us but that Jack Leynnwood Revell 1/32 Bf-106G that you showed was very impactful on me. It told a story of launching into a dangerous night sky. I could feel the cold even though I was in Florida.

Thanks Max, and many of those now-iconic covers did that very thing to all of us back in the day. I've mentioned the vivid emotions of seeing Leynnwood's Revell F-27 boxart with PAX boarding in a balmy Palm Springs. I was standing in a howling blizzard in Manhattan at the time!

Great video Mr. Machat. I remember a lot of those kits from my youth. A pleasure to be able to see them again. yes the box art sold the model and the colour schemes made the aircraft really stand out. Even better if it was an action scene. A fighter in a dive with guns blazing looked a lot better than a fighter in level flight. The "battle" scene artwork made them look mean. The same for warships firing their guns and tanks firing their main guns and machine guns with explosions all around the tank. As a kid Plain box art and thosr photos of "completed and painted" models did not create any excitement in wanting the kit. Thank you once again for another fine trip down memory lane. And get well soon.

Good to see another video from you👍. Ahh yes, Rexall Drugs. Spent many hours of my childhood in Rexall. But mine only had a small model section. Three doors down was a traditional Toy Store where I bought most of my serious models. Rexall was primarily to buy candy and wax lips at Halloween.

As a kid in the 1960s, I'd accompany my Mom to the "Jitney Jungle" grocery store. They had an aisle bin with cheap model kits. I talked Mom into buying me a few old Hawk models there. Sadly that store closed in the next few years. But by then I found a closer department store that had kits. And my bicycle provided my mobility.

When Matchbox kits first appeared in the shops here in New Zealand I had studied the catalogue, and settled on the Spitfire - but I walked out the shop with a Westland Lysander, due entirely to the great box art of Lysanders in action attacking a German road convoy. I always enjoy hearing your insights on color. I worked in advertising and film for years, and the effect of color on the human mind led me to learn about psychology and perception. Much too much to share here, however, when I was working in children's TV, I studied the development of the human brain. In short, children age 5 - 10 have a brain chemistry similar to teens and young adults using recreational drugs. This explains their fascination with bright colors, distorted visual perspective, and need to associate personality and play value to shapes. This may explain the popularity of Rat Fink, Weird-O's, and other oddball designs into the Sixties. One way to measure this would be to compare sales figures associated with box art. Did modeling decline in the late Seventies and Eighties due to video games, or realistic depictions of the model kits on the box art versus the dramatic illustrations on early kits?
@celebratingaviationwithmik9782
@celebratingaviationwithmik9782 2 жыл бұрын
Great comment and observations, thanks Joel, and according to Jack Leynnwood himself, the decline in modeling was caused by us Baby Boomers growing-up. With the exceptions of those of us still building or collecting models today, building models was replaced by cars, sports, girls, joining the service, and the responsibilities of adulthood, among other factors. The change from artwork to photos sure didn't help.

Another Gloo Trooper here. I've enjoyed several of your videos over the past few months and have never been disappointed. Many of the kits here were before my time but I did buy many because of the box art and the Revell 1/32 Bf-109 you showed was one of them. I actually did build a kit while home from school with a cold. It was one of those first bagged Airfix kits found at a local drug store. I was impressed by the fact that they were all to the same 1/72nd scale. "Box art" wasn't up to Revell standards but still had its own appeal.

Red, yellow, blue, black and white can be mixed to obtain any color in the spectrum. Printing costs, number of colors, type (screen vs. lithograph) fineness of print, number of prints etc. also heavily influence color and design choices. Additional subtler colors and shading can also be used - look at the edge of the print or printed fabric for a row of colored test circles and registration mark to find the number of colors printed. I wonder how much of the retail price was printing and packaging costs. Once injection molds and box-top art are complete, the production and handling and perhaps even materials of a five, seven, or ten color print and box assembly might exceed those of the model itself. I really enjoyed this video, Thanks!

Hope you are feeling better. Another great video. Looking back at the covers from the 50’s and 60’s they remind me of the comic book art of the same period, particularly the cover art. It really didn’t matter how “accurate” or “realistic” it was to the story inside. It just had to be exiting. BTW I like “completely formed plastic” on the Revell kit. We’re there ever kits that were deliberately made of incompletely formed plastic? Just asking 😀

I started building model airplanes in 1967, and found that Monogram models were better than the Revell ones. I bought Monogram unless they didn’t make the plane I wanted. I thought Revell quality was nearly as good as Monogram, but Revell’s instructions weren’t nearly as good as Monogram. We avoided Aurora kits like the plague. They were a very distant third. I liked the box art, but I don’t know how much of a factor it was for me in choosing kits to buy and build.

So semi off topic question, I am looking for a good quality DB-7/A-20 model kit, but since they're all older I'm not sure what brands to look for or stay away form, what might you recommend? My recently deceased grandfather was a Douglas engineer working on that plane in the late 30s up until his time came to go fight in Europe. I was hoping to display a model he had but it's gone missing, instead I'm hoping to build up a model in his memory.

The great Douglas employees were a very special group, and there are a number of good quaility A-20 models available on eBay right now at very reasonable prices (not always the case): www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=revell+douglas+A-20+havoc+model+kit&_sacat=0

What about the Testors paints that cost ¢10 each that we bought every time we bought a new kit. I had a box full of the appropriate colors. Yellow, red's, blue's, green's , flat black, flat white. Olive drab.

Hi Mike : ) I have been noticing that some box art has egregious error in accuracy partitularly the Revell 48 scale B 17G.... Mr. Shepherd made a whopper of a miss- he didnt paint a 4 engined plane! The left wing is only showing o n e engine!! : (

Good catch, and in many cases, those visual tricks were done intentionally. Jack Leynnwood told me that he would paint things to catch our eye, and then we would buy the kit!

I can see the box art being very importaint because it works with ceral and everything else thats sold. But on the eastern or TWA plane I would have choose the TWA because it had more stuff.

The artists did a good job of selling kits by presenting an idealized vision (picture) of the aircraft. But how many kids came close to achieving those visions? A limited allowance for supplies (thanks, Dad), lost parts (the carpet monster must be fed), and ill willed siblings (thanks for nothing sis) all seemingly conspired to sabotage those dreams. Not to mention the bad instructions, fumbly fingers, and inexperience. There's always the next kit though!

Mike I have a question so I bought a lot of model kits in the '80s and '90s so what changed in that time. Because I noticed that the box art was not nearly as colorful (in fact now that I think about it most model kits didn't even have box art they just had a picture of the completed model)they didn't use a lot of primary colors and in fact the colors were background often times were white so was there a change and thinking or a change in advertising style?

Good question, and the answer involves the end of the "age of innocence" in the early 1970s. Box art at the beginning of plastic modeling in the 1950s was colorful and bombastic, but in many cases did not resemble the plastic pieces inside the box. By the 1970s, parents began suing model companies for false advertising, and winning their cases to boot! The answer was to use photos of the actual model on the box top, and even explain that professional modelers built those samples and the kid's build may not resemble the photo. Sad, but true. Thanks for watching!

Wow $5 in the 1950s that was a really expensive model kit according to my inflation calculator that would be a $62 model kit in today's money

I always enjoy displaying my model aircraft in a flight position rather than on the ground to me a plane belongs in the sky not on the ground and a lot of planes look so much better flying than they do sitting helplessly on the tarmac another nice thing about displaying models in a flight attitude is you don't have to deal with often horribly molded inaccurate not very strong model kit landing gear prone to Breaking or you never could get perfectly perpendicular to the plane because the plastic was warped or not molded properly or they just the model kit had a poor way of the landing gear assembly being glued or attached to the body of the fuselage often on model kits the landing gear is the weakest part of the kit and if you display your model in a flight mode you avoid all of that hassle

Also as your model building skills increase you can start to do some really super dramatic realistic in Flight attitudes for your model kit some of the best model planes that I've seen displayed at contest is where the model builder put the flight in a takeoff attitude where the landing gear are semi-retracting into the body the plane is in a full speed climb it's just very action-packed and dramatic also if you display your model in Flight you get to create a custom display base which I've become quite talented at doing and custom-made display base gives you real estate to then add a plaque or military badging or what I like to do with my military aircraft is out of starring build a multi-layer stencil cut Squadron badge or insignia for the particular Squad room that the plane operates from it really is cool it really draws the viewer into the model I've also noticed even though judges don't judge on your base they do judge on the overall presentation of the model that includes an interesting base and the more interesting base that you build for your model when you take it to a contest or show the more the general public are drawn to your model kit as opposed to someone just bringing a model and plopping it out down on the contest table
